Most Niagara itineraries are planned forwards: arrive, check in, see the Falls. The last day is the one that goes wrong, because the trip from Niagara Falls to Toronto is the leg with a hard deadline at the end — a boarding gate at Pearson, a curtain on King Street, puck drop at the arena — and it runs on the busiest road in the region at the busiest time of the week. Getting it right is mostly arithmetic. This post shows how the NiagaraFallsLimo.net desk times return rides for solo travellers and couples, and when a train or bus is the smarter choice.
How long does it take to get from Niagara Falls to Toronto?
Niagara Falls to downtown Toronto is about 129 km (80 mi) on the QEW and the Gardiner, usually 1 h 35 – 1 h 50 off-peak; on a Sunday afternoon or holiday Monday allow 2 h 30. Toronto Pearson is about 121 km. NiagaraFallsLimo.net drives either; the online booker shows the fixed fare before you pay.
Those are the numbers to plan with. The rest of this post is about the gap between the good day and the bad one.
Why the return leg runs slower
Three things stack up on the way back to the city:
- Weekend traffic returning home. On Sunday afternoons and holiday Mondays, everyone who spent the weekend in Niagara, wine country or the Hamilton area heads for Toronto at once. The QEW typically thickens from St. Catharines and slows through Burlington, across the Skyway, and on through Oakville and Mississauga.
- The downtown end. If you are going to the core, the last stretch uses the Gardiner Expressway, which the City of Toronto has been rebuilding in sections; the stretch from Dufferin to Strachan reopened fully in late October 2025, and further work is planned. Current restrictions are on the City of Toronto Gardiner page.
- Event traffic. A game or a concert downtown adds cars around the arena and the stadium in the hour before the start.
- Winter weather. Lake-effect snow off Lake Ontario can turn the open stretches of the QEW between Grimsby and Burlington slow and slippery with little warning, and the Skyway is exposed to wind. From December to March, add 20 to 30 minutes to any return with a deadline, and more if Environment Canada has posted a snow warning.
Chauffeurs check live traffic before leaving and may use the 403 and 407 ETR for a Pearson run, or The Queensway and Lake Shore Boulevard when the Gardiner is closed. The fare is fixed in the booker, so the route does not change the price.
Work backwards: the departure formula
Here is the method we use, step by step.
- Start from your hard time: the flight departure, the curtain, the first pitch.
- Subtract your arrival buffer. For flights, Toronto Pearson has advised arriving at least two hours before a domestic flight and three hours before an international one; US-bound passengers clear US preclearance in Toronto before boarding, so treat US flights like international ones. For a show, aim to be at the door 30 to 45 minutes before curtain.
- Subtract the drive time for that day: 1 h 50 on a weekday, 2 h 30 on a Sunday afternoon or holiday Monday, and a little more in snow.
- Subtract 15 minutes for loading bags and leaving the hotel.
Example — a Sunday evening flight. An international flight from Pearson at 9:30 p.m. means being at the terminal by 6:30 p.m. Take off 2 h 30 for Sunday traffic and 15 minutes to load: leave your Fallsview hotel by about 3:45 p.m.
Example — a Saturday show. For a 7:30 p.m. curtain at the Royal Alexandra Theatre on King Street West, be at the door by 6:45 p.m. On a Saturday allow about two hours, plus loading: leave Niagara by about 4:30 p.m.
If the answer feels early, it is meant to. Leaving 20 minutes late on a Sunday is the most common reason people call us from the QEW worried about a gate.

Flying out of Pearson or Billy Bishop
Toronto Pearson (YYZ) is about 121 km (75 mi) from Fallsview, usually 1 h 35 – 1 h 50 off-peak. The car drops you at the departures curb of your terminal; add your flight number in the booker so the chauffeur goes to the right one. Our Toronto Pearson transfer page covers terminals and timing, and Pearson's own ground transportation page explains how pre-arranged services work at the airport.
Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport (YTZ) is about 127 km and sits on the island off downtown. Drop-off is a brief curbside stop outside the mainland pavilion, where a pedestrian tunnel takes you from curb to check-in in under six minutes, according to Billy Bishop airport. Since March 10, 2026, US-bound passengers at Billy Bishop clear US preclearance before departure, so allow time for it. Because the last kilometres run through the downtown waterfront, add a margin on event days. Our Billy Bishop transfer page has more.
Getting to a show or a game downtown
Most evening destinations sit within a few blocks of each other: the King Street West theatre district, Scotiabank Arena on Bay Street, and the stadium by the waterfront. The chauffeur drops you as close to the entrance as traffic control allows and, on busy nights, may stop a block away rather than join a queue of taxis. If you want a ride back to your Toronto hotel after the event, book it as a second leg with a pickup time and agree a meeting corner nearby; arenas and theatres empty all at once, and a fixed spot beats searching the crowd. Our concerts and sports transportation page explains event pickups.

Leaving from Niagara-on-the-Lake instead
If your last night is in wine country, the distance to downtown is almost the same — about 128 km from the Shaw Festival area — but the first 20 minutes are on regional roads through the orchards before the QEW. Add ten minutes to the formula. After a Shaw matinee, the timing is covered in our post on Niagara-on-the-Lake to Toronto after a Shaw matinee.
Booking it with NiagaraFallsLimo.net in 3 steps

Chauffeur vs rideshare vs taxi for this trip
| Mode | Door-to-door time | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private chauffeur | 1 h 35 – 1 h 50 off-peak; 2 h 30 on Sunday afternoons | Fixed fare via booker, no Sunday surge | Full luggage | Flights, shows, games with a hard deadline |
| Rideshare app | Similar driving time once matched | Surge pricing when demand peaks on Sundays | Depends on car | Flexible trips without a deadline |
| Taxi | Similar driving time | Metered over about 129 km | Trunk only | Short trips within Niagara |
| GO train to Union | Varies by day; check GO's Niagara schedule | GO fares by distance; GO+WEGO combo tickets sold | What you carry | Day visitors returning to downtown, no flight to catch |
| FlixBus to Union Station Bus Terminal | Minimum 1 h 30 on the road, plus waits | From $20.98 on FlixBus (as of 2026) | One bag each | Solo travellers on a budget |
| Driving yourself | 1 h 35 – 1 h 50 plus parking and rental return | Fuel, parking, any 407 tolls | Your own car | Travellers with a car to return anyway |
The honest verdict. If you are heading back to a downtown hotel with no flight or show to catch, the GO train from Niagara Falls station on Bridge Street to Union is a pleasant, inexpensive ride; check GO Transit's Niagara page for the day's trips. FlixBus also runs many daily trips to Union Station. A rideshare can be fine on a quiet weekday. When there is a gate, a curtain or a game at the end, though, a pre-booked car with a fixed pickup time is the safest option: no waiting for a match, no surge on a Sunday, and luggage goes straight from the hotel lobby to the terminal curb. Our chauffeur vs taxi vs rideshare guide goes deeper.
Who this suits
Individuals with an evening flight are the most common riders on this leg; a sedan and a fixed pickup time remove the worry — see our individuals page. Couples ending a Niagara weekend with a Toronto show book the Mercedes and a second leg to their city hotel. Families flying home from Pearson choose an SUV for luggage and car seats. Groups heading to a concert or a game travel together in an Executive Sprinter.

Frequently asked questions
How long is the drive from Niagara Falls to Toronto?
About 129 km (80 mi) to downtown and 121 km (75 mi) to Toronto Pearson. Off-peak it usually takes 1 h 35 – 1 h 50. On Sunday afternoons, holiday Mondays and in snow, allow about 2 h 30 to be safe.
What time should I leave Niagara Falls for an evening flight at Pearson?
Work backwards: subtract the airport buffer (at least two hours for domestic, three for international and US flights), then the drive time for that day, then 15 minutes to load. For a 9:30 p.m. international flight on a Sunday, that means leaving Fallsview by about 3:45 p.m.
Is Sunday traffic on the QEW really that bad?
Often, yes. On Sunday afternoons and holiday Mondays, weekend visitors returning to the city fill the Toronto-bound QEW, typically slowing through Burlington, the Skyway and Oakville. A morning or late-evening departure is usually much quicker.
Can you take us straight to a theatre or the arena?
Yes. Enter the venue as the drop-off and add your curtain or start time. The chauffeur drops as close to the entrance as traffic allows. If you need a ride afterward, book a second leg with a pickup time and a meeting spot.
Is the GO train a good way back to Toronto?
For a day visitor returning to downtown without a deadline, yes. GO trains run from Niagara Falls station on Bridge Street to Union Station. Check the schedule for your day, since service varies, and allow extra time if you then need to reach Pearson.
Do you charge more on a busy Sunday?
No. The booker shows the fixed all-in fare for your exact pickup, drop-off and vehicle before you pay. There is no surge pricing, whatever the traffic or the day.
Can the car drop us at Billy Bishop airport?
Yes. Drop-off is a brief curbside stop outside the mainland pavilion, and the pedestrian tunnel takes you to check-in in a few minutes. US-bound passengers clear preclearance there, so allow time for it as well.
What if our flight changes?
Update your booking as early as possible. Cancellation is counted from the scheduled pickup: more than 72 hours' notice is free; 72 hours or less 10%; 48 hours or less 50%; 24 hours or less or a no-show 100%.
