Here is a Hamilton to Niagara Falls trip many people know too well. A bus to the station, a train toward Burlington or a GO bus along the QEW, a change, a wait, then an arrival at Niagara Falls GO on Bridge Street, still 4 km from the Falls, wondering how to cover the last stretch with a suitcase. None of it is terrible. All of it takes time. NiagaraFallsLimo.net offers the other version: a car at your Hamilton door, the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW) along the lake, and a drop-off at your hotel entrance in under an hour from most of the lower city. This post is honest about when each version makes sense.
What is the quickest way from Hamilton to Niagara Falls?
A direct car is quickest door to door. Downtown Hamilton to Niagara Falls, Ontario is about 73 km (46 mi), usually 1 h – 1 h 10 off-peak; Stoney Creek is about 64 km (40 mi), around 50 minutes. NiagaraFallsLimo.net picks you up at home and shows a fixed fare in its online booker before you pay.
From Westdale and McMaster University the drive is longer, about 89 km (55 mi), because the quickest route usually runs out to Highway 403 and around through Burlington, so plan on 1 h 10 – 1 h 20. From the Mountain, the Lincoln Alexander and Red Hill Valley parkways bring you down to the QEW in Stoney Creek, and the time sits between the two.
The GO options from Hamilton, honestly
Transit between Hamilton and Niagara improved in late 2025, and it is fair to say so.
- Confederation GO, Stoney Creek. This station at the QEW and Centennial Parkway opened on 27 October 2025. Metrolinx said at the opening that every existing Lakeshore West trip serving Niagara Falls stops there. If you live near it, you have a direct train to Niagara Falls GO with no change.
- West Harbour GO, north end. On the Lakeshore West line; Metrolinx says select trips to and from West Harbour also serve Confederation. Check which ones continue to Niagara.
- Hamilton GO Centre, downtown. Mainly a bus terminal on Hunter Street East. From here, many trips to Niagara involve a bus or train to Burlington and then the GO route 12 bus, which is timed to meet trains and runs along the QEW with stops at Grimsby, Beamsville and St. Catharines.
- Weekends. GO increased weekend Niagara Falls service from 1 November 2025.
This is the "GO bus transfer" in the title. If you start near Confederation, you can skip it on the train. If you start in Westdale, Ancaster or on the Mountain, the trip usually means getting to a station first, then possibly a change, then a ride from the Niagara end.
The Confederation GO station page lists the platform and pick-up and drop-off area, which is useful if someone is dropping you at the train.
Where a direct car wins
Westdale and McMaster. The furthest Hamilton start from the Falls and the one with the most awkward transit. A car from your door saves the cross-city leg entirely.
The Mountain (Upper James, Upper Wellington, Ancaster). No train station up the escarpment. The chauffeur takes the Lincoln Alexander Parkway east to the Red Hill Valley Parkway and down to the QEW.
Downtown and Corktown. About 73 km to Fallsview. The car avoids the Hamilton GO Centre bus connection and drops you at your hotel instead of a station 4 km away.
Stoney Creek. About 64 km, roughly 50 minutes. The train from Confederation is a real option here; the car wins on luggage, late evenings and door-to-door timing.
Evening returns. The last train home is the constraint for anyone at a show, a dinner or Fallsview Casino Resort. A car booked for 11:30 p.m. leaves at 11:30 p.m.
Arriving at Hamilton airport instead
If you are flying into John C. Munro Hamilton International (YHM) rather than starting at home, the airport is about 90 km (56 mi) from the Falls, usually 1 h 20 – 1 h 30. The airport's transportation page says limo and shuttle services must be pre-arranged directly with the provider, and that the HSR A-Line Express (route 20) links the airport with downtown and the Hamilton GO Centre. A pre-booked car with flight tracking avoids two buses with luggage. See our Hamilton airport transfer page and the post on YHM as the underrated Niagara arrival.
The last few kilometres
This is the part of the train trip people forget to plan. Niagara Falls GO shares the VIA Rail station at 4267 Bridge Street, which is about 4 km from the Falls and has no free customer parking. From there you need a local bus, the WEGO visitor buses, a taxi or a booked car to reach Fallsview, Clifton Hill or Table Rock. Niagara Parks lists a 24-hour adult WEGO pass at $16.00, as of 2026, on its WEGO page.
If you like the train but not the last mile, combine them: take the GO to Niagara Falls and book a short station pickup to your hotel. Our train and bus guide shows how the station works.
What to tell us when you book
A few Hamilton-specific details make the pickup smoother:
- Street parking in older neighbourhoods. Kirkendall, Westdale and Durand streets are narrow. Note whether there is a driveway the car can use.
- McMaster campus. Name the building and the nearest road access. Campus roads can be confusing for any driver new to them.
- Hospitals and work sites. If you are finishing a shift, give the exact entrance and allow a few minutes' buffer.
- Two passengers from two addresses. Add a second pickup as a stop, for example Westdale then Stoney Creek, which is on the way.
Day plans that start in Hamilton
Because the drive is short, Hamilton riders often fit more than one stop into a day, which is where a car booked by the hour earns its keep.
- Falls and wine country. Morning at Table Rock and the promenade, lunch, then 20 to 25 minutes north along the Niagara Parkway to the wineries of Niagara-on-the-Lake. The chauffeur takes you home along the QEW without doubling back through the Falls. Our Niagara-on-the-Lake wine tour page explains how tasting days are booked.
- The Twenty Valley on the way. The Beamsville Bench and Jordan wineries sit just south of the QEW between Grimsby and St. Catharines, so a tasting stop on the way to or from the Falls costs very little extra driving.
- Visitors staying in Hamilton. If friends are visiting you, a Niagara day followed by Hamilton's own escarpment waterfalls makes a full weekend; the post on the city of waterfalls as a Niagara add-on works in reverse too.
Nobody drives after a tasting, and nobody drinks in the car: Niagara Region's vehicle-for-hire by-law forbids drivers from permitting alcohol in the vehicle. That is the point of having a chauffeur on a wine day.
Chauffeur vs rideshare vs taxi for this trip
| Mode | Door-to-door time | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chauffeur from your door | About 50 min – 1 h 20 depending on start point | Fixed fare via the booker, shown before you pay | 2 bags (sedan) to 6 (SUV) | Luggage, late returns, Westdale and Mountain starts |
| Rideshare app | Similar drive once matched | Surge pricing on busy days | Car-dependent | Quick one-way daytime trips |
| Taxi | Similar drive | Metered or a flat rate agreed first | Sedan or minivan | Short notice |
| GO train from Confederation | Train time plus about 4 km local ride at the Niagara end | Distance-based GO fare | What you carry | Stoney Creek riders travelling light |
| GO via Hamilton GO Centre and route 12 | Longer, with a transfer | Distance-based GO fare | One bag | Budget travellers with flexible plans |
| Driving yourself | Same as a chauffeur | Fuel and parking near the Falls | Your car | Day trips where nobody drinks |
Verdict. If you live near Confederation GO and travel light, take the train; it is direct now and we would recommend it to a friend. A rideshare is also fine for a daytime one-way trip. A direct car makes sense from Westdale, Ancaster or the Mountain, with luggage, with a dinner booking at a set time, or when you are coming home after the last train.
