On a map, Buffalo Niagara International Airport (BUF) looks like the obvious way into Niagara Falls. It is far closer to the Horseshoe Falls than Toronto Pearson, and for travellers from US cities it often has the more direct flight. The catch is the Niagara River. The Canadian side of the Falls, where most of the big hotels look straight at the Horseshoe, is in Ontario, and getting there from the Buffalo airport to Niagara Falls, Ontario means crossing an international border.

That crossing is routine, but it changes how you should plan the transfer: who drives, which bridge, and what each passenger has in their pocket. At NiagaraFallsLimo.net cross-border trips are normal service. The chauffeur meets you at BUF, crosses the bridge with you and drops you at the hotel door.

How do you get from Buffalo airport to Niagara Falls, Ontario?

NiagaraFallsLimo.net picks you up at Buffalo Niagara International and drives you across the border in one car, about 42–45 km (26–28 mi) to the Fallsview hotels, usually 45–55 minutes plus the bridge queue. Every passenger needs their own valid documents. Enter your flight and hotel in the online booker to see the fixed fare.

The alternative is to stitch the trip together yourself: a ride to the border, a walk or second ride across, and a third vehicle on the Canadian side. It can be done. It is rarely worth it with luggage.

Why fly into Buffalo at all?

Buffalo describes itself as offering up to 100 nonstop flights a day to 31 destinations. For travellers from New York, Florida, Atlanta or the US Midwest, that can mean a nonstop to BUF where Toronto would need a connection, or a domestic US flight instead of an international one. For Canadians from elsewhere, it rarely makes sense; Toronto and Hamilton are easier.

The drive from BUF to the Canadian Falls is short. Without traffic or a border queue it is under an hour, while the drive from Toronto Pearson is about 125 km and usually 1 h 20 to 1 h 40. What BUF adds is uncertainty at the bridge. Our comparison of flying into Buffalo vs Toronto for Niagara Falls weighs the two in detail.

Book your BUF to Ontario transfer

Buffalo airport to Niagara Falls, Ontario: three bridges

Four bridges cross the Niagara River near the Falls. Three of them matter for a chauffeured car from BUF; the fourth is a special case.

Rainbow Bridge: the direct one

The Rainbow Bridge lands you right at the foot of Clifton Hill, minutes from the Fallsview and Falls Avenue hotels. From BUF the route runs on Interstates 290 and 190 and the Niagara Scenic Parkway to downtown Niagara Falls, New York, then over the bridge. It is about 45 km (28 mi), usually 50 minutes plus the queue. Cars, buses and limousines are allowed; commercial trucks are not.

Peace Bridge: the southern option

The Peace Bridge connects Buffalo with Fort Erie, Ontario. From there the car follows the QEW north to Niagara Falls. It is a little longer, about 52 km (32 mi) and usually 50 minutes plus the queue, and it is useful when the Rainbow Bridge is backed up. The Peace Bridge is run by a separate authority and its tolls are cashless.

Lewiston-Queenston Bridge: for wine country

The Lewiston-Queenston Bridge crosses north of the Falls, near Queenston. It is about 57 km (35 mi) to the Fallsview hotels but the natural choice for Niagara-on-the-Lake. It also carries the region's commercial truck traffic.

Whirlpool Rapids Bridge: NEXUS only

This bridge is reserved for NEXUS cardholders and only operates from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. A hired car may use it only if every person in the vehicle, including the chauffeur, is a NEXUS member carrying their card. In practice that rules it out for most airport transfers.

Your chauffeur chooses the bridge on the day, using the live wait-time feeds. Our cross-border car service page explains how that decision is made.

Documents, passenger by passenger

This is the part nobody can do for you. Each passenger must carry their own valid documents. The Canada Border Services Agency's guidance, summarised:

  • US citizens: CBSA recommends a valid passport. Other proof of citizenship and identity, such as a birth certificate, a certificate of citizenship or a US enhanced driver's licence, may be accepted. Bring a passport if you have one, because you will need a document such as a passport, passport card or enhanced driver's licence to re-enter the US later.
  • US permanent residents arriving by land directly from the US should present their permanent resident card.
  • Canadian citizens enter by right; carry a valid Canadian passport.
  • International visitors: Canada's electronic travel authorization (eTA) is required to board a flight to Canada, but IRCC says that in most cases travellers from eTA-required countries arriving by car do not need one. Visa-required nationals still need a Canadian visitor visa by land.
  • Children: carry each child's identification, and if they are travelling without both parents, a signed consent letter is strongly recommended. Our crossing with children page explains what to prepare.

The full list is on CBSA's travel documents page, and our own documents for entering Canada and international visitors pages translate it into plain language. One more rule worth knowing: cannabis cannot be taken across the border in either direction, whatever its legal status where you came from.

At the Canadian booth

What to expect when the car reaches primary inspection:

  1. Your chauffeur pulls into a car lane and stops at the booth.
  2. Passports and documents are handed to the officer, usually all together.
  3. The officer may ask each passenger questions: where you are going, how long you are staying, what you are bringing.
  4. Answer briefly and truthfully, and declare anything you are carrying for others or for sale.

Most cars are cleared quickly; some are sent for a secondary check. Neither we nor anyone else can promise how long a crossing will take.

Planning the return to BUF

Remember that the trip home crosses the border again, this time into the United States, where US Customs and Border Protection inspects the car. Non-US citizens may need an I-94, and CBP encourages applying in advance through its CBP Link app or website. Leave generous time before a US departure; our border timing guide for flights out of Buffalo works through it.

Tolls and live wait times

Tolls on these bridges are charged only in one direction, entering Canada. As of 2026, the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission charges US$6.00 or CA$8.50 per passenger car on the Rainbow, Whirlpool Rapids and Lewiston-Queenston bridges, with limousines charged per axle. The NiagaraFallsLimo.net fare shown in the booker is all-in, so check the summary to see what it covers.

For wait times heading into Canada, CBSA publishes estimates on its border wait times page. CBSA notes that its figures do not include delays on the roads leading to a crossing. Our border wait times guide explains how to read the different feeds.

The honest verdict. If you are an American travelling light and you already know a taxi that crosses the border, that is a reasonable way to go, and a rental car is fine if the rental company allows Canada. Where a pre-booked chauffeur wins is in the details that go wrong at borders: a driver who is not prepared to cross, a group split across two cars at the booth, children without seats, or a long queue at one bridge when another is moving. Our post on what riders run into with Uber from Buffalo airport looks at the rideshare side honestly.

Reserve your cross-border chauffeur

Who it suits

Individuals flying in from US cities get the shortest airport run to the Canadian Falls with no change of vehicle at the bridge. Couples step out at the hotel door, often on Fallsview Boulevard, within an hour or so of landing. Families keep children, car seats and passports together in one car through the booth. Groups of up to twelve travelling light can share an Executive Sprinter; groups with checked bags should look at two SUVs.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to get from Buffalo Airport to Niagara Falls, Canada?

The drive is about 42 to 45 km (26 to 28 mi) to the Fallsview hotels, usually 45 to 55 minutes without traffic. The border crossing adds an unpredictable amount on top; check CBSA's wait-time estimates before you land.

What is the best way to get from Buffalo Airport to Niagara Falls, Canada?

For most travellers with luggage, a single pre-booked car that crosses the border is the simplest: no change of vehicle at the bridge and one driver who handles the route. NiagaraFallsLimo.net shows the fixed all-in fare in the booker before you pay.

Do I need a passport to go from Buffalo to Niagara Falls, Ontario?

CBSA recommends that US citizens carry a valid passport, though other proof of citizenship and identity may be accepted. Visitors of other nationalities need their passport and, if they are visa-required, a Canadian visitor visa. Every passenger must carry their own documents.

Do international visitors need an eTA to enter Canada by car from Buffalo?

In most cases, no. IRCC says travellers from eTA-required countries arriving by car, bus, train or boat usually do not need an eTA, which is for boarding flights to Canada. Visa-required nationals still need a visitor visa by land.

Which bridge is best from Buffalo Airport?

The Rainbow Bridge is the most direct for the Fallsview and Clifton Hill hotels. The Peace Bridge is a good alternative when the Rainbow is busy, and the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge suits Niagara-on-the-Lake. Your chauffeur picks the bridge on the day using live wait times.

Is there a toll to cross into Canada?

Yes, tolls are collected only when entering Canada. As of 2026 the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission charges US$6.00 or CA$8.50 per car, with limousines charged per axle, and the Peace Bridge has its own cashless tolls.

Can I use the Whirlpool Rapids Bridge in a hired car?

Only if everyone in the vehicle, including the chauffeur, is a NEXUS member carrying their card. The bridge is NEXUS-only and open from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., so most airport transfers use the Rainbow, Peace or Lewiston-Queenston bridges instead.
