Couples have been running away to marry at Niagara Falls for generations, and the logistics are friendlier than most people expect. There is no residency rule in the City of Niagara Falls marriage licence requirements, a licence can be issued in about half an hour when the paperwork is right, and City Hall performs civil ceremonies on weekdays. Put that together with a car and driver who stay with you, and a Niagara Falls elopement becomes one well-paced day rather than a weekend of errands.
This guide is the day plan we would hand a couple who rang the NiagaraFallsLimo.net reservations desk and said, "We want to marry on Thursday, just the two of us, maybe a photographer."
Can you elope at Niagara Falls in a single day?
Yes. In Niagara Falls, Ontario you can get a marriage licence at City Hall, 4310 Queen Street, and marry the same day if your documents are in order. City Hall is about 4 km (3 mi), roughly 8–12 minutes, from the Fallsview hotels. NiagaraFallsLimo.net books one chauffeured car by the hour for the whole day through its online booker.
The City's own marriage licence page says a same-day licence and ceremony is possible but asks couples to allow plenty of time, because a problem with ID can add hours or lead to a refusal. Plan the day so the licence appointment is the first thing you do, not something squeezed in before a 2 p.m. ceremony.
Before you travel: the three things to sort at home
- Both of you complete the online application. The City asks both parties to fill in and sign the online form before the appointment and save it, so staff can retrieve it when you arrive.
- Pack the right ID. Each person needs two pieces of original identification: one must be a birth certificate or passport, the other government-issued photo ID such as a driver's licence. Health cards are not accepted.
- Check for a previous divorce. If either of you was divorced outside Canada, the documents have to be validated through ServiceOntario first, which the City says can take up to four weeks. That cannot be done on the day.
The full licence process, fees and remarriage rules are in our companion post on the Niagara Falls marriage licence and City Hall steps.
9:15 a.m. The car arrives
Your chauffeur meets you at your hotel entrance. For an elopement most couples choose a Mercedes-Benz E or S-Class, a Mercedes-Maybach or a Rolls-Royce. All three carry up to two passengers, which is exactly the point, and the Maybach and Rolls-Royce are confirmed at booking. If a photographer is joining for the whole day, a Standard SUV or Executive Black SUV (up to 6) lets everyone ride together.
Book the car "By the hour" rather than as separate trips. It costs you nothing in flexibility: the driver waits outside City Hall, waits at each photo stop and leaves when you are ready. Our hourly chauffeur service explains how an hourly booking works.
9:30 a.m. Licence appointment at City Hall
City Hall is at 4310 Queen Street in the older downtown of Niagara Falls, a short drive north of the tourist district. Licence appointments are booked by phone with the Clerk's Department, Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., excluding holidays.
Practical points for visiting couples:
- Payment is cash or Canadian debit only. The licence fee is CA$160 as of 2026 on the City's schedule of fees. Couples from the US or overseas should withdraw Canadian cash beforehand, because a foreign credit card will not do.
- The licence is valid for 90 days anywhere in Ontario. If you change your mind about the venue, it still works.
- Nobody can pick it up for you. The City does not allow a third party to collect the licence.
11:00 a.m. The ceremony
You have three realistic choices for an elopement-sized ceremony.
A civil ceremony at City Hall. The City Clerk performs civil marriages Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., in the Council Chambers or outside when the weather allows. Two witnesses are required, and the City can provide them. Fees effective 1 January 2026 are CA$750 plus HST for non-residents and CA$450 plus HST for Niagara Falls residents, paid in full to reserve the date. Photos and video are allowed if they do not disrupt the ceremony; confetti, rice and bubbles are not. One timing note for this autumn: the civil ceremonies page says no ceremonies are offered from 14 September to 30 October 2026 because of the municipal election.
A Niagara Parks garden or chapel. Niagara Parks sells ceremony packages that include an officiant and a two-hour site rental at locations such as Dufferin Islands, the Floral Showhouse and the 1862 Queenston Chapel. These are booked through its weddings team well ahead.
A private chapel. Several privately run chapels in the city cater to elopements. Check what each includes, especially whether the officiant is registered and who supplies witnesses.
Book your chauffeur for the day
Noon. Photos where the river is the backdrop
With the paperwork done, the day becomes yours. A loop that works well from City Hall:
- Oakes Garden Theatre and Queen Victoria Park, about 2.6 km from City Hall. Formal gardens and a curved pergola facing the American Falls. The chauffeur drops at the nearest legal stopping point and waits.
- Table Rock and the Horseshoe Falls brink, a little farther south along the Parkway. Expect crowds at midday in summer.
- Dufferin Islands, about 3 km beyond, with footbridges and quiet water. A good antidote to the crowds.
Niagara Parks says no permit is needed to take photos at its outdoor locations, but asks visitors to respect ceremonies in progress. For a fuller list, with drive times between stops, see wedding photo locations reachable by limo.
2:00 p.m. North along the Niagara Parkway
After lunch, the car takes the Niagara Parkway north. The Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens are about 8 km from the Fallsview district, 99 acres of plantings with the Butterfly Conservatory inside; our Niagara Glen and Botanical Gardens page covers parking and timing. A few minutes farther is the Floral Clock, 40 ft across, then the village of Queenston.
From the Botanical Gardens to Old Town Niagara-on-the-Lake is about 15 km (10 mi), roughly 20–25 minutes. Many eloping couples end the day there with an early dinner on Queen Street and a walk by the lake.
Evening. Dinner, and the ride back
Old Town Niagara-on-the-Lake to the Fallsview hotels is about 23 km (15 mi), usually 30–40 minutes. If you are staying in Niagara-on-the-Lake, your evening is a short drop to the inn door instead.
If you would like a bottle to mark the occasion, add a sealed one in the booker as a gift to take away. Nobody drinks in our vehicles: Niagara Region's vehicle-for-hire by-law does not let a licensed driver permit it, and we follow it to the letter. Toast at dinner; the chauffeur takes you home.
Chauffeur vs rideshare vs taxi for this trip
An elopement day is a string of short hops with waits in between, which is the case where an hourly car makes most sense, and also where a taxi can quietly cover a single leg.
| Way to go | Door-to-door time | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chauffeur by the hour (NiagaraFallsLimo.net) | Car waits at every stop | Fixed fare via booker, shown before you pay | Dress bag, flowers, camera kit | The whole day, photos, wine-country dinner |
| Rideshare | New match at each stop | App estimate; surge pricing at busy times | Whatever car arrives | One short hop on a quiet weekday |
| Taxi | Dispatch wait each time | Metered | Sedan or minivan | A single leg, e.g. hotel to City Hall |
| WEGO visitor bus | Fixed route with stops | WEGO pass | What you carry | Sightseeing the day before or after |
| Driving yourself | Drive plus parking at each stop | Fuel and paid parking | Own trunk | Couples happy to park in a wedding outfit |
Verdict. If your plan is a 15-minute ceremony at City Hall and straight back to the hotel, a taxi for each leg is honest value and we would say so. Once photos, the Parkway and a dinner are involved, a chauffeur by the hour wins: one car, one driver, no app between stops, and nobody hunting for parking in a suit. Our chauffeur vs taxi vs rideshare guide goes into the wider comparison.
Who it suits
Elopements are mostly about couples, and our couples page has more ideas for a day at the Falls. Individuals sometimes book the car as a surprise for a partner, with the destination kept quiet until the morning. Families who join at the last minute, a parent or two as witnesses, fit in an SUV. Small groups of friends tagging along turn an elopement into a micro wedding, and the vehicle choice changes accordingly.
Booking it with NiagaraFallsLimo.net in 3 steps
- Choose "By the hour" in the online booker and enter your hotel as the pickup, with the start time and the number of hours. Mention City Hall and Niagara-on-the-Lake in the notes.
- Select the car. The S-Class, Maybach and Rolls-Royce each show their fixed fare for your hours before you pay.
- Add the finishing details. Passenger names, a photographer if joining, a sealed bottle as a take-away gift if you want one, then pay securely. The confirmation arrives by email.

Frequently asked questions
Do we need to be Canadian residents to elope in Niagara Falls?
The City of Niagara Falls does not set a residency requirement for a marriage licence. Visitors need the same documents as residents: two pieces of original ID each, one a birth certificate or passport. City Hall ceremony fees are higher for non-residents, CA$750 plus HST as of 2026.
Can we get the licence and marry on the same day?
Yes, the City says it is possible, but it advises allowing ample time because document problems can add hours or lead to a refusal. Book the licence appointment early in the morning and the ceremony for late morning or early afternoon.
Who can be our witnesses?
A civil marriage needs two witnesses. For ceremonies at City Hall, the City can provide them, or you can bring your own. If you marry at a private chapel or a Niagara Parks site, confirm with the officiant or venue who supplies witnesses.
Are City Hall ceremonies available every day?
Civil ceremonies run Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., excluding holidays, and can be booked up to six months ahead. No ceremonies are offered from 14 September to 30 October 2026 because of the municipal election.
Which car is best for an elopement?
Most couples choose a Mercedes-Benz E or S-Class, a Mercedes-Maybach or a Rolls-Royce, each for up to two passengers, with the Maybach and Rolls-Royce subject to availability at booking. If a photographer rides with you, an SUV for up to six is more practical.
Can the chauffeur take photos of us?
The chauffeur can hold doors, carry a dress bag and wait while you shoot, but for photos you want to keep, book a professional or ask a friend. Our role is to get you to each spot on time and keep the car ready.
Can we cross to the American side for a photo?
You can, as long as both of you carry valid documents for entering the US and for returning to Canada. The chauffeur crosses with you, but crossing times vary and cannot be promised, so a border detour fits better on a day without fixed appointments.
