Three things decide how a Family Day weekend at Niagara Falls goes: the weather on the QEW, how much ice has built up on the river, and whether you booked the hotel before everyone else did. You cannot control the first two. The third is entirely up to you, and it is the reason this guide starts with dates rather than attractions.

NiagaraFallsLimo.net drives families to the Falls every February. Here is what we have learned about the long weekend.

When is Family Day 2027?

Family Day 2027 is Monday, February 15, making a long weekend from Saturday, February 13. Niagara Falls is about 129 km (80 mi) from downtown Toronto, usually 1 h 30 – 1 h 50 off-peak, longer in snow. NiagaraFallsLimo.net books a family transfer with child seats online at a fixed fare shown before you pay.

Family Day is one of Ontario's nine public holidays under the Employment Standards Act, and it falls on the third Monday of February. Two other dates land on the same weekend in 2027:

  • Valentine's Day is Sunday, February 14. Expect couples in the view restaurants that evening. If you are a parent hoping for a night out, book a sitter and a table early. Our Valentine's Day date night plan covers that evening.
  • US Presidents' Day is also Monday, February 15. American families have the same long weekend, so the bridges can be busy in both directions, and US visitors fill hotels on the Canadian side too.

Book the hotel first. Fallsview rooms with a river view and the waterpark resorts are the first to go.

What the Falls look like in February

In a cold winter, mist freezes on everything near the Horseshoe Falls: railings, trees, the gorge walls. Ice can pile up on the river below, and chunks drift through the rapids. In February 2026, Niagara Parks described the partly frozen Falls as showing their most impressive ice formations in a decade. The water never stops; what freezes is the spray and the edges.

Niagara Parks' 2026 Family Day release named three good places to see the ice:

  • Journey Behind the Falls, for the close-up view from the portals and the lower observation deck.
  • The Tunnel viewing platform at the Niagara Parks Power Station, reached by a glass elevator 180 ft down, for a wide view from river level.
  • Niagara Takes Flight, the flying-theatre ride inside Table Rock Centre, for the bird's-eye version.

After dark, the Falls are lit from 5:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. from February 1 to March 11, per the Niagara Parks illumination schedule. The Winter Festival of Lights has finished by then; in 2027 it ends on January 10.

A Family Day weekend at Niagara Falls, three days

Saturday: arrive and swim

Leave Toronto in the morning, before the long-weekend traffic builds. Check in at a waterpark resort or a Fallsview hotel and spend the afternoon indoors. Great Wolf Lodge on Victoria Avenue has a 100,000 sq ft indoor waterpark kept at 84°F for overnight guests, and the Falls Avenue Resort at the foot of Clifton Hill has a three-acre indoor waterpark. Our post on Fallsview waterpark tickets and passes explains how access works there.

If the children still have energy after dinner, Clifton Hill is a few minutes from either resort. The arcades and dark rides are indoors, and the Niagara SkyWheel's climate-controlled gondolas run year-round, which makes it one of the few ways to see the illuminated Falls from above in February without standing in the wind. A short taxi is enough for that hop if you are staying close; with a car booked by the hour, the chauffeur simply waits at the bottom of the hill while you ride.

Sunday: the ice, then something warm

Start at Table Rock in the late morning, when the light is on the Horseshoe Falls. Do Journey Behind the Falls, then Niagara Takes Flight. Lunch at Table Rock Centre. In the afternoon, the Butterfly Conservatory is the warmest place in Niagara, a tropical garden under glass. Note that in early 2026 it closed for six weeks for maintenance and reopened on February 13, just in time for the long weekend; check its status before you plan around it.

Monday: one more stop, then home before the rush

The Power Station tunnel in the morning, then lunch and an early start home. Monday afternoon on the QEW toward Toronto is the slowest drive of the weekend, especially in snow, so leaving by early afternoon makes a real difference.

Flying home from Toronto Pearson instead? The airport is about 121 km (75 mi) from the Falls, usually 1 h 20 – 1 h 40 off-peak. On a holiday Monday with snow in the forecast, we plan the pickup with a wide margin and track your flight, so a delay at either end does not leave you waiting at the curb.

Family Day events at Niagara Falls

Niagara Parks ran a Family Day weekend program in 2026, from February 13 to 16. It included a live ice-carving demonstration at the Falls Incline Plaza, a free birding open house with a birds-of-prey presentation at the Niagara Glen Nature Centre, and a pop-up Frozen Falls Icewine Bar at Table Rock with hot chocolate for younger guests. The Floral Showhouse had a cyclamen display. The 2027 program had not been published when we wrote this in October 2026; the 2026 announcement came only four days before the weekend.

In Niagara-on-the-Lake, Wineries of Niagara-on-the-Lake runs its self-guided Chocolate & Cheese pairing tour on weekends in February and March, details on the Wineries of Niagara-on-the-Lake site. Niagara-on-the-Lake is a short hop from the Fallsview hotels, about 23 km. Tastings are for adults 19 and over, and nobody drinks in our vehicles. If icewine interests the adults in the group, our post on Niagara in January: icewine and frozen mist explains how it is made.

Dressing for the brink

The mist at Table Rock coats coats. Even on a dry day, anyone standing at the railing for more than a few minutes collects a layer of frozen spray. Practical rules for children:

  • Waterproof outer layer, hats that cover the ears, and gloves, with a spare pair in the car.
  • Boots with grip. Spray freezes quickly near the railing.
  • Short visits outdoors, long ones indoors. Plan 20 minutes at the brink, then an attraction or a café.

With a chauffeur, the spare clothes and the wet ones stay in the vehicle, which waits nearby. Our winter visit guide has a fuller checklist, and our post on Niagara Falls in winter and safe winter driving covers the roads.

Chauffeur vs rideshare vs taxi for this trip

The honest verdict. If you are from Hamilton, about 74 km (46 mi) and an hour away, or Oakville, about 94 km, and comfortable in snow, driving your own car for the weekend is reasonable. For a day trip with older children, the GO train and a WEGO pass are good value. A local taxi handles short hops between hotel and dinner. A pre-booked chauffeur earns its place when the weather is uncertain, when the children need booster or toddler seats, when you would rather not drive the QEW home on a holiday Monday afternoon, or when you want someone else to deal with wet boots and the car park. Our chauffeur vs taxi vs rideshare guide explains the trade-offs.

Booking it with NiagaraFallsLimo.net in 3 steps

  1. Enter pickup and drop-off. Your home address and your Niagara hotel, with date and time. Add the return for Monday at the same time, or choose "By the hour" for a Sunday of attractions.
  2. Choose a vehicle. For winter roads most families pick an SUV: the Standard (Suburban or Yukon XL) or the Executive Black (Escalade or Navigator), each for up to six people and six bags. Each class shows its fixed fare before you pay.
  3. Add seats and extras, then pay. Child, toddler and booster seats, passenger count and bags. Confirmation arrives by email. Long weekends can carry a cancellation deadline different from our standard 72-hour terms; it is printed on your confirmation.

Who this weekend suits

Families are in the name, and the weekend works best with younger children who love waterparks and butterflies; see our families page. Couples can make it a quiet winter break, with Valentine's dinner on the Sunday. Individuals, such as photographers chasing the ice, can do a single day by car from Toronto. Groups of two or three families sharing a resort often book an Executive Sprinter for the attractions day. Our Toronto to Niagara Falls route page covers pickups across the GTA, and our Fallsview hotels guide helps with the room. Planning the next school holiday too? See March Break in Niagara Falls.

Frequently asked questions

When is Family Day in Ontario in 2027?

Family Day is the third Monday of February. In 2027 it is Monday, February 15, giving a long weekend from Saturday, February 13. It is a public holiday under Ontario's Employment Standards Act. Valentine's Day falls on the Sunday of the same weekend, and US Presidents' Day is the same Monday.

Is Niagara Falls frozen in February?

The Falls never stop flowing, but in a cold winter the mist freezes on railings, trees and the gorge walls, and ice builds on the river below. In February 2026, Niagara Parks said the partly frozen Falls showed their most impressive ice formations in a decade. How much ice you see depends on that winter's temperatures.

What is open at Niagara Falls on Family Day?

Niagara Parks' year-round attractions normally open: Journey Behind the Falls, the Power Station and its tunnel, Niagara Takes Flight, the Floral Showhouse and, in most years, the Butterfly Conservatory. Clifton Hill's indoor attractions and the waterpark resorts are open too. Seasonal sites such as the boats and the Aero Car are closed until spring.

Is the Winter Festival of Lights on during Family Day?

No. The Winter Festival of Lights runs from November 14, 2026 to January 10, 2027, so it has ended by mid-February. The Falls illumination still runs every night, from 5:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. from February 1 to March 11.

Is it safe to drive to Niagara Falls in February?

The QEW is a major highway and is maintained in winter, but February can bring snow, freezing rain and wind on the Burlington Skyway. Check the forecast, leave extra time, and avoid the Monday afternoon rush. A pre-booked chauffeur watches conditions on the day and plans the departure around them.

Do we need passports for Family Day at Niagara Falls?

Not if you stay on the Canadian side. If you plan to cross to Niagara Falls, New York, every passenger, including children, needs valid documents to enter the US and to return to Canada. With US Presidents' Day on the same Monday, expect busier bridges in both directions.

What does a Family Day transfer to Niagara Falls cost?

It depends on your pickup, the vehicle and whether you book a return trip or by the hour. Put the trip into the booker and you see a single fixed price before checkout, with no long-weekend surge. Add child seats during booking so the price you see is the price you pay.
