A common booking at our desk reads like this: two passengers, a 3 p.m. landing at Terminal 3, two suitcases, drop-off at an inn on Picton Street, dinner at seven. No stop at the Falls, no hotel tower, no casino. The trip from Pearson Airport to Niagara-on-the-Lake is a different journey from the one most visitors make, and it is worth planning on its own terms.

Niagara-on-the-Lake (locals say "NOTL") is the small 19th-century town at the mouth of the Niagara River where it meets Lake Ontario, surrounded by vineyards and home to the Shaw Festival. It sits about 20 km north of Niagara Falls, and it has no train station. That last fact shapes everything below. At NiagaraFallsLimo.net we drive this route most days in the warmer months, and the notes here come from the inn doors themselves.

Can you go straight from Pearson Airport to Niagara-on-the-Lake?

Yes. NiagaraFallsLimo.net drives directly from Toronto Pearson to any Niagara-on-the-Lake inn, about 125 km (78 mi), usually 1 h 30 – 1 h 45 off-peak and two hours or more on a summer Friday. The route never enters Niagara Falls. Enter your flight and inn in the online booker to see the fixed fare.

There is no need to go to Niagara Falls first and double back. The route leaves the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW) in St. Catharines and approaches the town from the west, through orchards and vineyards, so the first view many couples get is of vines rather than mist.

Pearson Airport to Niagara-on-the-Lake: wine country first

From Pearson the drive follows Highway 427 to the QEW, crosses the Burlington Skyway and runs along the south shore of Lake Ontario through Grimsby, Beamsville and Vineland. In St. Catharines the car leaves the highway for regional roads into Niagara-on-the-Lake.

A few things worth knowing:

  • Distance: about 124–126 km (77–78 mi) to Old Town, depending on the inn.
  • Time: usually 1 h 30 – 1 h 45 off-peak. Friday afternoons from May to October and holiday weekends add time on the QEW through Oakville and Burlington.
  • Last stretch: the final kilometres are two-lane country roads. In the dark, or in a snowstorm in January, a local driver is worth having.
  • No tolls on the standard route: the QEW and Highway 427 are free.

If you are staying out on the Niagara River Parkway, at the Riverbend Inn for example, the car reaches you without entering Old Town at all. Our full Toronto to Niagara-on-the-Lake route page has the same drive from downtown.

Pearson to Niagara-on-the-Lake inns: drop-off notes

Old Town is compact and walkable, with narrow streets and limited parking. A few specifics from the drivers:

Prince of Wales Hotel, 6 Picton Street. The grande dame of the town, run by Vintage Hotels, in the heart of Old Town. The car stops at the main entrance and the bags go straight in. See our Prince of Wales Hotel page for return-trip and evening-pickup advice.

Queen's Landing, 155 Byron Street. Also a Vintage Hotels property, overlooking the river mouth and a short walk from the Shaw Festival Theatre. Useful if theatre is the reason for the trip.

Pillar and Post Hotel & Spa, 48 John Street West. A Vintage Hotels property with its own spa, on the edge of Old Town. Our Pillar and Post page covers the entrance.

Oban Inn, 160 Front Street. On the lakefront side of Old Town.

The Shaw Club and Harbour House. Both run by Niagara's Finest Hotels; the Shaw Club is on Queen Street, Harbour House by the water.

Riverbend Inn & Vineyard, 16104 Niagara River Parkway. A Georgian mansion on 17 acres with 21 rooms, outside Old Town on the Parkway, according to the Riverbend Inn's own site. Its restaurant is Oaklands at Riverbend.

Our Niagara-on-the-Lake inns guide covers more properties, including bed and breakfasts on residential streets where the chauffeur will pull up at the front door rather than a porte-cochère.

Timing your arrival around the Shaw Festival

Many couples fly in specifically for the Shaw Festival, Niagara-on-the-Lake's repertory theatre season. In 2026 the festival runs from April 2 to December 23, with the summer plays finished by October 11 and holiday productions running from early November: A Year with Frog and Toad at the newly rebuilt Court House Theatre and Rodgers + Hammerstein's Cinderella at the Festival Theatre.

If you are landing on a show day, work backwards:

  1. Curtain time at the theatre.
  2. Thirty to forty-five minutes at the inn to check in and change.
  3. The drive: 1 h 30 – 1 h 45, more on a Friday.
  4. Time from touchdown to the arrivals door: allow at least an hour for an international flight.

A 2 p.m. international landing for an 8 p.m. curtain is comfortable. A 5 p.m. landing for an 8 p.m. curtain is tight, and you should consider seeing the show the next evening. Our Shaw Festival page explains theatre drop-offs and post-show pickups.

Why there is no simple bus or train to NOTL

Visitors from Europe expect a rail link to a famous wine town. Niagara-on-the-Lake does not have one. The nearest passenger stations are in St. Catharines and Niagara Falls, both a drive away. Public options exist but involve changes: GO or VIA to Niagara Falls, then a local connection, or the WEGO system, whose Niagara-on-the-Lake shuttle connects with the Falls lines at the Floral Clock and is included in WEGO 24- and 48-hour passes.

Rideshare does operate in the area, but availability in a small town can be thin, especially for a pickup back to the airport. Our post on why Uber and Lyft rides can be scarce in Niagara-on-the-Lake explains what to expect. If you have not decided between the two towns, read Niagara-on-the-Lake vs Niagara Falls: where to stay.

Flying into Hamilton or Buffalo instead?

Pearson has the most international flights, but it is not the only way into wine country. John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport (YHM) is about 85 km (53 mi) from Old Town, usually 1 h 15 – 1 h 30, and it is served by Porter Airlines and WestJet; our post on Hamilton airport to Niagara-on-the-Lake inns covers that arrival.

Buffalo Niagara International Airport (BUF) in New York is closer still, roughly 58 km (36 mi) via the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge, which lands you in Queenston, a short drive up the Niagara Parkway from Old Town. That trip includes a border crossing, so every passenger needs their own valid documents, and no one can promise how long the bridge will take. Our guide to Buffalo airport to Niagara-on-the-Lake via the Lewiston bridge explains it. For most transatlantic couples, though, Pearson remains the simplest airport, because it has the widest choice of direct flights.

The honest verdict. A rideshare or taxi from Pearson can get you to Niagara-on-the-Lake, and if you are travelling light on a quiet weekday it is a reasonable choice. Renting a car makes sense only if you will not be tasting, because the point of wine country is the wineries. A pre-booked chauffeur is the natural fit for most couples: it lands you at the inn door on a fixed fare, and the same company can drive your wine tour later in the week so nobody has to drive after tastings.

Making the transfer the start of the trip

Some couples like to break the drive with a first winery. That is possible with a multi-stop booking: you visit the tasting room while the chauffeur waits. Two rules apply. There is no drinking in our vehicles: Niagara Region's vehicle-for-hire by-law forbids drivers to permit alcohol consumption in the car. And after a transatlantic flight, most people find one stop is plenty. If you buy bottles, they travel sealed in the trunk.

For a proper day among the vineyards, our one-day wine tour itinerary is a better plan than squeezing tastings into arrival day.

Booking it with NiagaraFallsLimo.net in 3 steps

  1. Pickup and drop-off. Choose Toronto Pearson with your terminal and flight number; set the drop-off as your inn's name or street address in Niagara-on-the-Lake. Add a winery as an extra stop if you want one.
  2. Vehicle. A Mercedes-Benz E or S-Class suits two people with two bags; a Standard Sedan takes up to three with two large bags; a Standard SUV takes up to six with six bags. Each shows its fixed fare.
  3. Details and payment. Add passengers, bags, meet & greet inside arrivals and any extras, then pay securely. Your confirmation arrives by email.

You can start any time on the booking page. The same booker handles your return to Pearson at the end of the stay.

Who it suits

Couples are the classic NOTL arrival, often for an anniversary, a theatre weekend or a wine trip; our couples page has ideas. Individuals attending a conference or wedding in town avoid a three-change rail journey. Families visiting relatives or staying in a larger suite get one vehicle with seats fitted. Groups, such as wedding parties flying in together, can share a Standard SUV or an Executive Sprinter if travelling with carry-on bags only.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Pearson Airport from Niagara-on-the-Lake?

About 125 km (78 mi) by Highway 427 and the QEW to Old Town. Off-peak the drive usually takes 1 h 30 to 1 h 45; allow two hours or more on a summer Friday afternoon or a holiday weekend.

Is there a train from Toronto to Niagara-on-the-Lake?

No. Niagara-on-the-Lake has no passenger rail station. The nearest stations are St. Catharines and Niagara Falls, and you need a further connection from either. Most visitors flying into Pearson go directly by car.

Can I take an Uber from Pearson to Niagara-on-the-Lake?

Rideshare pickups are permitted at Pearson, and some drivers will accept the long trip. Prices follow demand at the moment you request. Getting a rideshare back to the airport from a small town can be harder, so many visitors pre-book the return.

Does the drive go through Niagara Falls?

No. The usual route leaves the QEW in St. Catharines and reaches Niagara-on-the-Lake from the west through vineyard country. The Falls are about 20 km further south, an easy separate trip later in your stay.

Can we stop at a winery on the way from the airport?

Yes, as an extra stop on a multi-stop booking: you visit the tasting room while the chauffeur waits. Nobody drinks in our vehicles, as Niagara Region's by-law forbids it. Bottles you buy travel sealed in the trunk.

Which inns can you drop off at?

Any address in Niagara-on-the-Lake, including the Prince of Wales Hotel, Queen's Landing, Pillar and Post, the Oban Inn, the Shaw Club, Harbour House, the Riverbend Inn on the Parkway and private bed and breakfasts. Enter the inn's name or address in the booker.

What is the best way to get from Pearson to Niagara-on-the-Lake with luggage?

A pre-booked car is the simplest, because there is no rail link and the inns are small properties on narrow streets. The chauffeur loads the bags once at Pearson and unloads them at the inn door, on a fixed fare shown in the booker before you pay.
