People in Buffalo, Amherst and the Southtowns tend to treat the Canadian Falls as a place to take visiting relatives. Seen from the other side, it is a ready-made weekend: hotel rooms that look straight at the Horseshoe Falls, a wine region twenty minutes north, a theatre festival, and restaurants with a view nobody in Western New York gets at home. The friction is the border and the parking, and both shrink if somebody else does the driving.

This is a two-night plan for couples, built around one simple rule: cross once on Friday, once on Sunday, and do not touch a steering wheel in between.

How far is Niagara Falls, Canada, from Buffalo for a weekend?

From downtown Buffalo, the Fallsview hotels in Niagara Falls, Ontario, are about 34 km (21 mi) away, usually 30 to 45 minutes by car plus the border queue. NiagaraFallsLimo.net picks you up at home or the office, crosses with you, and shows the fixed all-in fare in its online booker before you pay.

From Amherst or Williamsville the drive is similar, using I-290 and I-190 to the Lewiston-Queenston or Rainbow Bridge. From South Buffalo or Orchard Park, the Peace Bridge and the QEW are the usual line. Your chauffeur checks the border wait-time feeds before leaving and chooses the bridge accordingly; we never promise a crossing time, because nobody can.

Why cross once and leave the car at home

The case for a chauffeur on a weekend this short is not really about distance. It is about what happens once you arrive.

  • The bridge. Tolls are collected only when entering Canada: US$6.00 for a car at the Rainbow, Whirlpool Rapids and Lewiston-Queenston bridges, or US$8.00 by card at the cashless Peace Bridge (as of 2026). Not having to think about it is a small luxury.
  • The parking. Fallsview hotels sit on a ridge above the Falls, and a car you bring mostly sits in the hotel garage all weekend. Most of the walking happens between the hotel, the Falls Incline Railway and Table Rock.
  • Dinner and wine. If Saturday includes a winery or two and a long dinner, neither of you should be driving. With a chauffeur, nobody has to.
  • Sunday afternoon. The queue home at the bridge is somebody else's problem.

The arrangement is simple: one booking to cross on Friday, one booking on Saturday for wine country or dinner, one booking home on Sunday. Our Buffalo to Niagara Falls, Canada route page has the reference times, and the Peace Bridge page explains that crossing in detail.

Friday: the pickup and the bridge

Leave after work, around 5:00 or 5:30 p.m. Canada's border agency names holiday long weekends as the busiest periods, so if your weekend is a long one, an earlier start helps. Have your documents in hand before you reach the booth: US citizens can enter Canada with a passport, and Canada's border agency recommends one, though other proof of citizenship such as an enhanced driver's licence is accepted. A NEXUS card works only if everyone in the car, including the chauffeur, is a NEXUS member, so plan on the general lanes.

Check in, then walk to the falls after dark. The Falls are illuminated every night of the year, and from the Fallsview area the Incline Railway drops you to Table Rock in a couple of minutes.

Where to stay for two nights

Fallsview is the classic choice: the Niagara Falls Marriott Fallsview Hotel & Spa, the Hilton Niagara Falls/Fallsview, the Hyatt Regency Niagara Falls Fallsview (until April 2026 the Embassy Suites) and the Fallsview Casino Resort hotel all stand above the Horseshoe Falls. Ask for a falls-view room in writing. Our Fallsview hotels guide lists them with their current names.

Falls Avenue, at the foot of Clifton Hill, is livelier: the Sheraton Fallsview Hotel and The Brock Niagara Falls-Fallsview, Tapestry Collection by Hilton, both connect indoors to Casino Niagara.

Niagara-on-the-Lake is the quieter alternative, about 23 km (15 mi) north along the river. The Prince of Wales, Queen's Landing and Pillar and Post put you in the Old Town, walking distance from restaurants and the Shaw Festival. Couples who have "done" the Falls before often prefer it, and come back to the Falls for one evening.

Saturday: pick one big thing

The mistake on a two-night weekend is trying to do the Falls, wine country, the theatre and the spa in one day. Pick one anchor and let the rest fit around it.

Wine country by chauffeur. Niagara-on-the-Lake's estates are mostly along Niagara Stone Road, John Street East and the Niagara Parkway. A morning of two or three tastings, lunch at a winery restaurant, back to the hotel by mid-afternoon. Trius Winery Restaurant says it has been the town's only MICHELIN Guide-recommended restaurant for three years; reserve ahead. Book the day in "By the hour" mode so the car waits between stops, and remember that our vehicles carry no open alcohol: what you buy travels sealed.

The Shaw Festival. The 2026 season runs to December 23 in Niagara-on-the-Lake, with holiday productions in November and December. A matinee plus an early dinner in the Old Town makes a complete Saturday.

The Falls themselves. If you have not done them in years: Journey Behind the Falls, the Niagara Parks Power Station tunnel, and the Whirlpool Aero Car in season (April to November).

Icewine in January. The Niagara Icewine Festival's Icewine Village takes over Queen Street in Niagara-on-the-Lake over two January weekends, with fire pits and ice carving. The organizers announce each winter's dates on their site; book a room once they are out.

Saturday night: lights, dinner, a view

From November 14, 2026 to January 10, 2027, the Winter Festival of Lights runs nightly from 5:00 p.m. to midnight along more than 8 km of the Parkway, Fallsview and Lundy's Lane, with fireworks at 8:00 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays from November 14, then nightly from December 18 to January 2. It is free. A slow chauffeured drive along the illuminated Parkway is one of the few things on this list that genuinely needs a car; our Winter Festival of Lights page has the route.

For dinner with a view, the Skylon Tower's Revolving Dining Room turns a full circle every hour, 775 ft above the Falls, and recommends reservations. Table Rock House, run by Niagara Parks, calls itself the closest you can dine to the Horseshoe Falls. In summer, the Falls fireworks usually run at 10:00 p.m. nightly from mid-May to mid-October.

Sunday: a slow morning and the ride home

Breakfast late, a walk along the river, and a pickup after checkout. A noon-to-2:00 p.m. departure usually avoids the worst of the Sunday-evening queue heading into the US. No toll is charged entering the United States at any of the Niagara bridges.

At the US booth, declare what you bought. Two nights away matters here: CBP's personal exemption for returning residents is US$800 after at least 48 hours outside the country, including up to one litre of alcohol for travellers aged 21 or older, according to CBP's customs duty page. Under 48 hours, the exemption falls to US$200, with only 150 ml of alcohol. A Friday-evening to Sunday-afternoon weekend can fall just short of 48 hours, so if that case of icewine matters, leave a little later. Our duty-free and declarations page explains both sides of the border.

The honest verdict. If you plan to stay put at your Fallsview hotel all weekend and never drink at dinner, driving your own car is perfectly sensible; the distance is short. A chauffeur earns its place when the weekend includes wine country, a theatre evening or the lights drive, and when you would rather not spend Sunday afternoon in a border queue at the wheel. Rideshare is the weakest option here, because so much depends on whether a driver will cross. Our cross-border car service is built for exactly this.

Who this weekend suits

It is written for couples: anniversaries, birthdays, a weekend away from the kids. It works for individuals too, usually someone meeting a partner who is flying in from elsewhere. Families with young children will prefer a Falls Avenue hotel near the waterpark and a shorter Saturday. Groups of friends can scale it up in a Standard SUV for six or an Executive Sprinter for up to twelve. More ideas for two are on our couples page.

For the pickup details from specific neighbourhoods, see our posts on Amherst and Williamsville pickups and downtown Buffalo hotels to the Canadian Falls.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to get from Buffalo to Niagara Falls, Canada?

From downtown Buffalo, about 30 to 45 minutes of driving to the Fallsview hotels, roughly 34 km (21 mi), plus whatever queue is at the bridge. From Amherst or the airport area the drive is about 40 to 45 minutes before the border.

Which bridge is best from Buffalo?

From downtown and South Buffalo, the Peace Bridge and the QEW are usually quickest. From Amherst, Williamsville and the northern suburbs, the Rainbow or Lewiston-Queenston bridges via I-290 and I-190 make sense. The chauffeur checks live wait times before choosing.

Do I need a passport for a weekend in Niagara Falls, Canada?

US citizens can use other documents, such as an enhanced driver's licence or a NEXUS card, but Canada's border agency recommends a passport. Returning to the US by land, US citizens can show a passport, passport card, enhanced driver's licence or trusted-traveller card.

How much wine can I bring back to Buffalo?

After at least 48 hours in Canada, returning US residents aged 21 or older can include one litre of alcohol in their US$800 exemption. Under 48 hours, the allowance is 150 ml within a US$200 exemption. New York State limits may also apply; declare everything.

Can we drink champagne in the car on the way?

No. There is no drinking in our vehicles, on either side of the border. A sealed bottle can be added in the booker as a gift to open at the hotel.

What is there to do in Niagara Falls in November?

The Winter Festival of Lights starts on November 14, 2026, with fireworks at 8:00 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays from November 14, then nightly from December 18 to January 2 The Shaw Festival's holiday shows run in Niagara-on-the-Lake, the wineries are open, and indoor attractions such as Journey Behind the Falls and the Butterfly Conservatory run year-round.

Can the chauffeur wait while we have dinner?

Yes, if you book the evening in the booker's "By the hour" mode. The car and chauffeur stay with you between the hotel, the restaurant and a drive along the illuminated Parkway, and the fixed fare covers the hours you select. For a simple ride to dinner and back, two point-to-point trips also work.

Is it worth staying in Niagara-on-the-Lake instead of Fallsview?

For couples who want quiet evenings, theatre and wineries within walking or short-ride distance, yes. For the view of the Falls from the room, Fallsview wins. Many couples split it: one night in each.
