Look at a map and the answer seems obvious. Buffalo Niagara International Airport (BUF) is about 43 km (27 mi) from the Fallsview hotels in Niagara Falls, Ontario. Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) is about 121 km (75 mi) away. Case closed?
Not quite. Choosing between Buffalo or Toronto airport for Niagara Falls is really three questions at once: which airport has the better flight for you, which border you would rather cross and where, and how you get from the terminal to your hotel. NiagaraFallsLimo.net drives both routes every day, so here is how we would weigh them.
Is it better to fly into Buffalo or Toronto for Niagara Falls?
Fly into Buffalo if you are coming from a US city and staying on the Falls side: BUF is about 43 km (27 mi), roughly 45 minutes plus the bridge. Fly into Toronto Pearson, about 121 km (75 mi) and 1 h 35 off-peak, for international routes or a Toronto stop. NiagaraFallsLimo.net quotes both transfers on its booker.
Buffalo or Toronto airport for Niagara Falls: the three questions, scored
| Question | Buffalo Niagara International (BUF) | Toronto Pearson (YYZ) |
|---|---|---|
| Distance to Fallsview | about 43 km (27 mi) | about 121 km (75 mi) |
| Typical drive, off-peak | about 45 minutes, plus the bridge queue | about 1 h 35, more on a Friday |
| Border crossing | by road, at a Niagara bridge | at the airport, on arrival |
| Flight network | up to 100 nonstop flights a day to 31 destinations, per the airport | the region's main international gateway |
| Best for | US travellers, US-side add-ons, short weekends | long-haul visitors, Toronto plus Niagara trips |
BUF's airport overview describes that network of up to 100 daily nonstops. Those destinations are mainly US cities, which is why Buffalo works best for American visitors and for anyone connecting through a US hub.
Question one: the flight itself
Start with the airfare and the schedule, not the distance. A cheaper or nonstop flight into one airport can outweigh an hour on the road. When you compare, add three things to the fare:
- Connection time. A connection to reach Buffalo may cost more hours than the longer drive from Pearson.
- Arrival hour. A flight landing at 11 pm into Pearson means a late-night drive of 1 h 35. The same hour into Buffalo means a shorter drive but a late bridge crossing.
- The ground transfer. Price the car for both airports on our booker. The fixed fare differs with distance, and seeing both side by side settles a lot of debates.
Other airports exist too. John C. Munro Hamilton International (YHM) is about 86 km (54 mi) from Fallsview, usually 1 h 15, and Niagara Falls International (IAG) on the New York side lists only Allegiant flights to Florida and South Carolina. Our post on which airport is closest to Niagara Falls covers all four.
Question two: where you cross the border
This is the question people skip, and it is the one that matters most for international visitors.
Fly into Toronto Pearson and you clear Canadian immigration and customs at the airport. Visa-exempt travellers flying to Canada need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA), which costs CA$7 (as of 2026), unless they are exempt, as US citizens are. After that, the drive to Niagara Falls is a domestic trip with no border at all.
Fly into Buffalo and you enter the United States at the airport first. Visitors from Visa Waiver countries need an approved ESTA; the fee is US$40.62 from 16 October 2026. Then you cross into Canada by road at a Niagara bridge. Canada's eTA eligibility page says that in most cases travellers arriving by car, bus, train or boat do not need an eTA, although visa-required nationals still need a visitor visa.
Flying home from Buffalo means crossing back into the United States by road. CBP's I-94 page says Visa Waiver travellers need an approved ESTA before arriving at a US land border, and it encourages applying for the I-94 in advance. Plan the documents for both directions before you book a Buffalo itinerary.
For US and Canadian citizens it is simpler. Carry a valid passport or another accepted document; our pages on documents for entering Canada and for international visitors set out who needs what.
Question three: the ride to your hotel
From Pearson, pre-arranged cars meet passengers at Terminal 1 Door A and Terminal 3 Door A, the designated points on Pearson's pre-arranged services page. The route runs along Highway 427 or 401, then the QEW past Hamilton and St. Catharines to Niagara Falls. Off-peak it is about 1 h 35; on a summer Friday afternoon, allow 2 hours or more.
From Buffalo, the drive is shorter but includes the border. Most Falls-bound cars cross at the Rainbow Bridge or the Peace Bridge; for Niagara-on-the-Lake, about 58 km (36 mi) from BUF, the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge is the natural choice. Every passenger shows their own document at the Canadian booth. CBSA publishes live wait times for Canada-bound traffic, but no one can promise how long a crossing takes, so leave slack in the evening plan.
Compare the BUF and YYZ transfer fares
Chauffeur vs rideshare vs taxi for this trip
| Mode | Door-to-door time to Fallsview | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rideshare from Pearson | about 1 h 35 off-peak, plus the pickup wait | app pricing, surge pricing possible | trunk space | light travellers outside rush hour |
| Rideshare from Buffalo | depends on finding a driver willing to cross | app pricing; cross-border rides not guaranteed | trunk space | US-side stays rather than the Canadian Falls |
| Taxi from either airport | similar drive time | metered or quoted by the company | sedan or minivan | short notice, light bags |
| Bus or train | longer, with at least one transfer | posted public fares | what you can carry | solo budget travellers |
| Private chauffeur | about 45 minutes plus the bridge from BUF, about 1 h 35 from YYZ | fixed fare via booker, shown before you pay | SUV takes six bags | families, groups, late flights, any border crossing |
Honest verdict: from Pearson, a solo traveller with a backpack can manage by bus or rideshare without much trouble. From Buffalo, the border changes things. Niagara Falls International warns on its own ground-transportation page that rideshare services may not cross the border, and Buffalo Niagara publishes a separate Canadian ground transportation page for operators who do carry passengers to Canada. That is why a pre-booked car with a chauffeur who crosses with you is the usual choice on the Buffalo side.
Late arrivals and early departures
Flight times change the picture more than most people expect. A delayed evening arrival into Pearson simply means a later drive; the QEW is usually quieter after 9 pm, and there is no border to face at the end of a long day. A late arrival into Buffalo is shorter on the road, but you still stop at a Canadian booth, so keep every passport within reach rather than packed in a checked case.
Early departures run the other way. Leaving Fallsview for a 7 am flight from Pearson means a pickup in the small hours to cover about 121 km and still allow for check-in and security. Leaving for an early Buffalo flight means only about 43 km of driving, but the US-bound bridge inspection sits in the middle of the trip. Either way, we track inbound flights on airport pickups, so a delay moves the chauffeur's arrival with it, and the booker lets you set the outbound pickup time yourself. If you are unsure how early to leave, our early-flight timing guide for Pearson works through the hours.
Buffalo or Toronto airport for Niagara Falls: two travellers, two answers
Maria, from Chicago, three nights at Fallsview. Nonstop to Buffalo, a 45-minute drive, one bridge crossing with her passport, and she is at the hotel before a Toronto arrival would have cleared the QEW. Buffalo wins.
Kenji, from Tokyo, a week in Ontario. A nonstop to Toronto Pearson, Canadian entry on an eTA, two nights in Toronto, then a car to Niagara-on-the-Lake. Flying to Buffalo would add a US entry, an ESTA, and a second land border on the way home. Toronto wins.
Who each airport suits
Individuals from US cities usually do best via Buffalo; long-haul solo travellers via Toronto. Couples planning a short Falls weekend tend to like Buffalo's shorter drive, as long as both passports are in order. Families should weigh the documents question carefully, because every child needs their own; see crossing with children. Groups arriving on different flights often find Pearson simpler, because arrivals are spread across one airport and the trip stays domestic.

Frequently asked questions
Which airport is closest to Niagara Falls, Canada?
Niagara Falls International (IAG) in New York is closest by road, about 14 km, but it lists only Allegiant flights to Florida and South Carolina. Among airports with a wide network, Buffalo Niagara International is closest at about 43 km to Fallsview. Toronto Pearson is about 121 km away.
Do I need a passport to fly into Buffalo and stay in Canada?
You need an accepted document for each border. US citizens can use a passport, passport card or other WHTI document; Canadians a passport or approved alternative. International visitors need a passport, plus an ESTA or US visa for the US and, where applicable, a Canadian visitor visa. Every passenger carries their own.
How long is the drive from Buffalo airport to Niagara Falls, Ontario?
About 43 km (27 mi) to the Fallsview area, usually 45 minutes of driving. Add the time to clear the Canadian booth at the bridge, which varies by day and hour and cannot be predicted. On busy weekends and holidays, leave extra room in your evening plans.
How long is the drive from Toronto Pearson to Niagara Falls?
About 121 km (75 mi) to Fallsview, usually 1 h 35 off-peak. Friday afternoons in summer and holiday weekends can push it past 2 hours on the QEW. There is no border on this route, so the time is driving alone.
Can Uber take me from Buffalo airport to Niagara Falls, Canada?
It is not something to rely on. Niagara Falls International warns that rideshare services may not cross the border, and a driver may decline a cross-border trip. A pre-booked car whose chauffeur crosses with you avoids the uncertainty, and the booker shows the fixed fare first.
Is Buffalo cheaper than Toronto for Niagara Falls?
It depends on the route and the dates. Compare the full trip: airfare, connections, any ESTA or eTA fees, and the ground transfer. Our booker shows the fixed transfer fare from both airports, so you can add it to each flight quote and see which total is lower.
Do I need an eTA if I fly to Buffalo and drive into Canada?
In most cases, no. Canada says travellers from eTA-required countries arriving by car, bus, train or boat usually do not need an eTA, which is required to board a flight to Canada. Visa-required nationals still need a visitor visa, so check your own nationality's rules.
