If your itinerary says VIA Rail Niagara Falls, you are arriving at one of the quieter stations on Canada's passenger network. There is no ticket hall full of shops and no left-luggage office. The building opens shortly before the train and closes shortly after it leaves. For international travellers used to European or Asian rail hubs, this is the most important thing to know before stepping off.
None of this is a problem once you know it. NiagaraFallsLimo.net meets trains here, and the notes below come from planning those pickups.
Where is the VIA Rail station in Niagara Falls?
VIA Rail's Niagara Falls station is at 4267 Bridge Street, Niagara Falls, Ontario, near the Whirlpool Rapids Bridge and two blocks from the old downtown. It is about 4 km from the Falls; Fallsview hotels are about 5 km by road, usually 8–10 minutes. NiagaraFallsLimo.net books tracked train pickups online at fixed fares.
Which VIA Rail Niagara Falls train actually stops here
The VIA service to Niagara Falls is the cross-border Maple Leaf, which links Toronto Union Station with New York City. Amtrak lists it as a daily departure taking about 12 hours 30 minutes end to end, with stops at Niagara Falls, Ontario, St. Catharines and Grimsby on the Canadian side. VIA sells it for journeys starting in Canada, and Amtrak sells it too.
That has two consequences for planning:
- One train each way per day. Miss it and there is no later VIA train. GO Transit's trains and buses use the same address and are your backup; our post on the GO train to Niagara Falls covers them.
- Border paperwork for some passengers. If you are travelling on from Toronto to New York, VIA's customs information page says tickets must be bought by 8:30 a.m. on the day of departure, because a complete passenger list goes to US Customs. Our Amtrak Maple Leaf guide explains the inspection stop.
What the station has, and what it does not
VIA's own Niagara Falls station page is refreshingly direct. It lists:
- Unstaffed. No ticket agent on site.
- Open 30 minutes before a train arrives and 30 minutes after it leaves. Outside those windows, the doors are closed.
- A waiting room, washrooms and telephones.
- No lockers and no baggage storage, and no checked baggage service.
- No unaccompanied minors may travel to or from this station.
Accessibility is reasonable for a small station. VIA says the entrance and platform are wheelchair accessible. A wheelchair lift is available with 48 hours' notice to VIA, and a courtesy wheelchair helps with boarding. A service-animal relief area sits near the VIA flag post.
The practical message: you cannot drop your bags here and wander off to see the Falls. If your hotel room is not ready yet, take the bags to the hotel first. A chauffeur can hold luggage in the car during a short "By the hour" booking while you see the sights.
Distances from the station to the main hotel areas
The station is in Niagara Falls' north end, and the tourist district runs south along the river. Our route checks give these typical drive times:
| From VIA Niagara Falls station to | Distance | Usual drive |
|---|---|---|
| Great Wolf Lodge | 2 km or so | under 5 min |
| Clifton Hill and Falls Avenue hotels | about 3 km | 4–6 min |
| Fallsview Boulevard hotels | about 5.3 km | 8–10 min |
| Table Rock Centre, at the Horseshoe Falls | close to 6 km | about 10 min |
| Old Town, Niagara-on-the-Lake | roughly 21 km | under 30 min |
| Toronto Pearson airport | about 120 km | 1 h 30 – 1 h 40 off-peak |
For hotel detail, see our guides to Clifton Hill and Lundy's Lane hotels and Great Wolf Lodge, the closest big resort to the station.
Four ways to get from the platform to your hotel
1. Walk. Realistic only for light travellers going to the nearest hotels. Clifton Hill is about 3 km; the route to Fallsview climbs the escarpment.
2. WEGO. Niagara Parks' visitor bus stops at the GO/VIA station on its Green Line. Fares are posted on the WEGO page; as of 2026 an adult 24-hour pass is $16.00 CAD, tax included. Buses run less often in the off-season and stop in the evening, and reaching Fallsview usually means changing lines at Table Rock.
3. Taxi or rideshare. Fine for a quick hop if one is free when you come out. A full train empties at once, though, and the station closes 30 minutes after departure, so a long wait on Bridge Street is possible. Our post on station pickups and the taxi line goes into detail.
4. A pre-booked chauffeur. The train is tracked, the chauffeur is waiting when it arrives, and the bags go straight in. This is the option that does not depend on what else is happening at the station that evening. Our train station transfer service covers it.
Arriving from New York on the northbound train
Passengers coming up from New York or Buffalo meet Canada's border at this very station. Amtrak's border-crossing guidance says inspections on trips to and from Toronto take place in Niagara Falls. Passengers detrain with their baggage at the border, then reboard the same train. Each traveller must carry their own original, valid identification, and copies are not accepted.
How long the inspection takes varies, so a pickup time copied from the printed timetable can be wrong. Because we track the train, the chauffeur waits until it is actually in and passengers are cleared. If you are getting off here rather than continuing to Toronto, tell the officer, collect your bags and walk out to the car.
Catching your VIA Rail Niagara Falls departure
Going the other way, time your hotel pickup so you reach the station once the doors are open, which VIA says is 30 minutes before the train. From Fallsview that is usually a 10-minute drive outside summer weekend traffic. Arrive much earlier and you may wait outside a closed building. Arrive late and there is no second train that day.
For a Toronto-bound trip, the Maple Leaf is one of three ways home along with GO trains and buses, so check all three before you book. Our guide to getting to Niagara by train and bus puts them side by side.
Notes for travellers from outside North America
Several small things catch overseas visitors at this station.
- The bridge next door is not for you, probably. The Whirlpool Rapids Bridge, almost beside the station, is reserved for NEXUS members; VIA itself notes that everyone in the vehicle must hold a NEXUS card. To visit the American side by car, a chauffeur uses the Rainbow Bridge instead.
- Documents. If you plan to cross to the US side during your stay, every person needs their own valid passport and, for many nationalities, an ESTA or visa. Our international visitors guide sets out the rules.
- Currency and tax. Prices are in Canadian dollars, and many are shown before HST, Ontario's harmonized sales tax, unless marked as tax-included. The WEGO fares above, for instance, include tax.
- Daylight and season. In winter the station area is quiet after dark, and an evening arrival is the moment most travellers are glad of a pre-booked car.
Chauffeur vs rideshare vs taxi for this trip
| Option | Platform to Fallsview | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Walk | about 1 h, uphill at the end | free | backpack only | fit, light travellers to Clifton Hill |
| WEGO Green Line, then Blue Line | about 45 min or more, with waits and a transfer | WEGO pass, as posted | small bags | daytime arrivals on a sightseeing pass |
| Taxi | 8–10 min once you have one | metered | standard trunk | quick hops when cabs are free |
| Rideshare | 8–10 min once matched | surge pricing at busy times | depends on the car | solo travellers with phones and data |
| Pre-booked chauffeur | 8–10 min, car waiting | fixed fare via booker | handled for you | families, evening arrivals, heavy luggage, onward trips |
Plainly put: for a daytime arrival with a backpack and a WEGO pass, you do not need a car from this station. Book one when you arrive after dark, carry suitcases, travel with children who need seats, or are heading on to Niagara-on-the-Lake or the airport. It also suits anyone who would rather not stand outside a closed station waiting for an app to find a driver.

Who it suits
Individuals: a solo traveller on a daytime train can manage with WEGO; an evening arrival is better with a car. Couples: the Maple Leaf from Toronto plus a short chauffeured ride makes a relaxed start to a Fallsview weekend. Families: the station has no luggage storage and no staff, so a car with child seats ready at the door saves the hardest ten minutes of the trip. Our families page has more. Groups: six or more with bags fit an SUV or Sprinter in one go, rather than three separate cabs.
