Rochester Airport Arrivals Visiting Niagara Falls Canada

Rochester is not the obvious airport for Niagara Falls, and for many trips it is not the right one. For some travellers, though, the schedule or the fare out of ROC is simply better. Here is what the longer drive involves and how to make it painless.

Most visitors to the Canadian side of Niagara Falls fly into Toronto Pearson or Buffalo Niagara. A smaller number land at Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport (ROC), usually because their airline, their loyalty programme or the price of the ticket pointed them there. If that is you, the trip still works. It is simply a longer drive with a border in it.

NiagaraFallsLimo.net runs the Rochester airport to Niagara Falls transfer as a standard cross-border trip. This post sets out the distance, the route, the crossing and the honest comparison with flying into Buffalo instead.

How far is Rochester airport from Niagara Falls, Canada?

About 143 km (89 mi) from ROC to the Fallsview hotels, usually 1 h 50 – 2 h 10 of driving plus the Canadian border inspection. NiagaraFallsLimo.net drives the New York State Thruway and crosses at Lewiston-Queenston or the Rainbow Bridge. Book the transfer online with your flight number.

Why some couples choose Rochester over Buffalo

Buffalo Niagara International is far closer, about 42 km from the Fallsview hotels. So why would anyone land in Rochester?

  • Schedules. ROC describes itself as a small hub with about 120 flights a day to 19 nonstop destinations (ROC airport information). Its nonstop list includes Delta to Atlanta, Detroit and New York, American to Boston, Charlotte, Chicago and Philadelphia, United to Chicago and Newark, Southwest to Baltimore and Orlando, JetBlue to New York JFK, plus Allegiant, Avelo and Breeze to a range of leisure cities (ROC nonstop destinations). A traveller connecting from a city that Buffalo does not serve directly may find a better routing here.
  • Fares. Sometimes the price of the ticket into Rochester is lower than into Buffalo for the same dates. Sometimes it is not. It is worth checking both, and then comparing the difference against the longer ground transfer.
  • Combining trips. Couples visiting the Finger Lakes or family in the Rochester area often fly in and out of ROC and add Niagara as a two- or three-night stop.

One change to know about: Spirit Airlines stopped operating at Rochester after January 7, 2026, so older blog posts that mention Spirit fares from ROC are out of date.

The route from ROC to the Falls

The drive is almost all motorway.

  1. ROC to the Thruway. From the airport the car joins the interstate network toward I-90, the New York State Thruway, heading west.
  2. The Thruway west to Buffalo. The longest stretch, through farmland and past Batavia. The Thruway has used cashless tolling since November 2020: there are no booths, and tolls are charged by E-ZPass or mailed to the vehicle's registered owner. You will not notice it; your fare covers the trip.
  3. Around Buffalo. The route leaves the Thruway for the I-290 and then the I-190 north toward Niagara Falls, New York.
  4. The bridge. The chauffeur chooses between the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge and the Rainbow Bridge based on live waits into Canada.
  5. Into Niagara Falls, Ontario. From Queenston the car follows the escarpment road or Highway 405 and the QEW to the Falls; from the Rainbow Bridge you are at Clifton Hill within minutes.

Off-peak, the driving time is usually just under two hours. Buffalo rush hours around the I-290 and I-190 can add time on weekday afternoons, and lake-effect snow can slow the Thruway in winter.

Which bridge from the Rochester side?

Coming from the east on the I-190, both bridges are close together.

  • Lewiston-Queenston has ten car lanes into Canada and a NEXUS lane from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily, according to the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission. It also carries trucks, which can slow the approach on weekday mornings. For visitors heading to Niagara-on-the-Lake rather than the Falls, it lands in Queenston, on the right side of the gorge for wine country. Our Lewiston-Queenston Bridge page explains the approach.
  • Rainbow Bridge lands right beside Clifton Hill and the Falls, with 15 car inspection lanes into Canada. On busy summer evenings it is often the more crowded of the two.

Before your chauffeur commits to either, they check the Canada-bound estimates published by the Canada Border Services Agency on its border wait times page. CBSA notes that its estimates do not include delays on the roads leading to a crossing. We never promise a crossing time.

Documents for entering Canada

Everyone in the vehicle must carry their own documents. The CBSA's travel documents page recommends that US citizens travel with a valid passport, while allowing other proof of citizenship such as a birth certificate or enhanced driver's licence. US permanent residents arriving by land should carry their permanent resident card and passport. Travellers from eTA-required countries generally do not need an eTA to enter Canada by land, but visa-required nationals still need a visitor visa.

If you are travelling with children, a consent letter is recommended when a child is not with both parents. Cannabis may not be carried across the border in either direction. Our documents for entering Canada page covers each case.

Arriving at ROC in the evening

Many of Rochester's flights from the big connecting hubs land in the afternoon or evening, which puts the Thruway drive and the border crossing after dark. That is not a problem in itself, since the Lewiston-Queenston and Rainbow bridges both handle traffic around the clock, but it changes the planning in small ways:

  • Eat before you leave the airport or ask for a stop on the US side; once you are across the border it is a short run to the hotel, but the first hour is open highway.
  • Have your documents in hand, not in the trunk, before the car reaches the bridge.
  • Tell your hotel you are arriving late. A two-hour transfer after an evening landing can put check-in close to midnight.
  • Use meet and greet if it is your first time at ROC; your chauffeur waits inside with a name board and walks you to the car.

Flight tracking means a late-running arrival is followed automatically, so the pickup moves with the landing time.

The way back to Rochester

The return is the same route in reverse, with the US border on the way. Leave plenty of time: we suggest leaving a Niagara Falls hotel at least 4 h 30 before a domestic flight from ROC, more on holiday weekends. The US inspection queue is the unknown, and visitors who need an I-94 should allow extra. No toll is charged at the Niagara bridges for traffic entering the United States.

Booking it with NiagaraFallsLimo.net in 3 steps

  1. Enter ROC and your flight. Choose Rochester airport as the pickup and add the flight number so we track the landing. Your Niagara hotel or inn is the drop-off.
  2. Pick a vehicle. Each class shows a fixed all-in fare; the border crossing is part of the trip, not an extra.
  3. Add passengers, bags and options. Meet and greet, child seats and bag count, then pay and receive your confirmation by email.

The honest verdict. If you have not bought your tickets, look hard at Buffalo first; it is a much shorter drive to the same bridges. If you already have a Rochester ticket, or a schedule or price that clearly beats Buffalo's, the longer transfer is perfectly manageable. A rental car makes sense if you want to drive around Niagara and the Finger Lakes for a week. For a straight transfer to a Niagara hotel, especially after an evening arrival, a pre-booked chauffeur who handles the Thruway, the Buffalo interchanges and the bridge lets you arrive rested. Our chauffeur, taxi and rideshare guide and the cross-border car service page explain how cross-border trips work.

Who it suits

This route suits couples most of all: a romantic weekend at the Falls or in wine country often starts with whatever flight the couple's home airport offers, and the ride gives them two quiet hours instead of a rental-car navigation exercise. Our couples page has more ideas. Individuals with frequent-flyer status on an airline that serves Rochester better than Buffalo use it too. Families should weigh the longer drive with children; it is doable with planned stops and child seats requested in the booker. Groups visiting both the Finger Lakes and Niagara can split the trip with a Sprinter or SUV. If wine is the point of the trip, our Niagara-on-the-Lake wineries page is a good next read, along with the Rochester airport transfer page and our post on Rochester to Niagara Falls by private car versus driving yourself.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the drive from Rochester airport to Niagara Falls, Ontario?

About 143 km (89 mi), usually 1 h 50 – 2 h 10 of driving off-peak. The Canadian border inspection at Lewiston-Queenston or the Rainbow Bridge is extra and varies, and Buffalo rush hours or winter snow can add time.

Is it better to fly into Rochester or Buffalo for Niagara Falls?

For most travellers, Buffalo, because it is about 42 km from the Falls instead of 143. Rochester can make sense when its schedule or fare is clearly better, or when you are combining Niagara with the Finger Lakes or the Rochester area.

Which bridge do you use from Rochester?

Usually the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge or the Rainbow Bridge, chosen on the day from live CBSA wait estimates into Canada. Lewiston-Queenston suits Niagara-on-the-Lake stays; the Rainbow Bridge lands right beside Clifton Hill and the Falls.

Are there tolls between Rochester and Niagara Falls?

The New York State Thruway is tolled electronically with no booths, and the Niagara bridges charge a toll on vehicles entering Canada. With NiagaraFallsLimo.net you do not handle either; the booker shows a fixed all-in fare before you pay.

Do Americans need a passport to drive from Rochester into Canada?

The CBSA recommends that US citizens carry a valid passport, though other proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate or an enhanced driver's licence, may be accepted. Carry a passport if you have one; it avoids questions and is required if you fly internationally.

Can I go straight from Rochester airport to Niagara-on-the-Lake?

Yes. Enter your inn or winery address as the drop-off. Crossing at Lewiston-Queenston puts you on the wine-country side of the river, and the chauffeur takes you directly to the door.

Is there a bus or train from Rochester to Niagara Falls, Canada?

Amtrak's Maple Leaf links New York State with Niagara Falls, New York and Niagara Falls, Ontario, but it runs once a day and does not serve the airport, so you would first need to reach a Rochester-area station. For an airport arrival with luggage, a direct car transfer is far simpler, and it delivers you to your hotel door rather than a station.
