Most visitors reach Niagara Falls from the north, along the QEW from Toronto, and never see the southern half of the peninsula. Port Colborne is the other way in. It sits on Lake Erie at the southern end of the Welland Canal, where lake freighters and, from spring to autumn, small expedition cruise ships tie up a few minutes' walk from the main street. From Port Colborne to Niagara Falls is a short ride, and with one stop at the canal's busiest viewing point it becomes a half-day that most couples remember longer than the tower views.

NiagaraFallsLimo.net books this as either a straight transfer or a "By the hour" chauffeur who stays with you, waits at each stop and drops you at the Falls or back at the dock.

Can you see the Welland Canal and Niagara Falls in one afternoon?

Yes. Port Colborne to Niagara Falls is about 33 km (20 mi), 30–40 minutes direct. Adding the Lock 3 viewing platform in St. Catharines makes a loop of roughly 52 km (32 mi) and about an hour of driving, so four to five hours covers both. NiagaraFallsLimo.net books it by the hour; the booker shows the fixed fare first.

The driving is the easy part. What decides the shape of your afternoon is the ship schedule, which nobody can promise more than about a day ahead, and the season, because the canal closes every winter.

The afternoon at a glance

Here is one workable order, starting from downtown Port Colborne at about 1 p.m.

LegDistanceTypical driveWhat you do there
Downtown Port Colborne to the Lock 8 areaa few minutes in townunder 10 minWatch the southern control lock and the Lake Erie approach
Port Colborne to Lock 3, St. Catharinesabout 33–35 km (21 mi)30–40 minViewing platform, museum, a ship if one is scheduled
Lock 3 to the Falls (Table Rock)about 17 km (11 mi)20–25 minHorseshoe Falls, dinner, evening illumination
Falls back to Port Colborne (optional)about 33 km (20 mi)30–40 minReturn to your hotel or ship

Reverse it if a ship is due at Lock 3 early and your evening is free in Port Colborne. The chauffeur can adjust the order on the day as long as the total time fits your booking.

Price a canal half-day

Starting at the Lake Erie end

The Welland Canal is 23.5 nautical miles long and has eight locks linking Lake Ontario and Lake Erie, according to the Great Lakes St. Lawrence Seaway. Seven of them sit at the northern end, climbing the escarpment above St. Catharines and Thorold. The eighth, Lock 8, is a control lock in Port Colborne at the southern end, where the canal meets Lake Erie.

That geography explains why Port Colborne feels so different from the Falls. The land is flat, the lake is right there, and ships move slowly through the middle of town. Lock 8 Gateway Park, beside the lock, is the natural first stop: a short walk, room to stand by the water, and in the shipping season a decent chance of a laker easing past. Your chauffeur drops you at the park, waits nearby and picks you up when you are ready.

If you have time before leaving town, the city runs resident-led walking tours for cruise visitors that include a stroll along the canal and across the lift bridge. Couples staying overnight sometimes do the walk in the morning and the chauffeured half-day after lunch.

Reading the ship schedule

Nobody can guarantee you a ship at a particular lock at a particular minute. The St. Catharines Museum and Welland Canals Centre notes that the lock schedule is managed by the Seaway corporation, can change without notice, and that ships are usually added no more than 24 hours before arrival. A lockage takes about 20 minutes.

What that means for planning:

  • Check the day before, and again that morning. If a ship is due at Lock 3 mid-afternoon, run the loop in the order above. If the morning looks busier, flip it.
  • Do not plan around one specific vessel. Plan around a window and treat a ship as a bonus.
  • Mind the season. The canal closes for annual maintenance from the first week of January to mid-March. Outside that window, ship traffic runs through spring, summer and autumn.

Booking "By the hour" gives you the slack to wait twenty minutes for a ship without watching a meter. See the hourly chauffeur service for how that mode works.

Lock 3: the viewing platform

The St. Catharines Museum and Welland Canals Centre at 1932 Welland Canals Parkway has a viewing platform over Lock 3, admission by donation, and is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, staying open until 8 p.m. on Tuesdays to Thursdays in July and August. It closes on Good Friday, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day.

From the platform, a ship fills the lock almost to the edges. Watching the water lift an ocean-going freighter is a strange, quiet thing to do on a holiday, and it suits couples who prefer something slower than Clifton Hill. Our page on the Welland Canals Centre covers parking and drop-off for chauffeured cars.

Finishing at the Falls

From Lock 3 the drive south to the Falls is about 17 km (11 mi), 20–25 minutes. The chauffeur can drop you at Table Rock Centre, right at the brink of the Horseshoe Falls, which is the logical final stop because it gathers the main sights in one place.

Two ways to end the day:

  • Under the falls. Journey Behind the Falls takes you down into tunnels to portals and an observation deck at the foot of the Horseshoe Falls. It is open year-round, so it works in shoulder seasons when the boats are not running.
  • Dinner and the lights. Table Rock House Restaurant sits at the brink, and the Skylon Tower's Revolving Dining Room turns 360 degrees once an hour, 775 ft above the Falls. The Falls are illuminated every night of the year; on fireworks nights in the warmer months, a 10 p.m. show follows.

Your chauffeur can wait through dinner and drive you back to Port Colborne, or simply drop you at your Falls hotel. If you would rather have someone design the whole route, our Niagara Falls private tour is built around exactly this kind of flexible day.

Cruise passengers docking at Port Colborne

Port Colborne has become a regular call for Great Lakes expedition ships. The City of Port Colborne expects 66 cruise ship visits in 2026, from mid-April through the end of October, from Viking, Victory Cruise Lines, Pearl Seas Cruises and Ponant. The city says ships dock right downtown.

Many passengers take the ship's own excursions, and that is a reasonable choice: the ship organises everything and will not leave without you. A private car is the better fit when you want a different pace, a smaller group than a coach, or a stop the shore programme does not include.

If you book privately, protect the all-aboard time:

  1. Give us your ship name, the docking date and the all-aboard time when booking.
  2. Plan to be back at the wharf with a comfortable buffer. We build the loop backwards from that time, not forwards from lunch.
  3. Carry the ship card and photo ID the cruise line requires. This loop stays in Canada, so no border crossing is involved.

Our cruise transfers page explains dock pickups across the region, and our post on Great Lakes cruise stops at Port Colborne and the Welland Canal goes deeper on shore-day planning.

Booking it with NiagaraFallsLimo.net in 3 steps

  1. Open the online booker, choose "By the hour" and enter your start point. A Port Colborne hotel, a home address or the cruise wharf, with the date and start time. Add Lock 3 and the Falls in the notes, or list them as stops in a multi-stop trip.
  2. Pick the car. For two people, a Standard Sedan (up to 3) or a Mercedes-Benz E or S-Class (up to 2) is the usual choice. Each class shows its fixed fare before you commit.
  3. Add details and pay. Ship name and all-aboard time if you are cruising, any mobility needs, a child seat if you are bringing one. Pay securely; confirmation comes by email. Our guide on how to book a limo walks through each screen.

The honest verdict. For a single hop from Port Colborne to the Falls, a taxi or rideshare will get you there. The trouble starts when you want to stop: at Lock 8, at Lock 3, waiting on a ship that might be twenty minutes late. You would be ordering three or four separate rides and hoping each one turns up promptly in a quiet part of the peninsula. A chauffeur who waits at every stop turns that into one booking with no gaps, which matters most to cruise passengers with an all-aboard time.

Who this suits

Couples are the natural fit: an unhurried afternoon, a ship rising in a lock, dinner at the brink of the Horseshoe Falls. Individuals interested in engineering or maritime history get far more from Lock 3 than from a bus window. Families with older children often enjoy the canal more than they expect, and the booker adds child seats for younger ones. Small groups of up to six travel comfortably in a Standard SUV or Executive Black SUV. Guests staying in Welland can add this loop to a weekend; see our Welland to Niagara Falls guide, and for the river route south of the Falls, Fort Erie along the Niagara Parkway. Our page for couples has more date ideas, and the routes hub lists other pairings.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Port Colborne from Niagara Falls?

About 33 km (20 mi) from downtown Port Colborne to the Fallsview area, usually 30–40 minutes. Adding a stop at Lock 3 in St. Catharines turns it into a loop of roughly 52 km and about an hour of driving in total, before time spent at each stop.

Will I definitely see a ship go through a lock?

No one can promise it. Ships are usually scheduled no more than about 24 hours ahead and times can change. A lockage takes about 20 minutes, so a flexible "By the hour" booking gives you the best odds: check the schedule that morning and order the stops around it.

When is the Welland Canal closed?

The canal closes for annual winter maintenance from the first week of January to mid-March, according to the Welland Canals Centre. The museum itself stays open year-round except on a few holidays. Outside the closure, ships use the canal through spring, summer and autumn.

Can you pick us up at the cruise ship in Port Colborne?

Yes. Give us the ship name, docking date and all-aboard time when booking, and we plan the loop backwards from your return time. The city says ships dock right downtown; your confirmation will show where the chauffeur meets you.

Is a half-day enough for the canal and the Falls?

Four to five hours covers a Lock 8 stop, Lock 3 and a couple of hours at Table Rock comfortably. If you want dinner and the evening illumination at the Falls, book six hours or ask the chauffeur to drop you at your hotel instead of driving back.

Do we need passports for this trip?

Not for this loop, which stays in Ontario. Carry the photo ID your cruise line or hotel asks for. If you decide to add the American side of the Falls, every passenger needs their own valid documents for the crossing; see documents for entering the USA.
