Toronto to Niagara Falls by Private Chauffeur: Door-to-Door Timing on the QEW

The map says about an hour and a half. On a Friday at five it can be closer to three. Here is how our dispatchers actually time the run from a downtown lobby to a Fallsview porte-cochère, hour by hour and bottleneck by bottleneck.

"How long from Toronto to Niagara Falls?" is the question our reservations desk answers more than any other, and the honest reply always starts with "when are you leaving?" The distance never changes: about 130 km (80 mi) from Union Station to the Fallsview hotels. The time can double.

This post is how NiagaraFallsLimo.net plans the run from Toronto to Niagara Falls: the road in segments, the planning windows we use by hour of day, the places the minutes disappear, and how a downtown pickup really works when your building has a loading dock, a concierge and a one-way street out front.

How long does it take to get from Toronto to Niagara Falls by car?

About 130 km (80 mi) from downtown Toronto, usually 1 h 30 – 1 h 45 off-peak and 2 h – 2 h 45 on a weekday afternoon or summer Friday. NiagaraFallsLimo.net collects you at your lobby and drives the Gardiner and QEW to your Niagara hotel door. Book point to point online; the fixed fare shows before you pay.

The route, segment by segment

The drive is one highway with six distinct personalities.

  1. The Gardiner Expressway, downtown to the Humber. A short elevated stretch along the waterfront, and often the slowest kilometre-for-kilometre of the trip at rush hour.
  2. The QEW through Etobicoke and Mississauga. Wide and usually moving, but merge-heavy at Highway 427 and around Mississauga's interchanges.
  3. Oakville. Weekday commuters heading west in the morning and east in the evening.
  4. Burlington and the Skyway. The Highway 403 junction feeds traffic onto the QEW just before the Burlington Bay James N. Allan Skyway, a high bridge over the harbour mouth. This is the pinch point everyone remembers.
  5. Hamilton to St. Catharines. Generally the easiest stretch, along the lakeshore past Grimsby and the Twenty Valley, then the Garden City Skyway over the Welland Canal.
  6. Into Niagara Falls. Off the QEW at Highway 420 for the Falls and Clifton Hill, or at an exit further south for some Fallsview addresses, then city streets to the hotel.

Pearson travellers join at the 427 instead of starting on the Gardiner; the distance to the Falls is about 121 km. Our Pearson to Niagara Falls page covers that version, and the Toronto to Niagara Falls route page has the overview.

Planning windows by hour of day

These are the door-to-door windows we plan with, from a downtown Toronto lobby to a Niagara Falls hotel. They are not guarantees; a collision or a lane closure changes any of them.

Departing downtownPlanning windowNotes
Weekday, 5:00 – 6:30 a.m.1 h 25 – 1 h 40The quickest run of the day
Weekday, 7:00 – 9:00 a.m.1 h 40 – 2 h 10Gardiner congestion and westbound commuters to Oakville
Weekday, 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.1 h 30 – 1 h 45Usually smooth
Weekday, 3:00 – 7:00 p.m.2 h – 2 h 45Worst on Fridays; the Skyway is the main hold-up
Any day after 8:00 p.m.1 h 25 – 1 h 40Watch for overnight lane closures
Summer Saturday morning1 h 40 – 2 hEveryone else is going to the lake too
Sunday afternoon, Niagara to Toronto2 h – 2 h 45The eastbound mirror of Friday

Long weekends stretch every window. On a Victoria Day or Labour Day Friday, plan the afternoon departure at the top of its range or later in the evening.

Where the time really goes

Three places account for most delays, and knowing them changes when you book.

The Gardiner at rush hour. Leaving a downtown building at 8 a.m. or 4:30 p.m. means joining the Gardiner when it is at its slowest. Even ten minutes earlier can help. Some downtown pickups use Lake Shore Boulevard for the first stretch instead; the chauffeur decides on the day.

The Burlington Skyway and the 403 merge. Traffic from Highway 403 and the QEW funnels together before the Skyway. Afternoon and Friday congestion here can add half an hour on its own. It cannot be avoided on the direct route, which is why the afternoon windows above are so much wider.

The last few kilometres. On a summer evening, the streets near Clifton Hill and the Fallsview hotels are busy with visitors. Hotel porte-cochères fill up at check-in time. Your chauffeur pulls in where the hotel allows and brings the bags to the door. Our Fallsview hotels guide notes the main entrances.

Construction changes the picture season to season. We check routing each day rather than promising a fixed time months ahead, which is also why we do not promise an arrival to the minute.

Downtown pickups: condos, hotels and Union Station

A downtown pickup has more moving parts than a suburban driveway, and a little detail in the booking makes it painless.

  • Condo towers. Give the exact entrance: many buildings have a front lobby on one street and a loading area on another. If your building has a concierge, tell them a car is coming; some ask drivers to wait in a lay-by rather than at the door.
  • Hotels. The chauffeur arrives just before the booked time and waits where the hotel's door staff indicate. Toronto's by-law for limousines requires trips to be pre-arranged, so cars do not queue for long outside hotels; a confirmed booking is how that works.
  • Union Station. It is busy at every kerb. If you are arriving by train, give the train number so we can track it, and agree a specific door.
  • Luggage. A Standard Sedan takes two large bags; an SUV takes six. Tell us about golf bags, strollers or extra cases.

Travel agents and hotel desks arranging pickups for guests will find more in our post on downtown Toronto hotel pickups. If you are starting from the suburbs, see the Mississauga to Niagara Falls and Vaughan and Markham routes.

The 407 ETR question

Highway 407 ETR is an electronic toll highway across the north of the Greater Toronto Area. It has no toll booths; cameras and transponders bill each trip by licence plate, which surprises visitors renting cars. For a downtown pickup it rarely helps, because it runs well north of the waterfront. For pickups in Vaughan, Markham or Richmond Hill, it can be the quicker way to reach the QEW in Burlington when the 401 and the Gardiner are slow. Our post on planning a 407 ETR ride from Markham and Richmond Hill explains when we use it.

When the GO train or bus is the better choice

Sometimes it is, and we would rather say so. GO Transit advertises trains to Niagara Falls seven days a week, year-round, and sells GO and WEGO combination tickets. Niagara Falls GO shares VIA Rail's station on Bridge Street, which VIA Rail places about 4 km from the Falls; GO notes it is unstaffed and has no free parking. Check the GO timetable for the trip time on your day.

By bus, FlixBus lists at least 13 trips a day from Toronto to Niagara Falls, a minimum trip time of 1 h 30 for about 125 km, and fares from $20.98 as of 2026, with stops including Union Station Bus Terminal and Table Rock.

If you are travelling alone, light, and to a hotel near a stop, the bus or train is good value. Our train and bus guide compares the options in detail.

The verdict: one person with a backpack and a flexible arrival should look at the bus or train first. A rideshare is fine one way if the timing is not critical. A chauffeur wins for two or more people, families with car seats, anyone with real luggage, a fixed dinner or show time, or a trip that continues across the border.

Who this transfer suits

Individuals with a fixed appointment, such as a conference, a dinner or a show, value knowing the car is at the lobby at 4 p.m. and not five minutes after a rideshare accepts. Couples arriving for a weekend get door to door without the station change. Families avoid the train-to-taxi shuffle with children and car seats. Groups of up to twelve travel together in an Executive Sprinter, with luggage. Heading back the other way? Frequently asked questions

How far is Toronto from Niagara Falls?

About 130 km (80 mi) by road from downtown Toronto to the Falls, and about 121 km from Toronto Pearson. The route follows the Gardiner Expressway and the QEW around the western end of Lake Ontario.

What is the best way to travel from Toronto to Niagara Falls?

For one person travelling light, the bus or GO train is good value. For two or more, families with children or anyone with luggage, a pre-booked car is simpler: door to door, no station connection and a fixed fare known in advance.

What time should I leave Toronto to avoid traffic?

Before 7 a.m., between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., or after 8 p.m. on weekdays. Weekday afternoons from 3 to 7 p.m., especially Fridays, are the slowest, mainly at the Gardiner and the Burlington Skyway.

How much is a limo from Toronto to Niagara Falls?

It depends on the vehicle, the date and your exact pickup and drop-off. The booker shows the fixed all-in fare for your trip before you pay, so you can compare a sedan, an SUV and a Sprinter side by side.

Is there a train from Toronto to Niagara Falls?

Yes. GO Transit runs trains to Niagara Falls seven days a week, year-round, and VIA Rail also serves the station on Bridge Street. The station is about 4 km from the Falls, so you will need a connection to your hotel.

How much is Uber from Toronto to Niagara Falls?

Rideshare apps price the trip at the time of booking and apply surge pricing when demand is high, so the figure changes. A pre-booked chauffeur gives you a fixed fare in advance, which is often the deciding factor for people travelling at peak times.

Can the chauffeur pick me up at my condo in downtown Toronto?

Yes. Enter the exact entrance in the booker and mention any concierge or loading-area instructions. The chauffeur arrives just before the booked time and helps with luggage.
