Ask friends about a Niagara Falls honeymoon and someone will mention heart-shaped bathtubs and souvenir shops. That picture is real, but it covers about four blocks of a region that stretches 56 km along the river, with formal gardens, vineyards, a theatre festival and two countries. The question is not whether Niagara is romantic. It is whether you plan the trip around the parts that are.
This post looks at how the "honeymoon capital" reputation began, what has changed recently, and how to build four days that feel like a honeymoon rather than a school trip, with a chauffeur from NiagaraFallsLimo.net handling the airport, the border and the wine country.
Is a Niagara Falls honeymoon still romantic?
Yes, if you stay in a falls-view room or a Niagara-on-the-Lake inn and skip the busiest tourist blocks. A Niagara Falls honeymoon now pairs the lit Falls at night with wineries about 23 km north. NiagaraFallsLimo.net meets you at Toronto Pearson, about 121 km away, and drives every day at a fixed fare booked online.
The romance is in the specifics: waking above the Horseshoe Falls, a long lunch among vines, walking the river after dark when the water glows in colour. None of that requires a wax museum.
How the Falls became a honeymoon destination
The habit is older than most people think. In 1801 Theodosia Burr, daughter of US Vice-President Aaron Burr, travelled from Albany to the Falls with her new husband, Joseph Alston, on their bridal tour. A few years later Jérôme Bonaparte, Napoleon's brother, made the trip with his bride by stagecoach, according to Destination Niagara USA. At first it was a journey for the wealthy. New rail lines and the Erie Canal later brought ordinary couples, and the Maid of the Mist boats have carried visitors since 1846.
Some traditions survive. The official visitor centre on the American side still hands out a "We Honeymooned in Niagara Falls USA" certificate, which makes a charming excuse to cross the bridge for an afternoon.
What has changed for honeymooners
A few things a returning visitor, or a parent who honeymooned here, should know:
- The hotels have been renamed and refitted. The former Embassy Suites on Fallsview Boulevard reopened on April 1, 2026 as the Hyatt Regency Niagara Falls Fallsview, with 611 rooms and suites on 42 floors, per Hyatt's announcement. The old Crowne Plaza on Falls Avenue is now The Brock Niagara Falls-Fallsview, Tapestry Collection by Hilton.
- Marineland has closed for good. Older guidebooks still list it. Do not plan around it.
- Wine country has grown up. The Niagara Peninsula is Canada's largest planted wine region, and Trius Winery Restaurant says it has held a MICHELIN Guide recommendation for three years.
- The lights are brighter. The illumination switched to programmable LEDs in 2016, with more than twice the old light and more colours.
Where to stay: falls view, inn or both
A falls-view room. The towers along Fallsview Boulevard face the Horseshoe Falls directly. Ask specifically for a room on the falls side; "city view" rooms look the other way. Our Fallsview hotels guide compares the main properties and their arrival driveways.
A Niagara-on-the-Lake inn. Old Town, about 23 km (14 mi) north and 30 minutes by car, is quieter, walkable and full of restaurants. The Vintage Hotels group runs the Prince of Wales, Queen's Landing and Pillar and Post there. See Niagara-on-the-Lake inns.
Split stay. Two nights at the Falls, two in wine country. A chauffeur moves the luggage between hotels in half an hour, and you never repack a rental car.
A four-day honeymoon plan
Day 1: Arrival. Land at Toronto Pearson and be met inside arrivals with a name board; meet and greet is a booker option, and flights are tracked, so a delay does not cost you the pickup. Pearson to Fallsview is about 121 km (75 mi), usually 1 h 35 – 1 h 50 off-peak, allowing 2 h+ on a summer Friday. Check in, sleep, watch the illuminated Falls from the window.
Day 2: The Falls up close. Morning at Journey Behind the Falls, descending 125 ft to portals at the foot of the Horseshoe Falls. From April to November, the Niagara City Cruises boat takes you into the mist. Afternoon on the Whirlpool Aero Car, running since 1916, then dinner high up at the Skylon Tower and a late walk along Queen Victoria Park.
Check your fixed fare from the airport
Day 3: Wine country. A chauffeured afternoon in Niagara-on-the-Lake: two or three wineries along John Street and Niagara Stone Road, a long lunch, a stroll on Queen Street, perhaps the Floral Clock on the drive back. Nobody drives after tastings, and bottles you buy ride sealed in the boot. Our post on the anniversary weekend spa and winery plan has a more detailed winery loop.
Day 4: The American side. Cross the Rainbow Bridge with your chauffeur for the Maid of the Mist, which runs from April 24 to November 8 in 2026, and Niagara Falls State Park, America's oldest state park. Collect your honeymoon certificate. Every passenger carries their own valid documents, and we never promise how long the crossing will take. From Fallsview to the US-side downtown is only about 3.5 km by road, plus the bridge.
Four ways honeymoons lose their shine, and the fixes
Landing at rush hour. A transatlantic flight that lands at Pearson at 4 pm on a Friday meets the slowest stretch of the QEW. Either accept a longer ride with a car that is comfortable to sit in, or spend the first night in Toronto and travel on Saturday morning.
The wrong room. "Fallsview" in a hotel name does not guarantee a view of the Falls from your window. Book the room category that says falls view, and confirm it by email before you arrive.
Too many tickets. Couples who buy every attraction pass end up queueing all day. Pick two attractions per day and leave the evenings empty for the river walk and the lights.
Driving yourselves into an argument. Navigating Fallsview parking, the Niagara Parkway and a bridge inspection lane after a wedding week is nobody's idea of romance. That is the strongest case for handing the keys, and the map, to someone else for the big days.
Documents for honeymooners from abroad
Many honeymooners combine Niagara with New York or Toronto, so the border deserves ten minutes of reading before you fly.
- Entering Canada by land. Travellers from eTA-required countries generally do not need an eTA when arriving by car, but visa-required nationals still need a visitor visa. An eTA is needed if you fly into Canada.
- Entering the US by land. Visa Waiver travellers need an approved ESTA before reaching a US land border, and an I-94 is issued electronically, with a land-border fee of US$30 (as of 2026). CBP encourages applying in advance on the CBP Link app or the CBP I-94 site.
- Names. Book flights, hotels and border documents in the same name. A new married name on a ticket but not on a passport causes delays.
Our pages on documents for entering Canada and the Toronto Pearson transfer cover the details.
Booking it with NiagaraFallsLimo.net in 3 steps
- Add each leg. Airport arrival with your flight number, the wine-country afternoon, the US-side day and the return to the airport. Use "By the hour" for the touring days.
- Pick your car. A Mercedes-Benz E or S-Class carries two people and two bags; a Standard Sedan takes two large cases. For a once-in-a-lifetime arrival, choose a Maybach or Rolls-Royce, with availability confirmed at booking.
- Finish and pay. Add meet and greet, note "honeymoon" for the chauffeur and pay securely. Confirmation comes by email.
Chauffeur vs rideshare vs taxi for this trip
| Option | Door-to-door time | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| UP Express plus GO train | Train via Union Station, then a taxi to the hotel | Rail fares plus metered taxi | Bags on two trains | Light packers on a budget |
| Intercity bus | About 1 h 30 minimum from Toronto | FlixBus from $20.98 (as of 2026) | Hold luggage | Solo travellers, daytime |
| Taxi from Pearson | Direct | Metered, long distance | Boot | Rare for this distance |
| Rideshare | Direct off-peak | Surge pricing at busy times | Standard boot | Short local rides |
| Rental car | Flexible | Rental, fuel, hotel parking | Your boot | Couples who enjoy driving |
| Private chauffeur | Arrivals hall to hotel door | Fixed fare via booker | Two large cases and more | Honeymoons, border days, wine days |
Verdict: for short hops around Clifton Hill, a taxi or rideshare is fine, and travellers with one bag each can take the train and save money. A private chauffeur is the better choice for the airport arrival after a long flight, the border day and wine country, which are the three moments where honeymoons usually go wrong. Our chauffeur vs taxi vs rideshare guide compares the options.
Who it suits
Couples, obviously, from first marriages to second ones; see our page for couples. Individuals arranging a surprise for a partner can pre-book the whole itinerary. Families sometimes tag along for the first day of a honeymoon combined with a wedding nearby; an SUV for six handles that. Groups rarely honeymoon together, but a "buddymoon" of two or three couples suits an Executive SUV.

Frequently asked questions
Why is Niagara Falls called the honeymoon capital?
Couples have visited on their honeymoons since at least 1801, when Theodosia Burr and Joseph Alston made a bridal tour from Albany. Jérôme Bonaparte followed a few years later. Railways and the Erie Canal opened the trip to ordinary couples, and the reputation stuck. The American-side visitor centre still gives out a honeymoon certificate.
Which side of Niagara Falls is better for a honeymoon?
Most honeymooners stay on the Canadian side, where the hotels face both falls and wine country is 30 minutes away. The American side is closer to the water at the State Park and the Maid of the Mist. A chauffeur can cross with you for a day, as long as each passenger carries valid documents.
What is the best month for a Niagara Falls honeymoon?
May to October brings the boats, gardens and wineries at full strength, with crowds in July and August. September and October combine harvest season and calmer streets. November and December are quiet, with the illumination from 4:30 pm and, from mid-November, the free Winter Festival of Lights.
How do we get from Toronto Pearson to Niagara Falls?
The drive is about 121 km, usually 1 h 35 – 1 h 50 off-peak. Options include trains via Union Station, intercity buses and a pre-booked car. With a chauffeur, flights are tracked, meet and greet in arrivals is available, and the fixed fare is shown in the booker before you pay.
Do we need an eTA if we drive into Canada from New York?
In most cases, travellers from eTA-required countries arriving by car, bus or train do not need an eTA, but visa-required nationals need a visitor visa. If you fly into Canada, you need the eTA. Rules change, so check the Government of Canada site before travel.
Can we have champagne in the car on our honeymoon?
No. Ontario's liquor law and the regional by-law for hired vehicles rule out drinking on board, so we do not allow it. A sealed bottle can be added in the booker as a gift to take away and open in your room.
How much does a honeymoon chauffeur in Niagara cost?
The booker shows the fixed all-in fare for each trip, for your exact pickup, drop-off and vehicle, before you pay. Airport transfers, hourly touring days and cross-border trips are all priced the same way, so you can compare options before committing.
