Falls Incline Railway: Connecting Fallsview to Table Rock

A one-minute ride on a short funicular saves the steep walk between the Fallsview hotels and the brink of the Horseshoe Falls. Here is how it works, what it costs, when it closes, and when a car to the Table Rock door makes more sense.

Niagara Falls, Ontario, is built on two levels. The hotel towers of Fallsview stand on the bluff above the river; the Horseshoe Falls, Table Rock Centre and the Niagara Parkway are at the bottom of the slope. Between them is a hill that looks short on a map and feels long on the way back up after dinner. The Falls Incline Railway was built to solve exactly that.

It is one of the most useful rides in town and one of the least understood. Visitors miss it because they do not know where the top station is; others walk the hill because they assume it is closed; a few take a taxi for a trip the Incline does in a minute. At NiagaraFallsLimo.net we drop guests at both ends of it every week, and we also tell plenty of them they do not need us for this hop. Here is the full picture.

What is the Falls Incline Railway and where does it run?

The Falls Incline Railway is a Niagara Parks funicular that links the Fallsview tourist area, at 7001 Portage Road, with Table Rock Centre beside the Horseshoe Falls in about a minute. It runs year-round except for a short winter closure. For door-to-door rides instead, NiagaraFallsLimo.net drops at Table Rock; book online at a fixed fare.

Niagara Parks describes the Incline as a fully accessible, climate-controlled link between the Fallsview area and Table Rock Centre, with views of the Horseshoe Falls as the cars climb and descend. At the bottom, riders reach the Bridge of Flowers, the pedestrian crossing over the Niagara Parkway into Table Rock Centre, so you never step into traffic. Details are on the official Falls Incline Railway page.

A short history and a few numbers

The original railway was built in 1966. In 2013 Niagara Parks installed a new, fully accessible system, heated in winter and cooled in summer, which is why it can run through the year. According to Niagara Parks' Incline Railway upgrades page, nearly 1.3 million people ride it each year, about 800,000 of them in the peak season. The same page notes that Canada has five operating incline railways, and two of them are on Niagara Parks property.

Those ridership figures tell you something practical: on a July afternoon you will share it. Expect a short line in summer peaks and an almost empty car on a weekday in February.

Falls Incline Railway fares, passes and the winter closure

As of 2026, Niagara Parks lists Incline fares, the same for all ages, at CA$4 one way, CA$8 round trip and CA$10 for an all-day pass, with children aged 2 and under riding free. If you are buying a Niagara Falls Pass anyway, unlimited Incline rides are included alongside WEGO bus access, per the Niagara Parks deals page.

The one gap in the year is a scheduled winter maintenance closure; the current notice lists January 19 to February 13. During that window, Niagara Parks runs a WEGO shuttle from the top of the railway to Table Rock Centre during regular operating hours, so you are not left at the top of the hill.

Finding the top station

The address is 7001 Portage Road, on the Fallsview side, set back from the main hotel strip on Fallsview Boulevard. If you are staying in one of the Fallsview hotels, ask the front desk for the walking route; for most towers it is a few minutes on foot. From the top station the cars descend the slope in roughly a minute to the Parkway level and the Bridge of Flowers.

From Table Rock it works in reverse. Walk back across the Bridge of Flowers from Table Rock Centre and the lower station is in front of you. This is the leg where the Incline earns its fare: the climb on foot is steep, and after Journey Behind the Falls, a late dinner or the fireworks most people would rather sit for sixty seconds.

Small habits that make the ride easier

  • Buy the right ticket at the start. If you expect to go down and back more than once, for instance an afternoon at Table Rock and a return for the fireworks, the all-day fare beats two round trips.
  • Ride down early, ride up late. Mornings are quiet at the top station. The busiest moments tend to be just after the fireworks, when much of Queen Victoria Park heads back uphill at once; waiting ten minutes at Table Rock with a hot drink often beats the first rush.
  • Keep the stroller open. The cars are accessible, so there is no need to fold a stroller or wheelchair for the ride.
  • Mind the winter dates. If your trip falls between mid-January and mid-February, plan on the WEGO shuttle that replaces the Incline during its maintenance window.
  • Do not bring luggage down. The Incline is a sightseeing link, not a transfer; leave suitcases at the hotel or in the car.

Where a car can drop you instead

Sometimes the Incline is not the right tool. The common cases we see:

  • Your hotel is not near the top station. Guests on Lundy's Lane, near Clifton Hill or at a Niagara-on-the-Lake inn have no reason to reach Portage Road first. A car goes straight to Table Rock Centre at 6650 Niagara Parkway.
  • Someone cannot manage the walk to the upper station. The Incline itself is accessible, but the approach from some hotels involves sidewalks, curbs and crowds. A car can set passengers down at Table Rock and collect them there.
  • You are arriving from the airport or a long drive. Coming in from Buffalo Niagara International, about 40–45 km (25–28 mi) and usually 40–50 minutes plus the bridge, many guests drop bags at the hotel and go straight to the Falls.
  • It is late and wet. On a cold night after the fireworks, a car waiting near Table Rock is simply warmer than a queue.

By road, Fallsview to Table Rock is about 3 km (2 mi), around 6–8 minutes, because cars have to follow the one-way streets and the Parkway rather than drop straight down the slope. Parking at the Falls is in the gated Niagara Parks Falls lot (Lot A) across from Table Rock, which is open all year with variable rates and no overnight parking, per the Niagara Parks parking page. A chauffeured car avoids that lot entirely: it sets you down, waits nearby, and returns when you are ready.

The honest verdict: if you are staying in Fallsview and can walk a few minutes to Portage Road, take the Incline. It is quicker, accessible and costs a few dollars; booking a car for this hop alone makes little sense. A taxi is fine when it is raining and your hotel is a little further away. Where a pre-booked chauffeur wins is when Table Rock is one stop in a longer day: the gorge, the Floral Showhouse, dinner across town, or a family with a stroller and a grandparent who should not be standing in a line. For the wider comparison, see our guide to chauffeur vs taxi vs rideshare.

What is at the bottom when you arrive

The Table Rock area packs several attractions within a few minutes' walk of the lower station:

  • Journey Behind the Falls, on the first floor of the Table Rock Welcome Centre, takes you 125 ft down into tunnels with portals behind the Horseshoe Falls. Our page on Journey Behind the Falls and the journal post on planning a Journey Behind the Falls visit cover timing.
  • Niagara Takes Flight, the flying-theatre ride on the second floor of the Welcome Centre, takes about 35 minutes for the full experience.
  • The Niagara Parks Power Station, at 7005 Niagara Parkway, sits between Table Rock and the Floral Showhouse, with its tunnel to the river's edge.
  • The brink railing itself, where most of the classic photographs of the Horseshoe Falls are taken.

Who it suits

Individuals staying in Fallsview can treat the Incline as a free-feeling shuttle, especially with an all-day ticket. Couples often ride down for the 10 pm fireworks in season and back up afterwards rather than climbing in the dark. Families with strollers benefit most from the accessible cars; for broader planning see our notes for families visiting Niagara. Groups larger than a carload may split between the Incline and a Sprinter if some members have luggage or limited mobility. For anyone in a wheelchair, our accessible transportation page explains how to request a suitable vehicle for the parts of the day the Incline does not cover.

Booking it with NiagaraFallsLimo.net in 3 steps

  1. Choose your stops. Enter your hotel, Table Rock Centre and anything else on the day's plan; pick "By the hour" if the car should wait.
  2. Compare the vehicles. Each class, from a sedan for three to a Sprinter for twelve, shows its fixed all-in fare.
  3. Finish the booking. Add passengers, a stroller or wheelchair, child seats, then pay securely; the confirmation arrives by email.

It takes a few minutes on the booker, and if your day is only Fallsview to Table Rock and back, the Incline will serve you well. Our post on walking vs riding along Fallsview Boulevard looks at the rest of the hotel strip.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the ride on the Falls Incline Railway?

Niagara Parks describes it as a one-minute, fully accessible ride between the Fallsview tourist area and Table Rock Centre. Allow extra time to walk to the top station from your hotel and, in summer, for a short line at either end.

How much does the Falls Incline Railway cost?

As of 2026, Niagara Parks lists CA$4 one way, CA$8 round trip and CA$10 for an all-day pass, the same for all ages, with children 2 and under free. Unlimited rides are also included in the Niagara Falls Pass.

Is the Falls Incline Railway open in winter?

Yes, it runs year-round because the 2013 system is heated and cooled, but it closes for a few weeks of winter maintenance; the current notice lists January 19 to February 13. During that closure a WEGO shuttle runs from the top of the railway to Table Rock Centre.

Where is the top station of the Incline?

The listed address is 7001 Portage Road, on the Fallsview side above the Niagara Parkway. Most Fallsview hotel guests can walk there in a few minutes; ask your front desk for the best route from your tower.

Is the Incline wheelchair accessible?

Yes. Niagara Parks says the current railway, installed in 2013, is fully accessible and climate-controlled. The lower station connects to the Bridge of Flowers, which carries pedestrians over the Niagara Parkway into Table Rock Centre without crossing traffic.

Can a car drop us at Table Rock instead?

Yes. A chauffeured car can set you down at Table Rock Centre, 6650 Niagara Parkway, and wait nearby. By road the trip from Fallsview is about 3 km, usually 6–8 minutes, because cars follow the one-way streets and the Parkway.

Is it worth taking a taxi from Fallsview to the Falls?

Usually not, if you can walk to the Incline. It is faster and costs less. A taxi or a pre-booked car makes sense in heavy rain, late at night, for guests staying away from the top station, or when Table Rock is one stop in a longer itinerary.
