For people who live in southern Ontario, the long weekend in May has a particular feeling. Cottages open, garden centres fill up, and the first families of the year pack the car for Niagara. Ask the porters at the Fallsview hotels and they will tell you the same thing: the Friday before Victoria Day in Niagara Falls is when the season starts for real.

This post walks through what the weekend actually looks like on the ground: which attractions are running, when the fireworks start, which roads close at night, how long the drive from Toronto or Pearson takes when everyone leaves at once, and where a pre-booked car from NiagaraFallsLimo.net can pick you up when the Parkway is shut.

What is Victoria Day weekend like in Niagara Falls?

Victoria Day weekend is the start of Niagara's busy season: nightly fireworks, boats and outdoor attractions open, and evening road closures by the Falls. NiagaraFallsLimo.net drives Toronto to Niagara Falls, about 125–130 km (78–81 mi), usually 1 h 30–1 h 45 off-peak. Book online; the fixed fare shows before you pay.

Victoria Day itself falls on the Monday before May 25; our Niagara Falls events calendar lists the other big dates of the year. The next one is Monday, May 24, 2027, which makes Saturday the 22nd and Sunday the 23rd the busy nights. In Canada it is a statutory holiday in most provinces, so the whole of the Greater Toronto Area has the same three days off, and a good share of them drive the QEW.

The weather is usually mild rather than hot and the attractions that close in winter are back. It is also crowded in a way the Falls has not been since October, and the evening traffic surprises many first-time visitors.

What is open by the May long weekend

By late May the seasonal attractions on the Canadian side are running. Niagara Parks lists its cruise, the Whirlpool Aero Car and the White Water Walk as April to November attractions, and Old Fort Erie and the Laura Secord Homestead as May to October. The year-round attractions, including Journey Behind the Falls and the Butterfly Conservatory, carry on as usual.

  • Niagara City Cruises. The official Niagara Parks boat tour leaves from the dock at 5920 Niagara Parkway, below Clifton Hill. Tickets are timed, so book a slot before you arrive. Our Niagara City Cruises page covers the drop-off point and how long to allow.
  • Maid of the Mist. The US-side boat opened its 2026 season on April 24, according to the Maid of the Mist schedule page. Crossing to ride it means a passport or other valid document for every passenger.
  • Old Fort Erie. A War of 1812 site at the south end of the Parkway, open May to October; the Niagara Parks Old Fort Erie page lists current days and hours.
  • Wine country. Tasting rooms in Niagara-on-the-Lake run normal spring hours, and the Wineries of Niagara-on-the-Lake run a May program called Sip & Sizzle.

The fireworks return, and so do the night closures

The Niagara Falls fireworks are the anchor of the season. In 2026 the nightly series ran from Friday, May 15 to Monday, October 12, starting at 10:00 pm, which meant the first show of the year landed on the Friday of the Victoria Day long weekend. The Niagara Parks fireworks page recommends Queen Victoria Park as the best viewing area and notes that strong winds can cancel a show. The 2027 dates had not been published when we checked, so confirm them in spring.

The illumination comes first. From May 15 to July 31 the Falls are lit from 8:30 pm, so a typical May evening is dinner, the lights coming up as dusk settles, then fireworks at ten. Our fireworks and illumination guide explains the viewing spots in more detail.

On the busiest nights, Niagara Parks and the City of Niagara Falls close roads near the Falls. Their 2026 plan, announced on May 15, closed the Niagara Parkway between Clifton Hill and Fraser Hill to all vehicles from 7 pm, with a full closure by 8 pm, reopening around 1 am. On the Victoria Day weekend the closure ran Saturday and Sunday, and on the Sunday Clifton Hill itself was also closed to cars between Victoria Avenue and Falls Avenue. The road closure announcement says the plan is at police discretion and can change with weather or crowds.

On closure nights, nobody can drive you to the railing at Table Rock after 8 pm. Plan to be dropped before the closure, or at the top of the escarpment and walk or ride the Falls Incline Railway, which Niagara Parks keeps running until 1 am on those nights.

Where a car can meet you when the Parkway is closed

This is where a little local knowledge pays off. On closure evenings, the chauffeur works from the streets above the gorge rather than the river road:

  1. Fallsview Boulevard hotels. If you are staying in Fallsview, you can walk down to Queen Victoria Park and back. A car is only needed if you are going somewhere else afterwards.
  2. Upper Clifton Hill and Victoria Avenue. For guests staying outside the core, we set a pickup on Victoria Avenue or a side street above Clifton Hill, agreed in advance, and send the exact corner by message.
  3. The top of the Incline. The Falls Incline Railway links Table Rock with the Fallsview area. Riding it up after the fireworks and meeting the car at the top avoids the crush at the river level.

The return is slower than the arrival. After the 10 pm show, thousands of people leave at once, and the hour after the fireworks is the slowest of the day on Stanley Avenue and Lundy's Lane. If you are heading back to Toronto that night, expect a slow first twenty minutes.

Getting there: the holiday Friday and the Monday return

Toronto to Niagara Falls is about 125–130 km (78–81 mi). Off-peak it usually takes 1 h 30 to 1 h 45 by the QEW. Toronto Pearson to the Fallsview hotels is about 121 km (75 mi), roughly 1 h 35 on a clear road. Our Toronto to Niagara Falls route page has the step-by-step version.

On the long weekend, the profile changes:

  • Friday afternoon is the heaviest southbound period. Leaving Toronto after lunch on the Friday of the long weekend means sharing the QEW with everyone else heading to Niagara and beyond, so allow 2 hours or more, and longer if there is an incident on the Burlington Skyway.
  • Monday afternoon is the mirror image of Friday, heading north. Families who can leave by late morning, or wait until after dinner, generally have a calmer trip.

The GO train is a genuine option this weekend. Niagara Parks' 2026 release pointed GTA visitors to the daily Niagara GO train, which connects with WEGO buses at the Niagara Falls station. If you are travelling light, the train avoids the QEW entirely. It gets harder with a pram, car seats or three nights of luggage.

Memorial Day follows a week later

One quirk of the calendar: Victoria Day and the US Memorial Day are usually a week apart, so Niagara gets two holiday weekends in a row. In 2026, Niagara Parks closed the Parkway at night on both. The second weekend brings more American visitors and, for anyone crossing the bridges, more traffic at the border. CBSA has said that holiday long weekends are among the busiest periods at the land crossings, and early mornings are usually best.

If your plans include the US side, every passenger needs their own valid documents, and the chauffeur crosses the bridge with you. We cannot promise how long a crossing will take, so the desk builds slack around it. Our border wait times page shows where to check live times before you go.

A sample long weekend for a family of five

Here is how one realistic plan looks for a family arriving from Toronto with three children, staying two nights in Fallsview:

  1. Saturday, 8:30 am. Pickup at home in Toronto in a Standard SUV with two booster seats added in the booker. Arrival at the hotel around 10:15, bags dropped with the bell desk.
  2. Saturday, late morning. Short drop at the cruise dock on the Parkway, with a timed boat ticket booked ahead. The chauffeur waits nearby or comes back at an agreed time if you booked by the hour.
  3. Saturday afternoon. Free time on foot in Queen Victoria Park and the Butterfly Conservatory, a short drive north along the Parkway if you add it to the booking.
  4. Saturday, 10 pm. Fireworks from Queen Victoria Park, walking from the hotel. No car needed.
  5. Sunday. A Parkway drive north to the Floral Clock, about 10 km (6 mi) and 15 minutes from Fallsview, then lunch in Niagara-on-the-Lake.
  6. Monday, 11 am. Return to Toronto before the afternoon rush.

Booking it with NiagaraFallsLimo.net in 3 steps

  1. Set the trip. Enter your Toronto address, Pearson terminal or hotel as the pickup, your Niagara hotel as the drop-off, and the date and time. Add a return trip for Monday, or choose "By the hour" for a day of stops.
  2. Pick the vehicle. Every class shows its fixed fare for your exact trip: a sedan for up to three, an SUV for up to six with luggage, an Executive Sprinter for up to twelve.
  3. Add the details and pay. Passengers, bags, child seats, meet and greet at the airport, and any notes about closure-night pickups. Pay securely; confirmation arrives by email.

Holiday weekends book up, so earlier is better. Before you start, our how-to-book guide lists the details worth having to hand for a holiday booking. Note the cancellation terms on your confirmation, since long weekends may carry a different deadline.

The honest verdict: for a couple with backpacks staying near Clifton Hill, the GO train and walking is simple and inexpensive, and a taxi or rideshare is fine for a one-off trip across town. On closure nights, though, rideshare demand spikes after the fireworks and pickups are restricted near the river, which is when waits get long. A pre-booked car makes the most sense for the drive in and out, for airport arrivals, for families with car seats, and for anyone planning a Saturday in wine country. The long-weekend maths is laid out side by side in our chauffeur vs taxi vs rideshare comparison.

Who this weekend suits

Individuals and couples who enjoy a lively atmosphere will like the energy of the first fireworks night, and a couple can make the Sunday a quiet winery day. Families get the most from it: the weather is kind to children, the attractions are open, and our families page covers seats and vehicle sizes. Groups celebrating a birthday or a reunion should book a larger vehicle early, because Sprinters and SUVs go first on long weekends. If crowds are the thing you want to avoid, our post on weekdays versus weekends at the Falls may suit you better, and the companion post on the Niagara fireworks schedule covers every fireworks night of the year.

Frequently asked questions

When is Victoria Day weekend in 2027?

Victoria Day is the Monday before May 25, so in 2027 it falls on Monday, May 24. The long weekend runs Saturday, May 22 to Monday, May 24, with Friday evening the busiest time to drive south from Toronto.

Are there fireworks at Niagara Falls on Victoria Day weekend?

In 2026 the nightly 10 pm fireworks series began on Friday, May 15, the start of the Victoria Day long weekend, and ran until October 12. Niagara Parks publishes each year's dates in spring, and strong winds can cancel a show on the night.

Which roads close in Niagara Falls on the May long weekend?

In 2026 the Niagara Parkway between Clifton Hill and Fraser Hill closed to vehicles from 7 pm, fully by 8 pm, until about 1 am on the Saturday and Sunday. Clifton Hill also closed to cars on the Sunday. Plans are confirmed each year and can change.

Is the Maid of the Mist open for Victoria Day?

In 2026 the Maid of the Mist opened on April 24, so it was running by the May long weekend. The start date shifts with Lake Erie ice each spring. It leaves from the US side, so every passenger needs a valid passport or other accepted document.

How long does it take to get from Toronto to Niagara Falls on the long weekend?

Toronto to Niagara Falls is about 125–130 km (78–81 mi), usually 1 h 30 to 1 h 45 off-peak. On the Friday afternoon of the long weekend, allow 2 hours or more. Early Saturday departures are usually close to normal.

Can the limo drop us right at the fireworks?

Before about 7 pm, yes, along the Parkway. Once the closure starts, cars cannot reach the river road, so the chauffeur meets you above the gorge on a pre-agreed street or at the top of the Falls Incline Railway.

Can we celebrate with a drink in the car on the way?

No. Drinking is not allowed in any of our vehicles, and Niagara Region's vehicle-for-hire by-law bars drivers from permitting it. Toast the start of summer on a patio instead, and let the chauffeur handle the drive home.
