A hotel guest from Singapore once asked our chauffeur to take her to the Maid of the Mist "on this side". She had read about the famous boat for years and assumed it sailed from Ontario, where she was staying. It does not, and she is far from the only visitor to be surprised. The name stuck in travellers' minds long after the arrangements changed. This guide answers the question is Maid of the Mist in Canada or the USA, explains which boat leaves from which bank of the river, and shows how NiagaraFallsLimo.net gets you to either dock.
Is the Maid of the Mist in Canada or the USA?
The Maid of the Mist sails from the USA, at Prospect Point in Niagara Falls State Park, New York. Canada's boat is Niagara City Cruises, from 5920 Niagara Parkway. The two docks are about 1.8 km (1.1 mi) apart by road via the Rainbow Bridge, plus the border. NiagaraFallsLimo.net drives to either; book online.
Both boats sail into the basin of the Horseshoe Falls, so from the water the experience is similar. What differs is where you board, which documents you need to get there, what currency you pay in and how tickets work.

How the boats ended up on different sides
For well over a century, the Maid of the Mist name covered boat tours from both riverbanks. The company traces its history to 1846, and its own history page tells that long story.
The change came in 2012, when the Niagara Parks Commission, the Ontario agency that controls the Canadian riverbank, awarded a 30-year land lease for Canadian-side boat tours to Hornblower Canada after a competitive process. The new operator began sailing from the Canadian side in spring 2014, while the Maid of the Mist kept its operation on the New York side. The Canadian operation was later rebranded and today sails as Niagara City Cruises, which describes itself as the official boat tour operator for Niagara Parks.
That is why older guidebooks, family photos and some websites still mention "Maid of the Mist from Canada". If you see that phrase, the boat you can actually board from Ontario is Niagara City Cruises. The sibling article on how Hornblower Niagara Cruises became Niagara City Cruises covers the name change in detail.
Which boat should you choose?
The water is the same; the logistics are not. A simple rule works for most visitors:
- Staying in Ontario without US documents? Ride Niagara City Cruises. No border, no second currency, and the dock is a few minutes from Fallsview hotels and the Clifton Hill strip.
- Staying in Niagara Falls, New York, or flying into Buffalo? Ride the Maid of the Mist. It sits inside Niagara Falls State Park, a short walk from downtown hotels, and about 39 km (25 mi) from Buffalo Niagara airport.
- Want flexibility? The Maid of the Mist's online tickets are valid on any operating day, which suits uncertain weather. Niagara City Cruises uses timed tickets, which suits a tight itinerary.
- Want an evening sailing? Niagara City Cruises runs a Fireworks Cruise after dark in the fireworks season.
International visitors should think carefully about documents. Entering the United States by land may need an ESTA or a US visa as well as a passport, and returning to Canada needs the right Canadian documents. If any member of your group is unsure, the Canadian boat avoids the question entirely. Our international visitors border guide explains both directions.

Getting to the Maid of the Mist from the Canadian side
From a Canadian hotel the route is the Rainbow Bridge, which lands next to Niagara Falls State Park. By road:
- Niagara City Cruises dock to Prospect Point: about 1.8 km (1.1 mi), around 5 minutes of driving plus the border.
- Fallsview to Prospect Point: about 3.3 km (2 mi), around 8 minutes plus the border.
There is no toll to enter the United States; the bridge toll is charged on the way back into Canada (US$6.00 or CA$8.50 for a car as of 2026, at the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission bridges). Every passenger must carry their own valid documents, and we never promise how long a crossing will take. The Maid of the Mist's own border page lists a passport, an enhanced driver's licence or a NEXUS, SENTRI or FAST card for Canadians, with birth certificates enough for Canadian children under 16.
Getting to Niagara City Cruises
The Canadian dock is at 5920 Niagara Parkway, at the bottom of the Clifton Hill area. From Fallsview hotels it is about 1.5 km (0.9 mi), a three-minute drive in normal traffic, and from Table Rock about 1.3 km. Your chauffeur sets you down as close to the entrance as traffic control on the Parkway allows, then waits or returns at an agreed time.
Many guests walk from Clifton Hill, which is perfectly reasonable on a dry day. The car earns its place when there are small children, older relatives, rain, or a tight link to dinner or the next attraction. The WEGO visitor bus also serves the area; its adult 24-hour pass is CA$16.00 as of 2026.
Doing both boats in one day
It is entirely possible to ride both boats in one day, and some families do it to compare. The order that tends to work: Niagara City Cruises in the morning on a timed ticket, lunch on the Canadian side, then across the Rainbow Bridge for the Maid of the Mist in the afternoon, using an online ticket so a queue at the office is not a problem. Late in the season the Maid of the Mist closes earlier, at 5:00 until October 31 and 4:00 from November 1 to 8 in 2026, so start the US half by early afternoon.
The sibling article on combining both boats from the Canadian side gives a timed plan, and the Canadian side vs American side guide compares everything else on the two banks.
Booking it with NiagaraFallsLimo.net in 3 steps
- Choose your dock. Enter your hotel as the pickup and either "Prospect Point, Niagara Falls State Park" or "Niagara City Cruises, 5920 Niagara Parkway" as the drop-off, with date and time. For both boats in one day, use the "By the hour" mode.
- Choose a vehicle. A Mercedes-Benz E-Class or S-Class suits two; a Standard SUV takes up to 6; an Executive Sprinter up to 12. Each shows its fixed fare.
- Confirm and pay. Add passengers, child seats and any extras, pay securely and keep the confirmation email. Bring every passport if you are crossing.

Chauffeur vs rideshare vs taxi for this trip
From a Fallsview hotel to the Maid of the Mist and back:
| Mode | Door-to-door time | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pre-booked chauffeur | About 8 min of driving each way plus the border; car waits | Fixed fare via booker | Strollers, day bags, spare clothes | Families, older travellers, both boats in one day |
| Walking the Rainbow Bridge | Walk from Fallsview to the bridge, across, then to Prospect Point | US$1.00 or CA$1.25 pedestrian toll as of 2026 | Day bag only | Energetic adults in good weather |
| Rideshare | Short, if a driver accepts a cross-border trip | Surge pricing possible | Depends on the car | Couples without car seats |
| Taxi | Short; confirm the driver will cross first | Metered or flat | Usually fine | One-way hops |
The honest verdict: if you only want the Canadian boat, you may not need a car at all; Clifton Hill hotels are within walking distance and the WEGO bus covers the rest. For the Maid of the Mist from Canada, fit adults can walk the bridge and enjoy the view. A pre-booked car makes sense when you want to cross with children or older relatives, keep dry clothes nearby or fit both boats into one day without a long walk back. Our chauffeur vs taxi vs rideshare guide compares the options in general.
Who this suits
Individuals on a short visit can see both banks in a single morning. Couples who want the Fireworks Cruise after dinner can be dropped and collected without parking. Families with young children appreciate a car that holds the spare clothes. Groups of up to 12 can travel together in a Sprinter and cross the bridge in one vehicle rather than queuing separately on foot.
Frequently asked questions
Can you ride the Maid of the Mist from the Canadian side?
No. The Maid of the Mist boards only at Prospect Point in Niagara Falls, New York. From Canada you either cross the Rainbow Bridge to reach it or ride Niagara City Cruises, which sails from the Canadian side of the gorge on a similar route.
Which boat is better, Canada's or America's?
Both sail into the Horseshoe Falls basin and both include a poncho. Choose by where you are staying and which documents you carry. The Canadian boat uses timed tickets and has a Fireworks Cruise; the US boat sells online tickets valid on any operating day.
Do I need a passport for Niagara City Cruises?
Not if you are already in Canada. The dock is on the Canadian side, so there is no border crossing. You only need documents for the border if you are travelling from the United States to reach it.
Is the Maid of the Mist still called the Maid of the Mist?
Yes, on the US side. The Canadian-side boats, run under a Niagara Parks agreement since 2014, now sail as Niagara City Cruises. Older references to the Maid of the Mist from Canada describe the arrangement before 2014.
How far apart are the two boat docks?
About 1.8 km (1.1 mi) by road via the Rainbow Bridge, a few minutes of driving plus the time at the border. On the water they share the same stretch of river below the Falls.
Do the two boats sail at the same time of year?
Roughly, yes. In 2026 the Maid of the Mist ran from April 24 to November 8, and Niagara Parks lists Niagara City Cruises as seasonal from April to November; it opened on May 1, 2026 after a late ice season. Neither sails in deep winter, when the gorge is often icy.
Can I see both boats from the shore?
Yes. From Queen Victoria Park and the Niagara Parkway on the Canadian side you can watch both fleets work the basin. On the US side, the Prospect Point Observation Tower gives a high view down to the landing.
