Most people who ask how to get to Niagara-on-the-Lake from Toronto without driving assume there is a train into town. There is not. The rails stop at St. Catharines and Niagara Falls, and the last stretch into the Old Town is where a car-free plan either works neatly or falls apart. This guide is written for couples coming for a Shaw Festival weekend, an inn stay or a winery day, and it is honest about when public transit is enough.

NiagaraFallsLimo.net runs pre-booked chauffeured cars between Toronto and Niagara-on-the-Lake every day of the year, so the times below come from the road, not from a brochure.

How do you get to Niagara-on-the-Lake from Toronto without a car?

You have two real options. Take a GO train to Niagara Falls and connect to the seasonal WEGO shuttles, or book a door-to-door car. NiagaraFallsLimo.net drives Union Station to Old Town Niagara-on-the-Lake, about 127 km (79 mi), usually 1 h 30 – 1 h 50 off-peak. Enter both addresses in the online booker to see your fixed fare.

The rest of this page explains each leg, what it costs you in time and transfers, and which months change the answer.

Why the trip is harder than the map suggests

Niagara-on-the-Lake sits on the Lake Ontario shore where the Niagara River meets it, roughly 20–25 km north of the Falls. It is a town of inns, theatres and vineyards rather than a transport hub. Three facts shape every car-free plan:

  • No train station in town. GO Transit and VIA Rail stop at St. Catharines and Niagara Falls. Neither line reaches the Old Town.
  • The visitor shuttle is seasonal. GO Transit's own page for Niagara-on-the-Lake sends riders to Niagara Falls GO, then onto WEGO buses, and says the shuttle service is available "through October".
  • Wine country is spread out. Even once you reach Queen Street, most wineries sit on Niagara Stone Road, the Niagara Parkway or the benches above Virgil, several kilometres apart.

So the question is less "can I get there" and more "how many changes, and what happens after 7 p.m.".

The GO train and WEGO route, step by step

Here is the public-transit chain GO Transit itself recommends on its Go to Niagara-on-the-Lake page:

  1. GO train from Union Station to Niagara Falls GO (4267 Bridge Street). The road distance for the same trip is about 130 km; the train runs along the lakeshore and through St. Catharines.
  2. WEGO Green Line (603 northbound) from the station to the Floral Clock on the Niagara Parkway, north of the Falls.
  3. Transfer to the WEGO Orange Line (604) to Fort George, at the edge of the Old Town. GO describes it as hourly from the Floral Clock, with the last return leaving Fort George at 7 p.m.

GO sells a GO+WEGO Combo Ticket covering the round-trip train, WEGO rides and the shuttle, and Niagara Parks posts current WEGO lines and passes on its WEGO page. Check both before you travel, because schedules change by season and Niagara Parks warns that routes and times can move without notice.

Where the chain breaks

  • Evening theatre. A Shaw Festival evening performance ends well after the 7 p.m. last shuttle from Fort George. Without a car you need a taxi from Niagara-on-the-Lake back to a station, and the GO station is in Niagara Falls, not next door.
  • Late autumn and winter. The shuttle is seasonal. After it stops, the train still runs, but the last 20-odd kilometres are a taxi or a pre-booked car.
  • Luggage. Two roller cases on a train, a station bus and a second shuttle is a long morning for an inn weekend.
  • Fort George is not your inn. The shuttle ends at the fort. If you are staying on the edge of town or out by the vineyards, you still have a walk or a cab.

For a fuller breakdown of the rail and bus network, our guide to getting to Niagara by train and bus covers fares, stations and the WEGO system in more detail.

What about St. Catharines and the regional buses?

St. Catharines is the closer rail stop to Niagara-on-the-Lake on a map: about 22 km (14 mi) from St. Catharines GO to the Prince of Wales Hotel corner, usually 25–30 minutes by car. The catch is the onward link. Niagara Region Transit's published regional routes include a "Niagara College NOTL Campus" link (routes 40/45) between St. Catharines and Niagara Falls, but the college campus is out by Glendale, not in the Old Town, and the Region's route list does not show a stop on Queen Street. Plan on a taxi or a booked car from St. Catharines if your destination is the historic district.

If your trip runs the other way, from the Falls to wine country, our sibling post on Niagara Falls to Niagara-on-the-Lake without a car looks at that shorter hop.

The door-to-door option: what the drive really looks like

A chauffeured car from downtown Toronto follows the Gardiner Expressway onto the QEW, crosses the Burlington Bay Skyway, runs past Grimsby and the Twenty Valley, then leaves the QEW for Niagara Stone Road (Highway 55) through Virgil into the Old Town.

  • Union Station or a downtown hotel to Old Town: about 127 km (79 mi), usually 1 h 30 – 1 h 50 off-peak. Allow 2 h 15 or more on a summer Friday afternoon, when the QEW through Burlington and Hamilton slows.
  • Toronto Pearson (YYZ) to Old Town: about 120 km (75 mi), with similar timing. Our Toronto Pearson airport transfer page explains where cars meet you at Terminals 1 and 3, and the sibling post on Pearson to Niagara-on-the-Lake inns walks through a flight-day arrival.

The core route page, Toronto to Niagara-on-the-Lake, lists the vehicle classes and pickup points if you want the short version.

Where the car actually stops in town

Queen Street is narrow and busy on weekends. Chauffeurs drop at the inn's own entrance where it has one, and otherwise pull in on a side street such as King, Picton or Regent rather than stopping in a live traffic lane on Queen. For the Shaw Festival, drop-offs work best on Queen's Parade by the Festival Theatre or just off Queen Street for the Court House Theatre, where the Shaw's 2026 season moved its smaller stage. Our Niagara-on-the-Lake inns page notes the entrances for the main properties.

The honest verdict. If you are two light travellers on a summer Saturday, staying until mid-afternoon and heading home before dinner, the GO train plus the WEGO shuttles is a perfectly good day out and costs far less than any car. A rideshare is fine for a single spontaneous ride in one direction. The pre-booked chauffeur wins when the plan includes evening theatre, cases for a two-night stay, a winery itinerary, a flight, or a date after the shuttle season ends, because none of those fit the 7 p.m. last bus from Fort George. Our chauffeur vs taxi vs rideshare guide goes deeper on the trade-offs.

Wine country on the same trip

Many couples come for the vineyards, and the logistics there are simple: nobody should drive after tastings. Ontario's Liquor Licence and Control Act and Niagara Region's vehicle-for-hire by-law also mean there is no drinking in our vehicles; the car is the safe ride between tasting rooms, not a lounge. If you buy bottles, the chauffeur loads them in the trunk, sealed.

The simplest pattern is a transfer from Toronto with a few winery stops on the way, or a separate day using the booker's "By the hour" mode. Our Niagara wine tour limo service explains how hourly bookings work, and the Niagara-on-the-Lake wineries page lists the estates along Niagara Stone Road and the Parkway.

Theatre weekends: timing a Shaw Festival trip

The Shaw Festival's 2026 season runs from April 2 to December 23, with holiday productions at the Court House Theatre and the Festival Theatre from early November, according to the festival's season announcement. Check the Shaw Festival site for curtain times. For a matinee, leave Toronto by late morning; for an evening show, book the return for about 20 minutes after the listed end time so the car is waiting rather than circling Queen's Parade.

If you are only going for the show and heading straight back, our sibling post on Niagara-on-the-Lake to Toronto after a Shaw matinee covers the return run in detail, and the Shaw Festival page has the theatre addresses.

Reserve your chauffeur for a theatre weekend

Booking it with NiagaraFallsLimo.net in 3 steps

  1. Enter the trip. Type your Toronto pickup (hotel, home, Union Station or Pearson with your flight number) and your Niagara-on-the-Lake inn or theatre, then the date and time. Add a return if you know it.
  2. Pick the car. A sedan or Mercedes suits two people with weekend bags; a Standard or Executive SUV takes up to six with luggage. Each class shows its fixed fare before you choose.
  3. Finish the details. Add passengers, bags, any child seat and meet & greet if you are flying in, then pay securely. Confirmation arrives by email.

Plans change: cancellations more than 72 hours before pickup carry no charge, with the sliding scale on the booker for shorter notice.

Who this suits

Couples are the classic case: an inn weekend, a play and a winery afternoon without anyone driving. Individuals heading to a conference or a single night often find the GO-plus-shuttle chain fine in summer and a car better after dark. Families with car seats and luggage save the most effort by going door to door. Groups of friends on a wine weekend usually fill an SUV or an Executive Sprinter, which keeps everyone together between tasting rooms. Our page for couples shows how we set up anniversary and getaway trips.

A few things locals know

  • Tourism Niagara-on-the-Lake's official visitor site lists festivals that fill the town, such as the Icewine weekends in January; book further ahead for those dates.
  • Parking on Queen Street is tight on summer weekends, which is one reason couples who drive themselves end up walking a fair distance from the car.
  • Many inns sit on quiet residential streets. Give the exact address in the booker rather than "Queen Street", and mention a side entrance if the inn uses one.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a train from Toronto to Niagara-on-the-Lake?

No. GO Transit and VIA Rail stop at St. Catharines and Niagara Falls, not in Niagara-on-the-Lake. GO's recommended route is the train to Niagara Falls GO, then WEGO shuttles via the Floral Clock to Fort George in season. Outside the shuttle season, the last leg is a taxi or a pre-booked car.

How long does it take to drive from Toronto to Niagara-on-the-Lake?

About 127 km (79 mi) from Union Station to the Old Town, usually 1 h 30 – 1 h 50 off-peak on the QEW. Allow 2 h 15 or more on summer Friday afternoons and holiday weekends, when traffic through Burlington and Hamilton slows the run.

Can you take a bus from Toronto to Niagara-on-the-Lake?

Intercity buses from Toronto serve Niagara Falls, not the Old Town. From Niagara Falls, the seasonal WEGO shuttle links the Floral Clock and Fort George. Niagara Region Transit runs regional routes toward the Niagara College campus near Glendale, but its route list does not show a Queen Street stop, so check before relying on it.

How much is a car from Toronto to Niagara-on-the-Lake?

NiagaraFallsLimo.net does not publish rate cards because the fare depends on your exact pickup, drop-off, time and vehicle. The online booker shows the fixed all-in fare for your trip before you pay, so you can compare a sedan with an SUV on the same screen.

Can you Uber in Niagara-on-the-Lake?

Rideshare apps can operate in the area, but availability in a small town varies, especially late in the evening or after a show. If you need a guaranteed ride at a set time, such as after the theatre or to catch a flight, a pre-booked car removes that uncertainty.

Is wine allowed in the car after a winery visit?

No. There is no drinking in our vehicles. Niagara Region's by-law forbids a vehicle-for-hire driver from permitting alcohol consumption in the vehicle, and Ontario's liquor law has no limousine exception. Taste at the wineries, and the chauffeur keeps your sealed bottles in the trunk.

What time does the last WEGO shuttle leave Niagara-on-the-Lake?

GO Transit's page says the last return shuttle leaves Fort George at 7 p.m. and that the seasonal service runs through October. Confirm the current timetable on the Niagara Parks WEGO page before you rely on it, since seasonal schedules change.
