Niagara Falls Marathon and Race Weekends: Runner Transport

A race weekend at Niagara runs to a tight clock: bib pickup at the Convention Centre, a dawn start on Fallsview Boulevard, a closed Parkway and, for many runners, a flight home that afternoon. Here is how to move runners and supporters without stress.

Runners are good planners. They know their pace to the second and their gels to the kilometre. What catches many of them out at a destination race is the ground transport: the bib pickup that closes the evening before, the start area they cannot drive into, the friends trying to reach a viewing point on a road that is shut, and the flight home that leaves before the legs have recovered.

The Niagara Falls Marathon has a history going back to 1974, and its course beside the river is a big part of the appeal. This post covers the race-weekend schedule, where the start and finish are, which roads close, how international runners usually arrive, and how NiagaraFallsLimo.net handles drop-offs, supporters and airport runs for runners and running clubs.

How do runners get to the Niagara Falls Marathon start?

The 2026 Niagara Falls Marathon starts on Fallsview Boulevard between Murray and Robinson streets and finishes about 1 km away on Stanley Avenue. NiagaraFallsLimo.net brings runners from Toronto Pearson, about 121 km (75 mi) and 1 h 35 off-peak, and drops them near the start before closures. Book online; the fixed fare shows first.

The 2026 race is on Sunday, October 25, 2026, and the event is usually held in late October. According to the official marathon page, all 2026 races take place entirely within Canada, with a 10K, a half marathon and a full marathon. The site says a 5K is not currently offered for 2026. The organizers describe the marathon as a Boston Marathon qualifier.

Two rules on the race location page shape the whole weekend: there is no race-day bib pickup, and no walk-up registration. If you are flying in, plan to arrive by Saturday afternoon at the latest. A runner landing at Pearson on Saturday morning has time; one landing Saturday evening does not.

The course, and why the clock matters

The 10K, half and full all start along Fallsview Boulevard, head down Murray Street past the Skylon Tower and toward the Falls, then turn onto the Niagara Parkway with the Horseshoe Falls in view. From there the route follows the Parkway south past Rapidsview, through Kingsbridge and over the bridge in Chippawa, with each distance turning around on the flat river road. The finish is on Stanley Avenue in front of the Niagara Falls Convention Centre.

The organizers set a firm early cut-off: half and full marathon runners have 45 minutes to complete the first 3.5 km, by 9:00 am, so the busy tourist area near the Falls can reopen to traffic. For transport, that means the start area and the road down to the Falls are effectively closed to cars at dawn. The rest of the course stays closed into the afternoon.

Road closures and what they mean for drivers

The race site's spectator page says plainly that the Niagara Parkway is closed to traffic for the duration of the race and that people driving to viewing spots should use alternate routes on the QEW. For reference, when the race last used a Parkway course in 2024, Niagara Parks closed the Parkway from Miller's Creek Bridge in Fort Erie to Upper Rapids Boulevard from 5 am to 5 pm, reopening cross-streets as runners passed, according to its 2024 road closure notice. The 2026 course is different, so treat that as a guide to the scale rather than the exact plan, and check current notices from Niagara Parks and the City of Niagara Falls.

How the chauffeur works around it:

  1. Runner drop-off before 7 am. Hotels in Fallsview are close to the start, and many runners simply walk. For runners staying further out, in Niagara-on-the-Lake, St. Catharines or across town, the car drops them near the Convention Centre on Stanley Avenue, about 1 km from the start line, early enough to avoid the closures.
  2. Bag check. Bag check is near the start for half and full marathoners only, using clear bags. Leave valuables in the car or at the hotel.
  3. Finish-line pickup. Thousands of people leave the Stanley Avenue finish at once. We agree a pickup point on a nearby side street, away from the barriers, and send the exact location by message.

Supporters: reaching the viewing points

The race lists two spectator spots on the Parkway: Niagara Parkway and Weaver Road for the half marathon, around 13 km on the way out and 14 km on the way back, and Niagara Parkway and Netherby Road for the marathon, around 19 km out and 29 km back. The organizers say there are no shuttles to or from these spots and that spectators must drive themselves.

This is where a car booked by the hour is useful for families and clubs. The chauffeur takes supporters to a viewing point by inland roads, waits, and brings them back toward the finish in time to see the runner come in. Plan generously: closed roads mean longer detours, and nobody can drive along the course itself.

Runners flying in from abroad

International runners usually fly into Toronto Pearson, about 121 km (75 mi) from the Convention Centre, around 1 h 35 off-peak, or Buffalo Niagara International, about 43 km (27 mi) from the Fallsview hotels, around 45 minutes plus the border crossing. Our Pearson transfers page explains flight tracking and meet and greet, and our post on group airport transfers in Sprinter vans covers running clubs arriving together.

A few document points to check well before race week:

  • Flying into Canada. Visa-exempt travellers flying to Canada need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to board the flight; US citizens are exempt. Visa-required travellers need a visitor visa.
  • Arriving through Buffalo. Travellers coming by land from the US do not usually need an eTA, but every passenger needs their own valid passport or accepted document. The chauffeur crosses the bridge with you, and we never promise how long a crossing will take.

Our international visitors guide has the detail for each passport, and our page on documents for entering Canada lists what CBSA accepts at the bridges.

The Sunday flight home

Many runners fly out the same afternoon. The course closes at 3:00 pm, but most finishers are done well before that. Allow time for the finish area, a shower and checkout, then the drive: the Convention Centre to Pearson is about 122 km (76 mi), roughly 1 h 35 off-peak, plus the time Pearson asks you to arrive before departure. A late Sunday afternoon flight is comfortable for most half marathoners; a full marathoner aiming for an early afternoon flight is cutting it fine. The post on what time to leave Niagara for a Pearson flight explains how we set pickup times.

The honest verdict: if you are staying in a Fallsview hotel, walk to the start; it is close, and no car will get you nearer once the closures begin. A taxi to the expo on Saturday is fine. A pre-booked car is worth it for the airport legs, for supporters chasing viewing points around closed roads, and for clubs who want everyone and every bag moved together. Our chauffeur vs taxi vs rideshare guide compares them in more depth.

The same approach works for any other event that closes the Parkway. Whenever the river road is shut, the rule is the same: drop early, meet on a side street, and route supporters inland.

Who race-weekend transport suits

Individual runners travelling alone benefit most from a fixed airport transfer and a quiet ride home. Couples where one runs and one supports can book the car by the hour on race morning. Families coming to cheer need the viewing-point drives. Running clubs and charity teams travelling as a group should book an Executive Sprinter or several SUVs early; our groups page and group transportation page explain the options, and our Fallsview hotels guide helps you choose a base near the start.

Does the Niagara Falls Marathon still start in Buffalo?

No. The organizers say all 2026 races start, finish and run entirely within Canada. They note the Buffalo start has not returned since the pandemic, and they will keep assessing it for future years.

Can I pick up my bib on race morning?

No. Bib pickup is only at the Niagara Falls Convention Centre, Hall A, on Friday from 1 to 7 pm and Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm. There is no race-day pickup and no walk-up registration.

Where is the finish line of the Niagara Falls Marathon?

All races finish on Stanley Avenue in front of the Niagara Falls Convention Centre at 6815 Stanley Avenue. The organizers say it is about 1 km from the start line on Fallsview Boulevard.

Is the Niagara Parkway closed during the marathon?

Yes. The race site says the Parkway is closed to traffic for the duration of the race and that spectators should use the QEW for alternate routes. Check Niagara Parks and City of Niagara Falls notices for the exact closures.

Are there shuttles for spectators?

No. The organizers say there are no shuttles to or from the viewing points at the Parkway and Weaver Road or the Parkway and Netherby Road. Spectators must drive, which is why many families book a car by the hour.

How long does it take to get from the finish to Toronto Pearson?

The Convention Centre to Pearson is about 122 km (76 mi), usually around 1 h 35 off-peak on the QEW. Add time for the finish area, a shower and checkout, and arrive at the airport as early as your airline advises.
