Here is the trade that couples make when they book one of the hotels in Niagara Falls, NY. You wake up a short walk from Prospect Point and the American Falls, in a smaller, quieter downtown. In exchange, the Fallsview skyline, the revolving dining room and the restaurants that face the Horseshoe Falls sit across a river and an international border. NiagaraFallsLimo.net drives that evening crossing constantly, and the questions are always the same: when do we leave, where do we eat, and how late can we come back?

When should you leave a Niagara Falls NY hotel for dinner in Canada?

From the hotels around Old Falls Street, Fallsview restaurants are about 3–5 km away over the Rainbow Bridge, roughly 7–12 minutes of driving plus the border inspection. NiagaraFallsLimo.net suggests leaving with a generous margin before your reservation; book the pickup and return online and the booker shows a fixed fare before you pay.

We do not quote a crossing time, because nobody honestly can. What we can say is that the drive itself is short, the inspection is the variable, and an extra half hour of slack before a booked table costs you very little. If the bridge is quiet, you get an unhurried stroll along the river before dinner. If it is busy, you still make your reservation.

The US-side hotels, and where each one sits

Most of the hotels couples choose are clustered within a few blocks of Niagara Falls State Park and the Rainbow Bridge approach.

  • Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino, 310 4th Street: the large casino hotel, with its own restaurants.
  • Hyatt Place Niagara Falls, on Old Falls Street at 310 Rainbow Boulevard South, as listed by Destination Niagara USA.
  • DoubleTree by Hilton Niagara Falls, 401 Buffalo Avenue, downtown.
  • The Sheraton at 300 Third Street, which the owner's site calls Sheraton At The Falls and the tourism office calls Sheraton Niagara Falls.
  • Wyndham Garden at Niagara Falls, 443 Main Street.
  • Comfort Inn "The Pointe", 1 Prospect Pointe, right beside the State Park.
  • The Giacomo, a 41-room boutique hotel in a historic landmark building.

From the Old Falls Street area, the Hilton on Fallsview Boulevard is about 3.3 km by road and Table Rock about 5 km. Our Niagara Falls NY hotels page has pickup notes for each property.

Five Canadian-side tables worth the crossing

The point of crossing is the view, so choose a table that delivers one.

  1. Skylon Tower Revolving Dining Room. 775 ft above the Falls, turning once an hour. Skylon says reservations are highly recommended, especially for dinner, and a meal includes the elevator ride and observation deck. See our Skylon Tower page and the journal post on Skylon Tower dinner nights by limousine.
  2. Table Rock House Restaurant. Niagara Parks calls it "the closest you can dine to the Canadian Horseshoe Falls", at 6650 Niagara Parkway, booked through OpenTable (Niagara Parks).
  3. Queen Victoria Place Restaurant. Views of both the American and Horseshoe Falls, with a patio; seasonal, April to October.
  4. Massimo's Italian Fallsview Restaurant. Chef Massimo Capra's room on the Fallsview Dining Level of the Sheraton Fallsview Hotel, 5875 Falls Avenue.
  5. AG Inspired Cuisine. Farm-to-table dinners at 5195 Magdalen Avenue, at the Sterling Inn & Spa; no falls view, but a quiet, serious kitchen.

Our Niagara Falls restaurants guide has more choices by mood and budget,, and our post on Rainbow Bridge wait times and how to read them before you leave the hotel helps you pick the moment to go.

Matching dinner to the light

The best crossing time depends on what you want to see over dinner, not just when you are hungry.

  • Illumination. The Falls are lit every night of the year. Niagara Parks says the lights come on between 4:30 p.m. in November and December and 8:30 p.m. from mid-May to the end of July. An autumn or winter dinner gets the coloured falls with the main course.
  • Fireworks. In 2026 the Falls fireworks ran nightly at 10 p.m. from May 15 to October 12. A 7:30 or 8 p.m. table finishes in time to walk to Queen Victoria Park. Our illumination and fireworks page explains where to stand.
  • Winter Festival of Lights. From November 14, 2026 to January 10, 2027 the displays are lit nightly from 5 p.m. to midnight. A slow drive past the lights after dinner is a lovely end to the evening.

Reserve your dinner crossing

The crossing, both ways

Going into Canada, you will pass through a CBSA inspection at the Canadian end of the Rainbow Bridge. Each of you needs a valid document; CBSA recommends a passport for US citizens. Coming back into the United States after dinner, you will see a CBP officer, and the same rule applies. Our Rainbow Bridge page covers lanes and approaches.

CBP's wait-time data lists the Rainbow Bridge as open 24 hours, so a late dessert is not a problem in principle. What changes is the queue. Canada-bound waits are published by CBSA on its border wait times page; US-bound waits by CBP on bwt.cbp.gov. Your chauffeur checks both. For more on reading those numbers, see our border wait times page and the journal post on Canada-to-US waits heading home southbound.

A sample summer evening, hour by hour

This is the shape we suggest to couples staying on Old Falls Street in July, when the fireworks run and the light lingers. Adjust the times to your own reservation.

  • 6:15 p.m. The car meets you at the hotel entrance. Passports in hand, not in the suitcase upstairs.
  • 6:20 p.m. Onto the Rainbow Bridge approach. The drive across takes a few minutes; the inspection takes what it takes.
  • Before dinner. If the queue was short, the chauffeur sets you down at Table Rock for a walk along the railing above the Horseshoe Falls. If it was long, you go straight to the table.
  • 7:30 p.m. Dinner. The car waits nearby or returns at an agreed time.
  • 9:45 p.m. A short walk or ride to Queen Victoria Park for the 10 p.m. fireworks.
  • 10:20 p.m. Back in the car, back over the bridge, back at the hotel.

In autumn and winter the same plan starts later and swaps fireworks for illumination, which begins much earlier in the evening. CBSA notes that holiday long weekends are among the busiest times at the border, so we keep the same margin all year.

Wine with dinner, and the ride home

This is where a chauffeur matters most. If you plan a bottle of Niagara VQA wine with the meal, neither of you should be driving back over an international bridge. We do the driving, and you simply walk out of the restaurant to a waiting car.

Two points to know. First, nobody drinks inside our vehicles, before or after dinner; Niagara Region's by-law forbids it and Ontario law requires liquor in a car to be sealed or packed away. Second, if you buy a bottle to take back to the US, US residents returning after less than 48 hours have a $200 exemption that may include 150 ml of alcohol, per CBP. Anything more is declared at the booth.

The verdict: on a summer evening, walking across and eating near the bottom of Clifton Hill is a fine night out if you are both happy to walk back late. A taxi is fine one way. Where a pre-booked car wins is the round trip: a dinner reservation at Fallsview, a bottle of wine, a late finish and a border to clear on the way home. That is precisely the situation in which you do not want to search for a car that may not be allowed to cross. Our chauffeur vs taxi vs rideshare guide covers more cases.

Who this evening suits

Couples are the natural fit: one table, one view, one car home. Individuals travelling for work at a US-side hotel often cross for a solo dinner at the Skylon. Families staying in New York can use the same plan for an early dinner and the illumination, with child seats in the car. Groups celebrating something can book a Sprinter for up to 12, though larger tables need early reservations on the Canadian side. More ideas live on our couples page.

Frequently asked questions

Which hotels in Niagara Falls NY are closest to the Rainbow Bridge?

The Old Falls Street and Prospect Street area hotels are a few blocks from the bridge approach: Hyatt Place on Old Falls Street, Comfort Inn The Pointe beside the State Park, Seneca Niagara Resort on 4th Street and the Sheraton on Third Street. From there, Fallsview is about 3–5 km by road.

How long does it take to drive from Niagara Falls NY to the Skylon Tower?

From the Old Falls Street hotels, the Skylon Tower is about 3.5 km by road, roughly 8–10 minutes of driving. The border inspection on the Rainbow Bridge is extra and can be short or long, so leave a generous margin before a dinner reservation.

Is the Rainbow Bridge open late at night for the return?

CBP's wait-time data lists the Rainbow Bridge as open 24 hours a day. A late dinner is therefore no problem in principle, although queues vary. Your chauffeur checks the US-bound wait before leaving the restaurant and chooses the moment to go.

Do I need a passport to have dinner in Canada and return to my US hotel?

CBSA recommends a valid passport for US citizens entering Canada. To come back into the US by land, US citizens may use a passport, passport card, enhanced driver's licence or trusted traveller card. International guests should carry their passport and confirm their US entry status before crossing.

Can we bring a bottle of wine from dinner back to the US?

Yes, if you declare it. CBP says US residents returning after less than 48 hours have a $200 exemption that may include 150 ml of alcohol; more is declared and may be charged. In our cars the bottle stays sealed and packed away; nobody drinks on board.

Should we book the return at the same time as the outbound?

Yes. Book a round trip or "By the hour" so the car is already arranged when dinner ends. Finding a vehicle willing to cross the border at 11 p.m. is the hard part of this evening, and a pre-booked return removes it. The booker shows the fixed fare before you pay.

Which Canadian restaurants have a view of both falls?

Queen Victoria Place Restaurant looks at both the American and Horseshoe Falls and is open April to October. The Skylon Revolving Dining Room sees everything as it turns. Table Rock House sits at the brink of the Horseshoe Falls itself.
