Spa weekends have a particular rhythm. You want to arrive early enough to use the pools, late enough to avoid the worst of the traffic, and calm enough that the first hour at the spa is not spent recovering from the drive. For guests of the Pillar and Post Hotel & Spa in Niagara-on-the-Lake, getting that rhythm right mostly comes down to which airport you fly into and when you leave it. NiagaraFallsLimo.net runs both directions regularly, Toronto from the north-west and Buffalo from the south-east, and the details differ more than people expect.
How do you get to Pillar and Post from Toronto or Buffalo?
Pillar and Post, at 48 John Street West in Niagara-on-the-Lake, is about 120 km (75 mi) from Toronto Pearson, usually 1 h 35 – 1 h 55 off-peak, and about 58 km (36 mi) from Buffalo Niagara International, roughly an hour plus the border at Lewiston-Queenston. NiagaraFallsLimo.net books both online with a fixed fare shown before payment.
From downtown Toronto and Union Station the distance is similar, about 127 km. From Hamilton's John C. Munro airport it is about 79 km, usually 1 h 10 – 1 h 20.
The hotel in brief
Pillar and Post is one of the Vintage Hotels properties in Niagara-on-the-Lake, alongside the Prince of Wales and Queen's Landing. It occupies a restored 19th-century building on John Street West, a few minutes from Old Town and the Shaw Festival Theatre. Its own page lists:
- 122 guest rooms and suites;
- the 100 Fountain Spa, 13,000 square feet, with pools including a secluded hot spring pool;
- the Cannery Restaurant, Vintages Wine Bar & Lounge and The OutPost, an all-seasons garden café;
- complimentary on-site parking for guests.
That last point means some guests drive themselves. The case for a transfer is less about parking and more about the arrival itself: after a flight, after a working week, or after a border crossing, someone else does the QEW. Our Pillar and Post page has the entrance and luggage notes.
Arriving from Toronto
From Toronto Pearson (YYZ)
About 120 km (75 mi). At Pearson, pre-booked cars collect from Door A at either terminal, 1 or 3; if you add meet and greet, the chauffeur stands inside arrivals with your name on a board instead. The chauffeur takes Highway 427 to the QEW, crosses the Burlington Skyway, passes St. Catharines and leaves the highway at the Niagara-on-the-Lake exit, then follows Niagara Stone Road through Virgil into town.
Off-peak, allow 1 h 35 – 1 h 55. On a summer Friday between about 2 and 7 p.m., allow 2 h 15 or more; the QEW through Oakville, Burlington and the Skyway is the usual bottleneck. We track your flight, so a late landing simply moves the pickup. For airport detail, see the Toronto Pearson transfer page, and the post on Pearson to NOTL inns goes deeper on the airport side.
From downtown Toronto
About 127 km from Union Station, with similar timing. Hotel pickups downtown are straightforward; give us the hotel and we meet you at the main entrance. Our Toronto to Niagara-on-the-Lake route page has more.
Is the train an option?
Honestly, partly. GO trains and VIA Rail both stop at the shared Niagara Falls station on Bridge Street, but Niagara-on-the-Lake has no train station. From the Niagara Falls station, Pillar and Post is still about 20 km by road, so you need a car for the last leg. For a solo traveller with one bag, train plus a short transfer is perfectly reasonable. For a couple with spa-weekend luggage, a door-to-door ride is usually simpler. Our post on Toronto to Niagara-on-the-Lake without driving compares the options.

Arriving from Buffalo
The route
From Buffalo Niagara International (BUF), the chauffeur heads north on the interstate network and I-190 past Niagara Falls, New York, to the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge, then the short run down the Niagara Parkway or York Road into town. The distance is about 58 km (36 mi), roughly an hour of driving, plus the Canadian inspection. From downtown Buffalo it is about 57 km and slightly quicker on the road.
Why Lewiston-Queenston
For Niagara-on-the-Lake, Lewiston-Queenston is the natural crossing: it lands you a few minutes from town. The Niagara Falls Bridge Commission lists 10 car lanes into Canada and a Canada-bound NEXUS lane that runs daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., reached from the US via I-190 or Route 104. The toll is charged only entering Canada, and at this bridge the booth is on the Canadian side.
Two practical notes. First, the NEXUS lane can be used only if every person in the vehicle, including the chauffeur, is a NEXUS member carrying their card; a mixed car uses the regular lanes. Second, nobody can tell you in advance how long the inspection will take. We check the live wait before reaching the bridge and, when another crossing is clearly quicker, we take it. See our Lewiston-Queenston Bridge page.
Documents
Every passenger needs their own valid documents. The Canada Border Services Agency recommends that US citizens carry a valid passport, though it lists alternatives such as an enhanced driver's licence (CBSA). Travellers from other countries should carry their passport and any visa they need; visitors from eTA-required countries generally do not need an eTA when arriving by land. Our documents for entering Canada page and the post on Buffalo Airport to NOTL via the Lewiston bridge cover the details.
Two other airports worth knowing
Hamilton (YHM). John C. Munro Hamilton International is about 79 km (49 mi) from Pillar and Post, usually 1 h 10 – 1 h 20. Porter Airlines and WestJet serve it, and the airport says shuttle and limousine service must be arranged in advance with the provider, so book before you fly. For guests from Western Canada on a WestJet flight, it is often the shortest door-to-door option.
Billy Bishop Toronto City (YTZ). The island airport downtown is about 125–130 km from Niagara-on-the-Lake, similar to Pearson in time but with a different pickup: most passengers walk the pedestrian tunnel to the mainland pavilion, where pre-booked cars meet them on the mainland side. Since March 2026 it also offers US preclearance for US-bound flights, which helps on the way home if you are flying to the United States.
Bridge tolls, for those who drive themselves
If part of your party drives from Buffalo, the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission lists the car toll into Canada at US$6.00 or CA$8.50 as of 2026, effective May 1, 2025. There is no toll entering the United States, and pennies are no longer accepted at its toll points. Travelling with us, the crossing is simply part of the trip.
Timing a spa weekend arrival
A few patterns work well for Pillar and Post guests:
- Thursday-evening or Friday-morning arrivals dodge the Friday afternoon QEW rush from Toronto.
- From Buffalo, a late-morning crossing on a weekday is often quieter than a Friday evening; holiday long weekends are the busiest times at the border.
- Book spa treatments with a cushion. If your treatment is at 4 p.m., plan to arrive by 2 p.m. rather than 3:30.
- Book the return when you book the arrival. A Sunday afternoon departure for an evening flight from Pearson needs a pickup around 2 to 3 p.m. for international flights.
Once you are there, Old Town is close. The Shaw Festival's Festival Theatre and Court House Theatre are a short walk or a two-minute drive; Trius Winery on Niagara Stone Road is about 2 km. The Horseshoe Falls are about 25 km away, roughly 33 minutes along the Parkway, which many guests save for a separate afternoon.
Chauffeur vs rideshare vs taxi for this trip
| Option | Door-to-door from Pearson | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private chauffeur | About 1 h 35 – 1 h 55 off-peak | Fixed fare via booker | 2 to 6 bags by class | Couples and families with spa-weekend luggage |
| Rideshare | Similar drive time | App pricing, surge possible | Depends on car | Light travellers from Toronto |
| Taxi | Similar drive time | Metered or airport flat rate | Trunk only | One-way from Pearson |
| GO or VIA to Niagara Falls plus taxi | Often 2 h 30 or more | Published public fares | Manageable with one bag | Solo travellers |
| From Buffalo by rideshare | About 1 h plus border | App pricing | Depends on car | Only if the driver confirms the crossing |
| Rental car | About 1 h 35 – 1 h 55 plus pickup | Daily rate, free hotel parking | Plenty | Guests planning many drives |
Our verdict: from Toronto, a taxi or rideshare is a reasonable choice for a traveller with little luggage who is happy to arrange it on landing. From Buffalo, the border is the deciding factor: a pre-booked car that is expected to cross removes the one real risk of the trip. For couples arriving for a spa weekend, and for anyone who wants the return already settled, the pre-booked transfer is the calmer start. Our guide to booking a limo explains what to have ready.

Who this suits
Couples on spa weekends make up most of these bookings, and a quiet sedan suits them. Families visiting for a wedding or a reunion use an SUV with child seats from Pearson. Groups attending events at the hotel can travel together in an Executive Sprinter, carry-on bags only, or in linked SUVs when luggage is heavier. Individuals on business often fly into Buffalo or Hamilton and want the border handled. For other inns nearby, see our Niagara-on-the-Lake inns page.
Frequently asked questions
Can we fly into Hamilton for a Pillar and Post weekend?
Yes. Hamilton's John C. Munro airport is about 79 km from the hotel, usually 1 h 10 – 1 h 20 by car, and is served by Porter and WestJet. The airport notes that limousine service is not regularly scheduled, so pre-book the transfer with your flight number.
How far is Pillar and Post from Toronto?
About 120 km (75 mi) from Toronto Pearson and about 127 km from Union Station downtown. Off-peak, the drive usually takes 1 h 35 – 1 h 55 via the QEW; on summer Friday afternoons, allow 2 h 15 or more.
What is the best way to get from Buffalo Airport to Niagara-on-the-Lake?
A pre-booked car that crosses at the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge is the most direct: about 58 km (36 mi), roughly an hour plus the Canadian inspection. Each passenger needs valid documents. Rideshare drivers from Buffalo may not be able or willing to cross, so confirm before relying on one.
Is there a train to Niagara-on-the-Lake?
No. The nearest stations are Niagara Falls, served by GO Transit and VIA Rail, and St. Catharines. From Niagara Falls station, Pillar and Post is about 20 km by road, so you still need a car, taxi or transfer for the final leg.
Does Pillar and Post have parking if we drive?
Yes. The hotel's page states that on-site parking is complimentary for guests. Many guests still prefer a transfer for the arrival and departure, especially after a flight or a border crossing, and use the car service only for a winery day.
Which bridge should we use from Buffalo to Pillar and Post?
Usually Lewiston-Queenston, which lands a few minutes from Niagara-on-the-Lake. If the live wait there is clearly longer than at the Rainbow Bridge, the chauffeur may choose the other crossing. The toll is charged only entering Canada; the chauffeur handles the crossing with you on board.
Can we book the return trip at the same time?
Yes. Add the return to the booking with its own date, time and flight number. The booker shows the fixed fare for each leg before you pay, and the cancellation terms are counted from each scheduled pickup.
