For travellers from New York City, the Hudson Valley or Albany, Amtrak to Niagara Falls means one train: the Maple Leaf. It runs once a day each way between New York City and Toronto Union Station. It stops at Niagara Falls, New York, crosses the river, and stops again at Niagara Falls, Ontario. Amtrak lists the full journey at about 12 hours 30 minutes.
That length is the point for some people. It is a day of river and lake scenery instead of a flight and a highway. It does come with a border inspection that surprises first-timers. NiagaraFallsLimo.net meets the Maple Leaf on both sides of the river, and this guide covers what happens in between.
Which Amtrak station is closest to Niagara Falls?
Amtrak's Niagara Falls, New York station, at 825 Depot Avenue West, is about 3.4 km (2.1 mi) by road from Niagara Falls State Park, usually 6–8 minutes. For the Canadian side, stay aboard to Niagara Falls, Ontario after the border stop. NiagaraFallsLimo.net books tracked pickups at either station for a fixed fare.
Amtrak to Niagara Falls: the stops in order
Amtrak's Maple Leaf page lists the route's stops, and the ones that matter here, heading north, are:
- Buffalo-Depew (BUF), 55 Dick Road, Depew, NY. A suburban station with a waiting room, east of the city.
- Buffalo-Exchange Street (BFX), 75 Exchange Street. Downtown Buffalo, within walking distance of Niagara Square.
- Niagara Falls, NY (NFL), 825 Depot Avenue West. A station building with a waiting room, by the river gorge.
- Niagara Falls, ON (NFS), 4267 Bridge Street. VIA's small, unstaffed Canadian station.
- St. Catharines and Grimsby, ON, then on to Toronto.
Southbound trains call at the same stations in reverse. Keep in mind the train is not the only way across. The Whirlpool Rapids Bridge between the two Niagara Falls stations is reserved for NEXUS cars, so a hired car without an all-NEXUS party crosses at the Rainbow Bridge.
How the border crossing works on the train
This is the part that catches people out. Amtrak's guidance on crossing the US–Canadian border says that inspections on journeys to or from Toronto take place in Niagara Falls. Passengers detrain with their baggage at the border, go through inspection, and then reboard the same train.
What that means in practice:
- Pack so you can carry everything yourself. All of it comes off the train with you.
- Keep documents in hand. Amtrak says each passenger must have their own ID, carry the original valid document, and use the same ID selected when booking. Copies and expired documents are refused.
- Expect variable timing. Amtrak notes that delays are usually caused by customs and immigration procedures. Nobody can tell you in advance how long the stop will take.
- Arrive early for departures. For trips leaving Toronto, Amtrak advises arriving at least 30 minutes before departure. Travellers who are not US or Canadian citizens should allow more than an hour.
If you are starting in Toronto and going to New York, VIA adds one more rule. Its customs page sets a ticket deadline of 8:30 a.m. on the travel day, since the full list of passengers is sent to US Customs at that point.
Documents by direction
Heading north into Canada. The Canada Border Services Agency recommends that US citizens carry a valid passport. A NEXUS card or other proof of citizenship is also accepted, as described on our entering Canada documents page. Visa-exempt foreign nationals arriving by train generally do not need an eTA, which is tied to flying to Canada, but visa-required nationals still need a visa.
Heading south into the United States. Amtrak says non-US, non-Canadian citizens must apply for the I-94 arrival record and pre-pay the fee online, up to seven days before the trip. The I-94 land-border fee is US$30 as of 2026. Visa Waiver travellers also need an approved ESTA. Our entering the USA documents page covers ESTA, the CBP Link app and the rules for children.
Children: US and Canadian citizens under 16 may show a birth certificate instead of a passport at land and rail crossings, under 19 when travelling with a school or youth group. If a child travels with only one parent, carry a consent letter.
Get off in New York State, or ride on to Ontario?
Choose your station by where you are sleeping.
Staying on the US side. Get off at Niagara Falls, NY. From the station, our route checks give about 2.8 km (1.7 mi) to the Sheraton at the Falls, 300 Third Street, and about 3.4 km (2.1 mi) to the State Park entrance area, each under 10 minutes. See our Niagara Falls, NY hotels guide and the Niagara Falls State Park page for drop-off detail.
Staying on the Canadian side. Ride on to Niagara Falls, Ontario. The border inspection is part of the stop, and from Bridge Street a Fallsview hotel is about 5 km (3 mi) by road. Getting off in New York and driving over instead means a car crossing at the Rainbow Bridge, about 7 km (4.4 mi) and 13 minutes plus the inspection queue. That only makes sense if you want to see the American side on the way.
Flying out of Buffalo after the trip. Niagara Falls, NY station to the Buffalo Niagara International terminal area is about 40 km (25 mi), usually 35–40 minutes by car.

What the inspection officers will ask about
Because the bags come off the train, declarations matter more here than on a quick car crossing. A few rules are worth knowing before you shop:
- Cannabis is illegal to take across the border in either direction, whatever its legal status where you bought it. That includes CBD and THC oils.
- Returning US residents get an $800 duty-free exemption after at least 48 hours abroad, or $200 after a shorter trip, according to CBP's duty information.
- Canadian residents returning home lose the personal exemption on same-day trips. After 48 hours or more away, goods worth up to CA$800 come in duty-free, including limited alcohol.
- Currency worth CA$10,000 or more must be declared when entering Canada.
If you bought wine in Niagara-on-the-Lake to take home to New York, keep the receipts together and the bottles easy to reach.
Using Amtrak to Niagara Falls for a two-country stay
The Maple Leaf works neatly for a split stay. Ride north from New York, get off on the US side for a night near the State Park and Goat Island, then cross by car to a Fallsview hotel for the rest of the trip. On the way home, board at Niagara Falls, Ontario and clear US inspection once at the Niagara Falls stop, with everything you bought already declared.
The car leg in the middle is short: about 7 km (4.4 mi) via the Rainbow Bridge, usually 13 minutes plus the queue. A chauffeur handles the bridge and the bags, and each passenger hands their own documents to the officer.
Bikes, bags and comfort
The Maple Leaf page notes that carry-on bicycles are only available between Niagara Falls, NY and New York. Cyclists planning to ride the Niagara Parkway should get off on the US side or arrange a car for the bike.
On the Canadian portion, the café car accepts only credit cards, prepaid credit cards and VIA Rail gift cards, according to Amtrak. Bring a card rather than cash for the second half of the trip.
Chauffeur vs rideshare vs taxi for this trip
| Option | Station to hotel | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pre-booked chauffeur, either station | under 10 min on the same side; car waiting | fixed fare via booker | handled for you | families, late trains, onward border crossings |
| Rideshare at Niagara Falls, NY | under 10 min once matched | surge pricing | depends on the car | US-side hotels, solo travellers |
| Taxi | under 10 min once you have one | metered | standard trunk | short hops |
| Walk from the NY station | about 40 min to the State Park | free | light bags only | daytime, good weather |
| Rideshare across the border | not dependable | varies | n/a | not recommended; drivers may not cross |
The honest verdict: if you are staying in downtown Niagara Falls, NY and the train arrives in daylight, a rideshare or taxi from the station is perfectly reasonable. The pre-booked car earns its place when the train runs hours late after inspection. It also helps when you are travelling with children or heavy bags, or need to cross the river by car. Because the train is tracked, the chauffeur is still there when the delayed Maple Leaf finally pulls in. Our cross-border car service explains how the bridge crossings work by road.

Who it suits
Individuals who like slow travel get a scenic day and a short final ride. Couples can make the train the first chapter of the holiday, with a car waiting for the five minutes to the hotel. Families should weigh the luggage-off-the-train inspection carefully; it is manageable, but a car at the end removes the last effort. Groups of six to twelve can meet a single Sprinter at the station rather than chasing several cabs.
