Every December a few of our clients ask the same question in slightly different words: if we spend Christmas in Niagara Falls, will anything actually be open? The short answer is yes, more than in most Ontario towns, because the Falls themselves never close and the tourist core keeps a holiday rhythm of its own. The longer answer depends on which day, which attraction and how you plan to get there. This guide from NiagaraFallsLimo.net takes the three days one at a time.
Is anything open in Niagara Falls on Christmas Day?
Yes. On Christmas Day 2025, Niagara Parks opened Journey Behind the Falls and Niagara Takes Flight from 12 to 8 p.m., the Falls are lit every night, and the Winter Festival of Lights runs nightly. WEGO buses do not run on December 25. NiagaraFallsLimo.net covers the 121 km from Toronto Pearson at a fixed fare booked online.
Those Christmas Day hours come from Niagara Parks' 2025 holiday release, published on December 22, 2025. The agency usually posts its holiday schedule only days before Christmas, so treat last year's list as a guide and check again in the week before you travel.
Christmas in Niagara Falls: the 2026 calendar
Christmas Day 2026 falls on a Friday and Boxing Day on a Saturday. Both are public holidays under Ontario's Employment Standards Act, as is New Year's Day. Christmas Eve is not a public holiday, so it runs closer to a normal Thursday, with some businesses closing early.
The holiday week is also when the fireworks become nightly. The Winter Festival of Lights fires its fireworks at 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays from November 14, then every night from December 18 to January 2, so Christmas night and Boxing Day night both have a show, weather permitting.
Christmas Eve: the easiest of the three days
Most attractions keep normal winter hours or close a little early on December 24, and restaurants are busy with set menus. It is a good arrival day. Check in to a Fallsview hotel in the afternoon, walk the brink as the lights come on at 4:30 p.m., and make dinner the main event.
For drivers, Christmas Eve afternoon is a normal busy travel day on the QEW. From Toronto Pearson to Fallsview is about 121 km (75 mi), usually 1 h 20 – 1 h 40 off-peak, and longer once holiday traffic and weather join in. GO Transit added extra trains on Christmas Eve 2025 on some lines to help commuters home early, but those were Toronto-area lines, not a holiday express to the Falls.
Christmas Day: what was open last year
Based on the 2025 Niagara Parks list, here is what a visitor could do on December 25:
- Journey Behind the Falls, 12 to 8 p.m. The tunnels behind the Horseshoe Falls are one of the few attractions that make sense in December weather.
- Niagara Takes Flight, the flying-theatre ride inside Table Rock Centre, 12 to 8 p.m.
- Table Rock Centre, with washrooms open 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and the Table Rock Shop and Market from noon to 8 p.m.
- The Falls Incline Railway, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., linking the Fallsview hotels with Table Rock.
- WildPlay's Zipline to the Falls, 12 to 6 p.m., for the brave.
- The Falls Parking Lot, 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.
What did not run: the WEGO visitor buses, which Niagara Parks stopped for December 25 in 2025. That leaves walking, taxis, rideshare or a pre-booked car as the only ways around the tourist core on Christmas Day.
The illumination is constant. The Falls are lit from 4:30 p.m. to 2 a.m. every night from November 1 to December 31, according to the Niagara Parks illumination schedule. Our Falls illumination and fireworks page explains the best places to watch from.
Shops are the big exception. Ontario's Retail Business Holidays Act keeps most stores closed on Christmas Day, with exemptions for some tourist-area businesses. Expect hotel restaurants, a few attractions and the casinos to carry the day, and book dinner before you arrive.
The lights, both nights
The Winter Festival of Lights runs from November 14, 2026 to January 10, 2027, lit nightly from 5 p.m. to midnight, holidays included, and it is free. The route stretches more than 8 km along the Niagara Parkway, through Fallsview and along Lundy's Lane, with donations collected at Dufferin Islands. Full details are on the festival's own site.
The driving section around Dufferin Islands is where a car helps most on a cold night. Our Dufferin Islands drive-through post explains the route and timing. In 2025, Niagara Parks also ran nightly holiday fireworks from December 25 and free laser light shows from December 26 in Queen Victoria Park; look for the 2026 version in its holiday release.

Boxing Day: the shopping day
December 26 turns the region into a shopping trip. Three outlet centres are within reach of the Fallsview hotels:
- Canada One Outlets, 7500 Lundy's Lane, about 4.5 km from Fallsview, roughly 10 minutes.
- Outlet Collection at Niagara, 300 Taylor Road in Niagara-on-the-Lake, about 14 km, usually 15–20 minutes. Its holiday hours vary from its regular schedule, so check the day before.
- Fashion Outlets of Niagara Falls USA, 1900 Military Road on the New York side, about 9.5 km from Fallsview plus the border crossing.
The US outlet is the one that needs planning. Every passenger needs valid documents to enter the US and to return to Canada, and Boxing Day is a holiday on the Canadian side only, so bridge traffic can be heavy in both directions. The closest crossing to the Fallsview hotels is the Rainbow Bridge. Read our guide to a shopping day at Fashion Outlets of Niagara Falls USA before you go. On the way home, the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) treats same-day shoppers differently from longer trips: personal exemptions do not apply to same-day cross-border shopping.
One more holiday detail. In 2025, the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission waived tolls for 24 hours around Christmas at the Rainbow, Whirlpool Rapids and Lewiston-Queenston bridges, starting at 11:30 p.m. Whether it repeats in 2026 will be posted on the bridge commission's news page.
Getting there when transit slows down
GO Transit runs a Saturday schedule on Christmas Day 2026, Boxing Day 2026 and the observed Boxing Day holiday on Monday, December 28, according to its holiday schedules page. GO also warns that some routes have no weekend service at all, so check the Niagara line itself. Our train and bus guide covers the station transfers at the other end.
| Mode | Door-to-door time from Pearson | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private chauffeur | About 1 h 20 – 1 h 40 off-peak, door to hotel door | Fixed fare via booker, shown before you pay | Suitcases, gifts, car seats | Families, late flights, holiday-day arrivals |
| Rideshare | Similar driving time if a car accepts | Surge pricing likely on holidays | Limited trunk space | Solo travellers with a carry-on |
| Taxi | Similar driving time | Metered | Limited | Short local rides once you are in town |
| GO train or bus | Longer, with a transfer at Union or a connection at Niagara Falls station | GO fare; holiday Saturday schedule | Carry-on manageable | Budget travellers on Boxing Day morning |
| Intercity coach | About 1 h 30+ on the road, plus waiting | FlixBus fares from $20.98 (as of 2026) | One bag | Students, solo trips |
| Driving yourself | 1 h 20 – 1 h 40 plus parking | Fuel and hotel parking | Whatever fits | Locals with winter tires and patience |
When is the train or bus the better choice? If you are a solo traveller with one bag, staying in a hotel close to Niagara Falls station, and arriving on Boxing Day morning, the GO train is sensible and the scenery along the lake is a bonus. When does a pre-booked car win? When the plane lands late on Christmas Eve, when the family has three suitcases, a stroller and a toddler seat, or when you want to be collected at the hotel at 7 p.m. for the lights and brought back at 9 p.m. A comparison of chauffeur, taxi and rideshare has more on that trade-off.
Booking it with NiagaraFallsLimo.net in 3 steps
- Set the trip. Enter your pickup (airport terminal, Union Station, home or hotel) and drop-off, with date and time and your flight number. We track flights, so a delayed holiday arrival is not a problem.
- Pick the vehicle. A Standard Sedan seats up to three with two large bags; a Standard SUV seats up to six with six bags, which suits a family with presents; an Executive Sprinter takes up to 12 for an extended family.
- Add the details. Passengers, bags, child seats, meet and greet, then pay securely; confirmation comes by email. Book early for December 24–26, and note that holiday dates can carry a cancellation deadline different from our usual 72-hour rule, printed on your confirmation.
Who this suits
Individuals escaping a quiet city Christmas can stay at a Fallsview hotel and walk the brink without crowds. Couples often book a lights tour on Christmas night and a late dinner. Families get the most from a car: grandparents, car seats, gifts and a holiday when the visitor buses rest. Our families page covers child seats and pacing. Groups of relatives arriving from different cities can share an Executive Sprinter from Pearson. For hotel choices, start with our Fallsview hotels guide.
If you are staying through the week, our post on New Year's Eve in Niagara Falls covers the busiest night of the season.
Frequently asked questions
Are the Niagara Falls lit up on Christmas Day?
Yes. The Falls are illuminated every night of the year. From November 1 to December 31 the lights run from 4:30 p.m. to 2 a.m., so Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day all have the full evening display. Special colour shows run on some dates; Niagara Parks posts them on its illumination calendar.
Does the WEGO bus run on Christmas Day?
It did not in 2025. Niagara Parks announced that WEGO service would not operate on December 25, while several attractions opened on modified hours. Check the 2026 holiday release, usually published a few days before Christmas. Without WEGO, a taxi, rideshare or pre-booked car is the way around beyond walking distance.
Are there fireworks over Niagara Falls at Christmas?
Yes. The Winter Festival of Lights schedules fireworks at 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays from November 14, then nightly from December 18 to January 2, weather permitting, which covers Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. On New Year's Eve there is also a display at midnight. Check the festival site on the day in case of wind.
Are stores open on Boxing Day near Niagara Falls?
Boxing Day is a public holiday in Ontario, but it is also a traditional shopping day. Holiday hours vary from regular schedules, so check Canada One Outlets, the Outlet Collection at Niagara or Fashion Outlets of Niagara Falls USA the day before you go.
Do GO trains run to Niagara Falls on Christmas Day?
GO Transit runs a Saturday schedule on Christmas Day and Boxing Day 2026. GO notes that some routes do not offer weekend service, so confirm the Niagara line's holiday timetable on gotransit.com before relying on it. A pre-booked car runs to your exact pickup time regardless of the holiday timetable.
How far in advance should I book a car for Christmas?
As early as your plans are fixed. Holiday dates fill early, and the fare you see in the booker is fixed at booking. Remember that our standard cancellation terms count from the scheduled pickup, and holiday bookings may carry a different deadline shown on your confirmation.
How much is a car from Pearson to Niagara Falls on Christmas Day?
The booker shows the fixed all-in fare for your exact pickup, drop-off and vehicle before you pay. It does not surge on holidays, which is the main difference from on-demand rides on December 24–26. Enter your flight number and we track it, so a late landing does not change the plan.
