Guests staying in Old Town Niagara-on-the-Lake sometimes walk down to the river expecting to find the jet boats where a friend boarded years ago. They will not. Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours moved its main Canadian operation upriver to Queenston, and its current locations page lists only two departure points: Queenston, Ontario, and Lewiston, New York. Queenston is part of the Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake, so "jet boats from NOTL" is still true; it simply means a 15-minute drive rather than a stroll. NiagaraFallsLimo.net drives groups to the Queenston dock throughout the season, and this post covers the part the brochures skip: what to wear, what to bring and how to get everyone back to the hotel dry.
Where do Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours leave from in Niagara-on-the-Lake?
Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours' Canadian departure checks in at 55 River Frontage Road, Queenston, in the Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake, about 11 km (6.7 mi) and 15 minutes by car from Old Town or from Clifton Hill. NiagaraFallsLimo.net drives your group there and back; book the vehicle in the online booker.
The check-in sits beside the public Queenston Boat Ramp on the waterfront below Queenston Heights. The operator's locations page offers free on-site parking but says availability cannot be guaranteed, and mentions a shuttle from the Floral Clock that may not run all season.
A short history of the move
For about 25 years, the jet boats' main Canadian base was a dock in Niagara-on-the-Lake. In April 2018, the local news site Niagara Now reported that the company was moving its primary operation to Queenston, citing better parking, more amenities and links to the WEGO bus and the Floral Clock shuttle. At the time, the old NOTL dock was kept as a third location. Today the official site lists no departure in Old Town, only Queenston and Lewiston. If you read an older guide or hotel binder that sends you to the Old Town waterfront, it is out of date.
The drive to Queenston
| From | Distance to the Queenston dock | Usual time |
|---|---|---|
| Old Town Niagara-on-the-Lake (Queen Street) | about 11 km (6.7 mi) | 15 min |
| Clifton Hill, Niagara Falls | about 11 km (6.9 mi) | 15–20 min |
| Floral Clock, Niagara Parkway | about 3.6 km (2.2 mi) | 8–10 min |
| Toronto Pearson (YYZ) | about 115–125 km (71–78 mi) | 1 h 20 – 1 h 40 off-peak |
From Old Town the route follows the Niagara Parkway south along the river, past wineries and orchards, then down the escarpment into Queenston village. From Niagara Falls it runs north along the same Parkway, past the Floral Clock. Both are scenic and slow on summer weekends. Our Niagara Falls to Niagara-on-the-Lake route page covers the corridor.
Which boat: wet, dry or half and half
Every tour follows the same route: about 45 minutes round trip through the Niagara Gorge, through the Devil's Hole Rapids and into the Niagara Whirlpool. What changes is how wet you get. From the operator's frequently asked questions:
- Wet Jet. Open-topped. Every seat gets soaked, and riders may sit knee-deep in water in the Devil's Hole Rapids. Minimum height 44 inches.
- Dry Freedom Jet. Enclosed. Riders stay dry. Minimum height 40 inches.
- Wet Freedom Jet. The two front rows are open wet seats, sold to adults; the rest of the boat is enclosed. Front-row riders must be at least 13 and 100 lb.
Riders under 18 need an adult chaperone of 18 or over on board, and the operator asks that participants be free of heart, neck and back problems and not be pregnant. Our post comparing the wet boat and the dome boat goes into the choice in more detail.
The getting-back-dry plan
This is where groups go wrong. "Wet" on the Wet Jet does not mean splashed; it means soaked to the skin. Plan for it:
- Bring a full change of clothes. The operator recommends it, and change rooms are available on site.
- Wear shoes you can lose to the river. You cannot ride barefoot. Sandals with straps work, and river sandals are sold at check-in.
- Use the lockers. Complimentary lockers are provided. On wet tours, only hats, glasses and fully waterproof cameras with a wrist strap go on the boat; keys, wallets and phones stay in the locker.
- Pack a plastic bag per person. Wet clothes go in it, sealed, before anyone gets back in the car.
- Towel off before boarding the car. A quick towel in the change room makes the ride back far more comfortable for everyone.
With a pre-booked car, the dry bags can stay in the vehicle until you need them, rather than in a backpack on the dock. On an hourly booking the chauffeur waits nearby; on a point-to-point booking, fix the return pickup about 30 to 45 minutes after your tour's scheduled end to leave time to change.
Groups: one vehicle, one tour time
Jet boats are a group favourite, from stag and hen parties to corporate team days, and the transport is easiest when everyone travels together:
- Up to 6: Standard SUV or Executive Black SUV.
- Up to 12: Executive Sprinter (Mercedes-Benz).
- Up to 12, with a celebration feel: Party Bus, availability confirmed at booking.
- Larger groups: coaches on request.
Booking one vehicle means the whole group reaches check-in together, which matters for a timed tour. Our group transportation and stretch limo and Sprinter pages explain the options, and the bachelor and bachelorette limo page covers stag and hen days.
A word on the evening: if the plan after the jet boat is a winery, there is still no drinking in our vehicles, but nobody needs to drive between tastings either. That is rather the point. See Niagara-on-the-Lake wineries for the next stop.
Making it a Queenston half-day
The dock sits below the historic village of Queenston, so a jet boat morning extends naturally:
- Queenston Heights and Brock's Monument, on the escarpment directly above. The monument is 56 m tall with 235 steps to the top; The Friends of Fort George, who run it, noted that hours were shifting for the rest of the 2026 season while Parks Canada worked on site. See our Queenston Heights and Brock's Monument detour.
- The Laura Secord Homestead, in Queenston village, seasonal from May to October.
- Lunch in Old Town, 15 minutes north, once everyone is dry.
The Lewiston option, across the river
The second departure is in Lewiston, New York, on the waterfront boardwalk next to the Griffon Brewery & Gastropub. From Queenston it is just across the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge, which carries cars, limos and buses but not pedestrians, according to the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission. Choosing Lewiston from the Canadian side means a border crossing in each direction, so every passenger needs their own valid documents. It only makes sense if you are staying on the US side or combining the boat with a day in Lewiston. Our Lewiston-Queenston Bridge page explains the crossing.
Chauffeur vs rideshare vs taxi for this trip
| Mode | Door-to-door time | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Floral Clock shuttle plus WEGO | 30–60 min with transfers | Shuttle details from the operator; WEGO adult 24-hour pass CA$16 as of 2026 | Carry wet clothes yourself | Couples on a budget with flexible time |
| Rideshare (Uber, Lyft) | 15–20 min, but pickups at Queenston can be slow | Surge pricing at busy times | Boot space varies | Two or three people, one way |
| Taxi | 15–20 min, booked in advance for the return | Metered | Standard boot | Small parties |
| Driving yourself | 15–20 min, free parking not guaranteed | Fuel | Your own car | Visitors with a car who will not be drinking later |
| Private chauffeur | 15–20 min door to dock | Fixed fare via booker | Dry bags stay in the car | Groups, stag and hen parties, families, wet-boat riders |
The honest verdict. A couple staying near the Floral Clock with a car of their own can simply drive and park; the dock has free parking, though not guaranteed. A rideshare to the dock is fine for two people, but the return from a riverside village can mean a wait, so book the taxi or car back in advance. The chauffeur wins for groups who need one vehicle, for anyone riding the Wet Jet who wants dry bags waiting, and for days that continue to wineries. Read our chauffeur vs taxi vs rideshare guide for the wider picture.

Who this plan suits
Groups come first: one vehicle, one check-in, and our groups page shows the capacities. Families with teenagers who meet the height and age rules enjoy the Dry Freedom Jet or the Wet Jet. Couples staying at Niagara-on-the-Lake inns often pair the boat with a winery lunch. Individuals can join any tour and need only a one-way car and a return. Flying in? Pearson is about 115–125 km from Queenston; see Toronto Pearson transfers. For all the river's boat options in one place, see Niagara Falls cruise options.

Frequently asked questions
Do Whirlpool Jet Boats still leave from Niagara-on-the-Lake?
Yes, in the sense that the Canadian dock at Queenston is within the Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake. But there is no longer a departure in Old Town: the official locations page lists only Queenston, at 55 River Frontage Road, and Lewiston, New York. The main operation moved to Queenston in 2018.
How wet do you get on the Whirlpool Jet Boat?
On the open-topped Wet Jet, completely: every seat gets soaked, and riders may sit knee-deep in water through the Devil's Hole Rapids. The Dry Freedom Jet is enclosed and keeps you dry. Bring a full change of clothes for a wet tour; change rooms and complimentary lockers are on site.
How long is the Whirlpool Jet Boat ride?
About 45 minutes round trip, through the Niagara Gorge, the Class V Devil's Hole Rapids and into the Niagara Whirlpool. Allow extra time for check-in before and changing afterwards. For a chauffeured return, book the pickup 30 to 45 minutes after your tour's scheduled end.
What should I wear on the Whirlpool Jet Boat?
Quick-drying clothes and sandals with straps or shoes you do not mind soaking. You cannot ride barefoot, and river sandals are sold at check-in. On wet tours, only hats, glasses and waterproof cameras with a wrist strap are allowed on board; leave phones, wallets and keys in a locker.
Is there an age or height limit on the jet boats?
Yes. Riders must be at least 44 inches tall for the Wet Jet and 40 inches for the Dry Freedom Jet. Front-row Wet Freedom Jet seats need riders aged 13 or over and at least 100 lb. Anyone under 18 needs an adult chaperone aged 18 or over on board.
How do you get to the Queenston jet boat dock without a car?
The operator mentions a shuttle from the Floral Clock, reachable by WEGO, but says it may not run all season. A taxi or rideshare works for small parties. For groups, NiagaraFallsLimo.net drives everyone together to 55 River Frontage Road and back, with a fixed fare shown in the booker first.
Can we go to a winery after the jet boat?
Yes, and Niagara-on-the-Lake's wineries are close by. Change into dry clothes at the dock first. There is no drinking in NiagaraFallsLimo.net vehicles, but your chauffeur drives between tastings, so nobody in the group needs to stay sober for the wheel.
