In late September, if you drive north from the Falls along the river with the windows down, you can smell the harvest before you see it. The crush pads at the wineries along the Niagara Parkway and Niagara Stone Road are working, tractors pull bins of grapes across back roads, and the maples on the escarpment begin to turn. It is the one season when the region's two big draws feel like a single trip.
Niagara Falls in fall rewards visitors who plan the drives as carefully as the tastings. This post covers when the harvest weekends fall, where the colour is best, what the weather usually does, which Falls attractions run until November, and how NiagaraFallsLimo.net builds an autumn day so nobody has to drive after tasting.
Is fall a good time to visit Niagara Falls?
Yes. September and October bring harvest events, autumn colour on the Niagara Parkway and boats still sailing at the Falls. NiagaraFallsLimo.net drives Fallsview to Old Town Niagara-on-the-Lake, about 23 km (15 mi) and 30 minutes by the Parkway, by the hour or point to point. Reserve online at a fixed fare shown before you pay.
Fall also has fewer crowds than summer on weekdays, cooler days that are better for walking, and earlier illumination at the Falls. The trade-off is weekends: harvest Saturdays in wine country are among the busiest of the year for tasting rooms, and they book up.
Harvest weekends in wine country
The grape harvest in the Niagara Peninsula usually runs from late summer into autumn, with each estate picking variety by variety. Icewine grapes are the exception: under VQA Ontario rules they stay on the vine until the air reaches minus 8 °C or colder, so that harvest comes in winter.
The biggest event of the season is the Niagara Grape & Wine Festival. Its Montebello Park weekend in St. Catharines ran from September 24 to 27 in 2026, with free park entry Friday to Sunday, according to the Wine Country Ontario event page. It is usually held in late September. Montebello Park is in downtown St. Catharines, about 20 km (13 mi) from the Fallsview hotels and around 20 minutes by car. Our post on the Grape & Wine Festival weekend by limo has a full plan, and our Niagara wine festivals page lists the calendar.
November brings a quieter tradition. The Wineries of Niagara-on-the-Lake run a seasonal program called Taste the Season in November, with a pass covering member wineries. It suits couples who want tastings without the harvest-weekend bustle.
A few desk notes for harvest Saturdays:
- Book tastings ahead. Many estates take reservations for seated tastings, and walk-in space is tight in late September.
- Start late morning. Tasting rooms fill from early afternoon. A first stop at 11 am is calmer.
- Plan lunch. Winery restaurants book out on harvest weekends. Our post on booking winery lunches explains how to fit one in.

The Parkway in colour
The Niagara Parkway runs 56 km along the Canadian side of the river, through Niagara Parks land from Fort Erie in the south to Niagara-on-the-Lake in the north. In autumn it is one of the prettiest drives in Ontario, and it links the Falls with wine country without touching a highway.
The stretch north of the Falls is the classic autumn route:
- Fallsview to the Niagara Glen. The Glen is a wooded gorge with old-growth Carolinian forest a few kilometres north of the Falls. In fall 2026, Niagara Parks closed part of the Terrace Trail and all of the Whirlpool Trail for maintenance, so check the Niagara Glen page before planning a hike. Hiking is allowed only from sunrise to sunset.
- The Floral Clock and Queenston Heights. The Floral Clock is about 10 km (6 mi) and 15 minutes from Fallsview. Queenston Heights, just beyond it, sits on top of the escarpment, where the trees turn early.
- The wine road into Niagara-on-the-Lake. North of Queenston, the Parkway runs past orchards and vineyards, including estates with Parkway addresses, into Old Town.
The colour usually builds through October, but it varies from year to year with the weather. A chauffeur booked by the hour can take the Parkway slowly, stop where you want a photograph, and pick you up again a few hundred metres on. Our post on the Niagara Parkway scenic drive describes the whole route, and our Niagara Glen and Botanical Gardens page covers the stops north of the Falls.
Falls attractions that run until Thanksgiving and beyond
Fall is the last chance for some of the seasonal attractions:
- Fireworks. The 2026 nightly 10 pm series ran until Monday, October 12, Canadian Thanksgiving. The next Thanksgiving is Monday, October 11, 2027.
- Boats. The Voyage to the Falls cruise is an April-to-November attraction, and across the river the Maid of the Mist sailed until November 8 in 2026.
- Aero Car and White Water Walk. Both are April to November attractions.
- Illumination. The lights come on earlier each week. Niagara Parks' illumination schedule has them on at 6:15 pm from October 1 to 15 and 6:00 pm for the rest of October, then 4:30 pm from November.
Then there is a short pause. The fireworks end, the boats tie up in November, and from November 14, 2026 the Winter Festival of Lights takes over the Parkway and Fallsview. Our post on Thanksgiving weekend along the Parkway covers that holiday specifically.
What the weather usually does
Environment and Climate Change Canada's 1981–2010 climate normals for the Niagara Falls station give a clear picture of the season:
| Month | Average daily high | Average daily low | Total precipitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| September | 21.9 °C | 12.3 °C | 98.2 mm |
| October | 15.1 °C | 6.3 °C | 79.7 mm |
| November | 8.7 °C | 1.1 °C | 91.8 mm |
September is warm enough for a patio lunch and is, on these normals, the wettest month of the year, often in heavy showers. October is crisp. By November, a coat is essential and an early frost is normal. For any vineyard walk, bring shoes that can handle wet grass.
An autumn day for two
A realistic plan for a couple staying in Fallsview on an October Saturday:
- 10:30 Pickup at the hotel; slow Parkway drive north with a stop at the Floral Clock.
- 11:15 First tasting at a Parkway estate, booked ahead.
- 12:30 Second tasting on Niagara Stone Road, where several wineries sit close together.
- 13:30 Lunch in Old Town Niagara-on-the-Lake, then an hour on Queen Street.
- 15:30 A final tasting in St. Davids on the way back south.
- 17:00 Back at the hotel as the Falls light up at 6.
That is about six and a half hours by the hour. Our Niagara wine tour limo page explains how the chauffeur manages the timing, and our Niagara-on-the-Lake wineries guide helps you choose the stops.
Coming from Toronto for a single autumn day
Plenty of people do the harvest season as a day trip. Downtown Toronto to the Fallsview hotels is about 129 km (80 mi), and Toronto to Old Town Niagara-on-the-Lake is a little shorter. Off-peak, either drive usually takes around 1 h 30 to 1 h 45 on the QEW, but autumn Saturday mornings are busy southbound and Sunday evenings northbound, so allow extra time.
A single day can cover the Falls in the morning and two or three wineries in the afternoon, with dinner in Niagara-on-the-Lake before the drive home. That is a long day for one vehicle and one chauffeur, so book it by the hour from your Toronto door. The chauffeur handles the whole loop, and nobody has to choose between a tasting and the drive home.
Booking it with NiagaraFallsLimo.net in 3 steps
- Choose "By the hour". Enter your hotel as the pickup, the date, a start time and five to seven hours for a wine day.
- Pick the vehicle. A Mercedes-Benz E or S-Class for two, a Standard or Executive Black SUV for up to six, an Executive Sprinter for up to twelve. Each class shows its fixed fare.
- Add the plan and pay. List your wineries and lunch booking in the notes, add any extras, and pay securely. Confirmation follows by email.

Chauffeur vs rideshare vs taxi for this trip
| Option | Door-to-door time | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pre-booked chauffeur by the hour | About 30 min Fallsview to Old Town; waits at each stop | Fixed fare via booker | Wine purchases stay in the trunk | Couples and groups doing three or more estates |
| Rideshare | Similar driving times when a car is free | App pricing, may surge | Depends on the car | One winery and back |
| Taxi | Similar driving times | Metered | Standard trunk | A single Old Town visit |
| WEGO + NOTL shuttle | Timetable and transfers at the Floral Clock | Published WEGO pass | Small bags | Sightseeing without tastings at rural estates |
| Driving yourself | Same roads | Fuel and parking | Your car | Only if the driver does not taste |
The honest verdict: a taxi or rideshare to one winery in Old Town and back is perfectly reasonable, and the WEGO pass covers the Niagara-on-the-Lake shuttle for sightseeing. Once a harvest Saturday includes three rural estates, waiting outside for an app car between each one wastes the afternoon. A chauffeur who stays with you, and keeps your bottles sealed in the trunk, is the easy answer.
Who autumn suits
Couples are the natural fit: crisp days, tastings and an early-evening return to a room with a view, and our couples page has more ideas. Individuals who enjoy wine can learn more in a quiet October tasting room than at any other time. Families can combine a Parkway colour drive with the last boat rides of the season. Groups of friends planning a harvest day should book a Sprinter or SUV several weeks out.
Frequently asked questions
When is the best time to see fall colours at Niagara Falls?
The colour usually builds through October along the Niagara Parkway and the escarpment, but the exact peak varies with each year's weather. A mid-October weekday is often a good balance of colour and calmer roads.
When is the Niagara Grape & Wine Festival?
It is usually held in late September. In 2026 the Montebello Park weekend in St. Catharines ran from September 24 to 27, with free park entry Friday to Sunday. Check Wine Country Ontario for the next confirmed dates.
Are the Niagara Falls boats still running in October?
Yes. Niagara Parks lists Niagara City Cruises as running April to November, and the Maid of the Mist ran until November 8 in 2026. Weekday sailings in October are usually calmer than in summer.
When do the Niagara Falls fireworks end for the season?
In 2026 the nightly fireworks ended on Monday, October 12, Canadian Thanksgiving. The Winter Festival of Lights then begins in mid-November, with fireworks on Fridays and Saturdays from November 14, then nightly from December 18 to January 2.
How far is Niagara-on-the-Lake from Niagara Falls?
Old Town Niagara-on-the-Lake is about 23 km (15 mi) from the Fallsview hotels, around 30 minutes by the Niagara Parkway. St. Davids, with several wineries, is closer, and St. Catharines is about 20 km away.
What should I wear for a fall wine tour in Niagara?
Layers. October highs average about 15 °C and lows about 6 °C on the 1981–2010 normals, and September is often showery. Comfortable shoes that cope with wet grass help on vineyard walks.
Can we open a bottle we bought in the car?
No. Bottles stay closed in our cars; under Niagara Region's by-law, a licensed chauffeur must not let anyone drink in the vehicle. Bottles you buy travel sealed in the trunk until you reach your hotel.
