Niagara Falls Weather by Month: Planning Your Ride Around It

Weather at Niagara does more than decide what to pack. It moves the boat season, cancels fireworks on windy nights and turns a 90-minute highway drive into three hours. Here is what each month usually brings, from the official records, and what it means on the road.

Most weather guides tell you whether to bring a sweater. This one is written from a reservations desk, where weather is a logistics question. A snow squall over the QEW decides when a Pearson pickup should leave. A gusty evening decides whether the 10 pm fireworks go ahead. A late-melting Lake Erie decides when the first boat sails. Knowing what is normal for each month lets you plan the day, and the drive, around it.

The figures below are Niagara Falls weather normals from Environment and Climate Change Canada, the federal weather service, followed by a month-by-month guide to how conditions affect roads and attractions, and how NiagaraFallsLimo.net adjusts bookings when the weather turns.

What is the weather like in Niagara Falls each month?

Niagara Falls has cold, snowy winters and warm, humid summers. January averages a high near -0.4 °C and about 48 cm of snow; July averages about 27 °C. NiagaraFallsLimo.net drives Pearson to the Falls, about 121 km (75 mi), around 1 h 35 in good weather and longer in snow. Book online; fixed fares show before payment.

The numbers come from Environment and Climate Change Canada's 1981–2010 Canadian Climate Normals for the Niagara Falls (NPCSH) station in the city. Normals are 30-year averages, not forecasts. Any given week can be warmer, colder, wetter or drier.

November8.7 °C1.1 °C91.8 mm9.8 cm
December2.7 °C-4.1 °C81.1 mm31.8 cm

For readers who think in Fahrenheit: a January high near -0.4 °C is about 31 °F, a July high of 27.4 °C is about 81 °F, and a January low of -7.8 °C is about 18 °F.

Two patterns stand out. Precipitation is spread fairly evenly through the year, with September the wettest month on these normals. And snow is concentrated in December, January and February, with a long tail into March and a little in April and November.

January to March: snow, ice and short days

What it is like. The coldest stretch of the year. January has the most snow, and the normals record about 16 days in January when the temperature never rises above freezing. Spray from the Horseshoe Falls freezes on railings and trees near Table Rock, which is the season's great sight.

What it does to the drive. Most winter days are drivable without fuss: the normals count only about three or four days in January with 5 cm or more of new snow, and around half a day of freezing rain. The trouble is that those days are hard to predict, and lake-effect squalls along the Lake Ontario shore can drop visibility suddenly on the QEW. The desk checks Ontario 511 and the forecast before every winter pickup. Ontario's winter driving guidance recommends four winter tires and says never to pass a working snowplow.

What it does to attractions. The boats, the Whirlpool Aero Car and the White Water Walk are closed until spring. Journey Behind the Falls, the Power Station and the Butterfly Conservatory are open year-round. Niagara Parks lights the Falls from 5:00 pm in January and 5:30 pm from February 1. Our visiting Niagara Falls in winter guide and the post on Niagara Falls in winter go deeper.

April and May: changeable, then lovely

What it is like. April can bring a late snowfall and frosty nights; May is usually mild. Both months have rain on about 11 to 13 days.

What it does to the drive. Spring roads are generally easy. Rain slows the QEW, but not the way snow does.

What it does to attractions. This is when the boats return, and the timing depends on ice. The Lake Erie ice boom, which holds back lake ice all winter, is typically removed by April 1 or once the ice has largely cleared. In 2026 the Maid of the Mist opened on April 24, according to its official schedule, and Niagara City Cruises on May 1. The nightly 10 pm fireworks began on May 15 in 2026. The post on Niagara Falls in spring explains the ice boom.

June to August: warm, humid, the occasional storm

What it is like. Summer highs average 24 to 27 °C, and the normals record about six days in July above 30 °C. Thunderstorms occur on roughly one day a month, usually in the afternoon or evening.

What it does to the drive. Weather is rarely the problem in summer; traffic is. Friday afternoons southbound and Sunday afternoons northbound are the slowest times on the QEW. A heavy downpour can slow everything for half an hour.

What it does to attractions. Everything is open. Boats and outdoor attractions may pause for lightning, and the Niagara Parks fireworks page notes that strong winds can cancel a show. The heat pushes most visitors toward early mornings and evenings; the post on summer in Niagara Falls has a full timetable.

September and October: the golden months

What it is like. September is warm, with highs near 22 °C, and on these normals it is the wettest month, often in heavy showers rather than all-day rain. October is crisp, with highs around 15 °C.

What it does to the drive. Roads are easy. Harvest weekends bring more traffic to Niagara-on-the-Lake on Saturdays.

What it does to attractions. Boats, the Aero Car and the White Water Walk keep running into November. In 2026 the fireworks ended on Monday, October 12, Thanksgiving, and the illumination moved earlier through the season, to 6:00 pm in late October. The post on Niagara Falls in fall covers the harvest.

November and December: dark early, festive

What it is like. November is grey and cool, with a little early snow; December turns properly wintry, with around 32 cm of snow on average.

What it does to the drive. The first snow of the season catches some drivers out, and highways can be slow on those days. Evening drives come earlier too, because it is dark by late afternoon.

What it does to attractions. The boats close in November, and the Falls are lit from 4:30 pm. The Winter Festival of Lights ran from November 14, 2026 to January 10, 2027, lit nightly from 5 pm. Our fireworks and illumination guide covers the evening schedule.

How the desk adjusts a booking for weather

This is what happens behind the scenes when the forecast turns:

  1. The morning check. For every winter booking, and any day with a storm warning, the desk reviews the forecast and road conditions before the chauffeur sets out.
  2. Early contact. If timing should move, for example leaving Niagara earlier for a Pearson flight before snow arrives, we contact you as early as we can.
  3. Flight tracking. For airport pickups, flight tracking means a weather delay at your departure airport automatically shifts the pickup time.
  4. Honest advice. If a trip would be unwise in the conditions, we say so and help you rearrange. We do not promise drive times in a storm.

Distances do not change with the weather: Pearson to the Fallsview hotels is about 121 km (75 mi), downtown Toronto about 129 km (80 mi), and Buffalo Niagara International about 43 km (27 mi) plus the border. Our Toronto to Niagara Falls route page explains the usual route.

Booking it with NiagaraFallsLimo.net in 3 steps

  1. Enter the trip. Pickup and drop-off (airport, station, hotel or any address), date, time and flight or train number.
  2. Choose the vehicle. Each class shows a fixed fare for your exact trip. In winter, an SUV gives more room for coats and boots.
  3. Add extras and pay. Meet and greet, child seats, notes. Pay securely; the confirmation arrives by email, with the cancellation terms printed on it.

The honest verdict: in fine weather from May to October, the train or bus is a sensible way to reach the Falls, and a taxi or rideshare is fine within town. Weather tips the balance toward a pre-booked chauffeur on snowy winter days, on stormy evenings when app cars surge, and for airport runs with a flight to catch. Our best time to visit guide puts weather alongside crowds and events for each season.

Who should plan around the weather

Individuals travelling alone benefit most from knowing what is normal, because a solo traveller cannot share the driving; our individuals page has more. Couples choosing a romantic weekend can pick the season they want: frozen mist, spring gardens or autumn colour. Families with young children should avoid the most extreme heat and cold days and plan indoor breaks. Groups travelling in winter should allow extra time and book a vehicle with room for everyone's winter gear. If rain is in the forecast, the post on a wet-weather itinerary has a plan.

Frequently asked questions

What is the coldest month in Niagara Falls?

January. Environment and Climate Change Canada's 1981–2010 normals give it an average daily high of about -0.4 °C and an average low of about -7.8 °C, with about 48 cm of snow over the month.

What is the hottest month in Niagara Falls?

July, with an average daily high of about 27.4 °C (81 °F) on the 1981–2010 normals and roughly six days above 30 °C. Humidity can make it feel hotter, though the mist cools the brink.

When does it snow in Niagara Falls?

Mostly from December to March. The normals show about 32 cm in December, 48 cm in January, 32 cm in February and 25 cm in March, with small amounts in November and April. Only a few days a month bring 5 cm or more.

What is the rainiest month at Niagara Falls?

September, with about 98 mm of precipitation on the 1981–2010 normals, often in heavy showers. Rain falls fairly evenly through the year, though, with every month between about 60 and 100 mm.

Are the Niagara Falls fireworks cancelled in bad weather?

They can be. Niagara Parks says all fireworks displays are subject to weather, and strong winds that could push the fireworks off course may cause a show to be cancelled. The decision is made on the night.

Is it safe to drive to Niagara Falls in winter?

On most days, yes. Snow squalls along the QEW can reduce visibility quickly, so check Ontario 511 before leaving and use winter tires. A professional chauffeur who drives the route every day removes most of the stress.

What should I pack for Niagara Falls?

A waterproof layer in every season, because the mist near the Falls soaks clothing. Add a warm coat, gloves and boots with grip from November to March, and a hat, sunscreen and water bottle in summer.
