Canadian Side Hotels vs US Side Hotels for a Niagara Trip

The two cities share one river and three bridges, but a hotel on each bank gives a family a very different trip. Here is how the views, the airports, the paperwork and the evening walk compare.

Stand at Prospect Point in New York and look across the gorge: the skyline you see on the far bank is Ontario's Fallsview district, a ridge of hotel towers facing the water. Stand at one of those towers' windows and you see the reverse, the American Falls and Goat Island, with the Horseshoe Falls curving away to your left. That difference in what each bank looks at is the starting point for choosing where a family should sleep.

NiagaraFallsLimo.net collects guests from hotels on both banks, often on the same morning, so we see the trade-offs from the kerb. Here they are in the order families usually weigh them.

Canadian side vs American side Niagara Falls hotels: which is better?

For views of both falls from your room, the Canadian side wins: Fallsview Boulevard hotels in Niagara Falls, Ontario face the Horseshoe and American Falls. US-side hotels sit beside Niagara Falls State Park, about 3 km (2 mi) away plus customs, and suit Buffalo flyers. NiagaraFallsLimo.net books transfers to either through its online booker.

The rest of this post explains the "it depends": the airport you land at, the passports in your family, the attractions on your list and how much walking your children will tolerate after dinner.

What you see from the window

On the Canadian side the big towers line Fallsview Boulevard and Falls Avenue, above the Horseshoe Falls. Many sell rooms graded by view, from city view to full falls view, and the higher floors look straight into the mist. Names you will see on any search include the Hilton Niagara Falls/Fallsview at 6361 Fallsview Boulevard, the Niagara Falls Marriott Fallsview Hotel & Spa at 6740, the Marriott on the Falls at 6755, and the former Embassy Suites at 6700, which became the Hyatt Regency Niagara Falls Fallsview on April 1, 2026. Niagara Falls Tourism's listing for the Hyatt Regency shows the current name and address. Down the hill, Falls Avenue has the Sheraton Fallsview Hotel at 5875 and The Brock Niagara Falls-Fallsview, Tapestry Collection by Hilton, at 5685.

On the US side most hotels are lower and sit back from the brink. They are close to the water rather than above it: Comfort Inn "The Pointe" is next to the State Park, Hyatt Place is on Old Falls Street, and the Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino tower is a short walk from the park. Destination Niagara USA's hotel guide also names the 41-room Giacomo, Courtyard Niagara Falls, Red Coach Inn and Holiday Inn Niagara Falls. What these hotels give up in panoramic room views, they gain in proximity to Goat Island, the Cave of the Winds and the Maid of the Mist dock.

Our area pages for Fallsview hotels and Niagara Falls, NY hotels list where cars stop at each property.

The airport decides more than people expect

A family flying into Buffalo Niagara International (BUF) and sleeping in Niagara Falls, New York never crosses a border: the drive to Old Falls Street is about 39 km (24 mi), roughly 40 minutes. The same family heading for a Fallsview hotel drives about 42 km (26 mi), usually 45 minutes, and then clears Canadian inspection at the Rainbow or Peace Bridge.

Flying into Toronto Pearson (YYZ) reverses it. A Fallsview hotel is about 121 km (75 mi), usually 1 h 30 – 1 h 45 off-peak with no border at all. A US-side hotel is a similar distance, about 122 km (76 mi), but adds a US inspection at the end of a long travel day. Our Buffalo Niagara airport page and the journal post comparing flying into Buffalo vs Toronto for Niagara Falls go into flight choice.

A simple rule we give families: sleep on the side of the border your plane lands on, unless the view matters more to you than a short first evening.

Passports, children and the bridge

Staying on one side and sightseeing on the other means a border inspection every time you cross. That is routine, but it needs the right papers for every person in the car.

  • Entering the US. For US and Canadian citizens, CBP's Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative page accepts a passport, passport card, enhanced driver's licence or NEXUS card at land crossings. Children under 16 who are US or Canadian citizens need only proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate. Other nationalities usually need a passport plus an ESTA or visa.
  • Entering Canada. The Canada Border Services Agency recommends a valid passport for US citizens of any age, though other proof of citizenship is accepted. Our documents for entering Canada page has the detail.
  • Travelling with one parent or with grandparents. Global Affairs Canada recommends a consent letter for any child under 19 who travels without both parents. Our crossing with children page explains what to put in it.

On tolls: the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission charges only on the way into Canada. As of 2026 its toll page lists US$6.00 or CA$8.50 for a car at the Rainbow, Whirlpool Rapids and Lewiston-Queenston bridges. Walkers pay a small toll too, and some families staying on the US side simply walk over; our post on walking across the Rainbow Bridge vs being driven covers that option.

The evening walk

This is where the Canadian side tends to win for families with children. From most Fallsview hotels you can walk to the railing to see the illuminated Falls, take the Falls Incline Railway down to Table Rock, or walk to Clifton Hill for dinner and the Niagara SkyWheel. Falls Avenue hotels connect indoors to Casino Niagara and Clifton Hill, and the Skyline Hotel & Waterpark sits in the same 20-acre resort.

On the US side the evening is quieter. Old Falls Street and the State Park are pleasant at night, the Falls are lit for both banks, and the view of the American Falls from Prospect Point is close and loud. But the panorama of the illuminated Horseshoe Falls is a Canadian-side view. Families who stay in New York often cross for one evening specifically to see it.

Currency, prices and how to compare fairly

We do not quote hotel rates, because they move every day with season and events. What we can tell you is how to compare:

  1. Compare the same dates in one currency. US-side hotels price in US dollars, Canadian-side hotels in Canadian dollars. Convert before you decide.
  2. Compare the final total. Taxes and resort or parking fees differ by hotel and by country. Look at the checkout figure, not the headline rate.
  3. Count parking. Several big hotels charge for parking by the night. If you arrive by chauffeur and walk everywhere, that cost disappears; our post on hotel parking fees vs a chauffeur runs the logic.
  4. Value the view honestly. A falls-view room on the Canadian side usually costs more than a city-view room in the same building. For a family that will be out all day, the city view and a ten-minute walk may be the better spend.

The verdict: if you are staying on one bank and sightseeing on the same bank, walk or take the WEGO, and use a taxi for the odd longer hop. A pre-booked car earns its place on the airport transfer, especially with luggage and car seats, and on any day that crosses the bridge, because the chauffeur stays with you through both inspections. Our cross-border car service page explains how that works, and the chauffeur vs taxi vs rideshare guide compares the options in general.

Booking it with NiagaraFallsLimo.net in 3 steps

  1. Enter the airport and the hotel. In the booker, type your terminal and your hotel by name, add the date, time and flight number. For a cross-border sightseeing day, choose "By the hour" or a multi-stop trip instead.
  2. Choose the vehicle that fits the family. A Standard SUV or Executive Black SUV carries up to six with six bags; an Executive Sprinter carries up to twelve with carry-on bags only. The fixed fare shows next to each.
  3. Add seats, passengers and pay. Request child, toddler or booster seats, list every passenger, pay securely and keep the confirmation email handy for the bridge.

Who it suits

Families with young children usually do best on the Canadian side if they fly into Toronto, because the waterparks, Clifton Hill and the illuminated Falls are all walkable; our families page adds tips for car seats and naps. Couples who want a falls-view room for a special night choose Fallsview almost without exception. Individuals flying into Buffalo on a short trip often prefer a US-side hotel and a single evening crossing. Groups split across both banks, for example a wedding party, are easiest to move with one Sprinter that crosses as a unit.

Frequently asked questions

Which side of Niagara Falls has better hotels?

The Canadian side has more and taller hotels, many with rooms facing both the Horseshoe and American Falls. The US side has fewer, lower hotels close to Niagara Falls State Park. "Better" depends on whether you want a falls-view room or a short trip from Buffalo airport.

Can you see the Falls from US-side hotel rooms?

A few rooms have partial views, but the panoramic falls-view rooms are on the Canadian side, along Fallsview Boulevard and Falls Avenue. On the US side the strength is being a short walk from Prospect Point, Goat Island and the Maid of the Mist.

How far apart are the Canadian and US hotel districts?

Fallsview Boulevard to Niagara Falls State Park is about 3 km (2 mi) by road over the Rainbow Bridge, around 6 minutes of driving before inspection. Clifton Hill to Old Falls Street is about 2 km. The border inspection is the unknown, and nobody can promise its length.

Do I need a passport to stay on one side and visit the other?

Every passenger needs valid documents for each crossing. US and Canadian citizens can use a passport, passport card, enhanced driver's licence or NEXUS card for land entry to the US; children under 16 can use a birth certificate. Other travellers usually need a passport and an ESTA or visa.

Is there a toll to cross the Rainbow Bridge?

Only into Canada. As of 2026 the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission lists US$6.00 or CA$8.50 for a passenger car entering Canada at the Rainbow Bridge. There is no bridge toll for driving into the United States.

Is it cheaper to stay on the American side?

Sometimes, sometimes not; it depends on the date, the view category and the exchange rate. Compare the final total in one currency, including taxes and parking. NiagaraFallsLimo.net does not sell hotel rooms, so we have no stake in the answer.

Which side is easier from Buffalo airport?

The US side, by about 3 km and one border inspection. Buffalo Niagara International to Old Falls Street is about 39 km (24 mi), roughly 40 minutes; to Fallsview it is about 42 km (26 mi), usually around 45 minutes plus the Canadian inspection.
