A wedding at the Falls has an unusual advantage for couples from New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio or Michigan: guests can fly into Buffalo, or simply drive, and still end up at a foreign destination with a view most people only see once. The trade-off is that every single guest crosses an international border, often twice, and the bride and groom have to deal with an Ontario licence office that takes Canadian cash. A Niagara Falls destination wedding for US couples works best when those border and paperwork details are settled months before the save-the-dates go out.
NiagaraFallsLimo.net drives couples and their guests across the bridges every week. This guide covers what we see go right and wrong: documents, airports, bridges, the licence and the wedding-weekend shuttle.
Can a US couple legally marry in Niagara Falls, Canada?
Yes. The City of Niagara Falls, Ontario does not set a residency requirement for a marriage licence, which is issued at City Hall, 4310 Queen Street. Buffalo Niagara International is about 43 km (27 mi) from the Fallsview hotels, usually 45 minutes to an hour plus border time. NiagaraFallsLimo.net books cross-border transfers in its online booker.
The City notes on its marriage licence page that American couples should allow for possible travel or bridge delays when booking a licence appointment. Take that literally: arrive the day before.
The paperwork for the couple
Start with these, in this order:
- Passports. The licence needs two original IDs each, one of them a birth certificate or passport, and a passport is also the simplest document at the border. Check expiry dates now.
- Any previous divorce. A divorce granted outside Canada, including in any US state, must be validated through ServiceOntario before the licence can be issued. Ontario says that can take up to four weeks and requires a legal opinion letter from an Ontario lawyer. This is the item most likely to derail a date, so start it first.
- Canadian cash or a Canadian debit card. The licence fee is CA$160 as of 2026 and the City accepts nothing else.
- The certificate afterwards. Order your marriage certificate from ServiceOntario after the wedding. For questions about recognition back home, such as name changes or benefits, ask your county clerk or an attorney in your state before you go.
Our step-by-step guide to the Niagara Falls marriage licence and City Hall covers each requirement in detail.
What your guests need at the border
Put this on the wedding website, near the top.
- US citizens entering Canada. The Canada Border Services Agency recommends a valid passport for US citizens of any age. A birth certificate, citizenship certificate or US enhanced driver's licence can prove citizenship, but the passport is simplest.
- Coming home to the US. Under the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative, US Customs and Border Protection accepts a US passport, passport card, enhanced driver's licence or trusted traveller card at land borders. A driver's licence alone does not work.
- Children. US citizen children under 16 need only a birth certificate or other proof of citizenship to re-enter the US by land. If a child travels without both parents, carry a consent letter; Canada does not legally require one, but officers can ask. Our crossing the border with children page explains what to bring.
- US permanent residents should carry their green card, plus a passport.
- Guests of other nationalities should check their own rules. Visa-required nationals still need a Canadian visitor visa when arriving by land.
- Cannabis must stay home. It is illegal to take it across the border in either direction.
Every passenger in our vehicles carries their own documents. The chauffeur crosses with you, but nobody can promise how long an inspection takes. Our documents for entering Canada and documents for entering the US pages go into more detail.
Which airport your guests should use
| Airport | Distance to Fallsview hotels | Typical drive | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Buffalo Niagara International (BUF) | About 43 km (27 mi) | 45 min – 1 h, plus border | The usual choice for US guests |
| Niagara Falls International (IAG), NY | About 14 km (9 mi) via the Rainbow Bridge | 20–30 min, plus border | Allegiant only in 2026, mostly Florida routes |
| Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester (ROC) | About 143 km (88 mi) | About 2 h, plus border | Useful for guests already in western New York |
| Toronto Pearson (YYZ) | About 121 km (75 mi) | 1 h 30 – 1 h 45 off-peak; 2 h+ summer Friday | Best for guests from overseas; no border to cross |
For most American guests, Buffalo is the answer. Our Buffalo airport transfer page explains the flight-tracked pickup and the drive to the bridges. Guests coming from Rochester or elsewhere upstate can read western New York guests crossing to Niagara venues.
Check a fixed fare from Buffalo
Which bridge, and what it costs to cross
From Buffalo, the chauffeur chooses between three crossings depending on traffic and where you are going.
- Peace Bridge, Buffalo to Fort Erie. Now cashless, card or E-ZPass only, according to the bridge authority.
- Rainbow Bridge, Niagara Falls NY to Niagara Falls ON, landing a few minutes from Clifton Hill and the Fallsview hotels. Our Rainbow Bridge page covers the approach.
- Lewiston-Queenston Bridge, farther north, convenient for Niagara-on-the-Lake venues.
Tolls are charged only entering Canada. The Niagara Falls Bridge Commission lists a passenger car at US$6.00 or CA$8.50 as of 2026. The Whirlpool Rapids Bridge is NEXUS-only, and a vehicle can use NEXUS lanes only when every occupant, including the driver, is a member; a guest shuttle almost never qualifies.
Money, taxes and tipping on the Canadian side
Prices in Ontario are in Canadian dollars, and most posted prices exclude the 13% Harmonized Sales Tax (HST), which is added at the till. US cards work at hotels, restaurants and shops, but some public offices do not take them: the marriage licence at City Hall is cash or Canadian debit only. A small amount of Canadian cash also helps for coat checks and incidentals. Our own fares are fixed and shown in the booker before you pay, so there is nothing to convert or calculate at the end of a ride.
Where US guests should stay
Some couples try to save money by booking guests into hotels on the New York side and shuttling them across on the wedding day. It can work, but it adds two border crossings to the most time-sensitive day of the trip, with every guest needing to bring a passport to the ceremony. Our honest advice: put the wedding guests on the same side as the venue, and save the American side for a day trip. If you do use Niagara Falls NY hotels, book a shuttle with a generous buffer and send the guest list with full names in advance.
The wedding weekend, leg by leg
A typical US-couple wedding weekend has four transport moments:
- Thursday or Friday arrivals from Buffalo, flight-tracked, with a meet-and-greet sign for guests who have never met the driver.
- Licence appointment at City Hall, about 4 km from the Fallsview hotels.
- The wedding day: hotel to ceremony, photos, reception, return. Our guide to moving guests between hotel, ceremony and reception covers this in detail.
- Sunday or Monday departures back across the border to BUF. Leave earlier than you think; long weekends are the busiest periods at the bridges.
For the cross-border legs, our cross-border car service explains how the chauffeur handles the bridge with you.
Chauffeur vs rideshare vs taxi for this trip
| Way to go | Door-to-door time | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pre-booked chauffeur (NiagaraFallsLimo.net) | BUF kerb to hotel door, bridge included | Fixed fare via booker, shown before you pay | Sedan 2 large; SUV 6; Sprinter carry-on only | Couples, families with car seats, guest groups |
| Rideshare | Varies; cross-border rides not always available | App estimate; surge pricing possible | Whatever car arrives | Local trips on one side of the border |
| Taxi | Dispatch wait, then the drive | Metered | Sedan or minivan | Short trips within Niagara Falls ON |
| Intercity bus | Scheduled, with border stop | Published fare | Standard bags | Solo guests on a budget |
| Rental car | Drive plus parking | Rental, fuel, tolls, parking | Own trunk | Guests touring before or after |
Verdict. Once guests are settled on the Canadian side, a taxi to a restaurant or a rideshare to Clifton Hill is perfectly fine. For the cross-border legs, a pre-booked chauffeur is the dependable choice: Niagara Falls International's own ground transportation page warns that rideshare services may not cross the border, and a car already booked from BUF does not depend on a driver accepting an international trip.
Who it suits
Couples use a sedan or Mercedes-Benz for their own arrival and the wedding day. Individuals flying in alone can book a single sedan from Buffalo. Families with young children need car seats, which are in the booker, and the right documents for each child. Groups of guests arriving on the same flight share a Sprinter or SUV, which keeps everyone together through the border inspection.
Booking it with NiagaraFallsLimo.net in 3 steps

Frequently asked questions
Do American couples need a special licence to marry in Niagara Falls, Ontario?
No. US couples use the same Ontario marriage licence as anyone else, issued by the City of Niagara Falls at City Hall. You each need two original IDs, one a birth certificate or passport, and the CA$160 fee as of 2026 in cash or Canadian debit.
Is it easier to marry on the US or Canadian side of Niagara Falls?
It depends on where your guests live and what you want to see. This guide covers the Canadian side, where the licence is issued by the City of Niagara Falls, Ontario. If you marry in Canada, every US guest crosses the border, so documents and bridge timing must be part of the plan.
How long does the drive from Buffalo airport to Niagara Falls, Canada take?
About 43 km (27 mi) to the Fallsview hotels, usually 45 minutes to an hour of driving plus time at the border inspection, which nobody can predict. Allow extra time on Friday afternoons and long weekends.
Do wedding guests need passports?
US citizens entering Canada are advised to carry a valid passport. To come home by land, they need a WHTI-compliant document: a passport, passport card, enhanced driver's licence or trusted traveller card. Children under 16 can use a birth certificate to re-enter the US by land.
Can our guest shuttle use the NEXUS lane?
Only when everyone on board, chauffeur included, holds a NEXUS card and has it with them. That is rare for a wedding shuttle, so plan for the regular lanes. NEXUS-member couples travelling in a car with a NEXUS-member driver can use them.
Should US guests stay in Niagara Falls, New York?
They can, but it adds border crossings on the wedding day itself. If the ceremony and reception are on the Canadian side, we suggest guests stay on the Canadian side too, and visit the American side on a separate day.
When should we arrive before the wedding?
At least two days before. That gives time for the weekday licence appointment, a buffer for any border delay, and a rehearsal or venue walk-through. If the wedding is on a Saturday, arrive by Thursday and book the City Hall appointment for Friday morning.
What do we pay at the bridge?
Tolls are charged only entering Canada. A passenger car pays US$6.00 or CA$8.50 at the Rainbow, Whirlpool Rapids and Lewiston-Queenston bridges as of 2026. When you travel with us, the route is part of your booking; the booker shows the fixed fare before you pay.
