The vineyards get the headlines, but most of the good Niagara on the Lake things to do are inside the town itself, in the grid of tree-lined streets where the Niagara River meets Lake Ontario. There is a major repertory theatre festival, a rebuilt War of 1812 fort, a main street of heritage storefronts, riverside inns, an arts centre in an old pumphouse, and, just up the Parkway, the village of Queenston and the heights above it. You could spend a weekend here without opening a wine list.

This guide from NiagaraFallsLimo.net walks through the town and its edges, with the distances between them, so couples staying at the Falls or coming from Toronto can plan a day that is about more than tastings.

What are the best things to do in Niagara-on-the-Lake besides wineries?

Beyond wineries, Niagara-on-the-Lake's highlights are the Shaw Festival's theatres, Fort George National Historic Site, the shops and cafés of Queen Street, the Niagara Pumphouse Arts Centre, and nearby Queenston Heights and Brock's Monument. Old Town is about 23 km (15 mi) from Niagara Falls, usually 25–30 minutes. NiagaraFallsLimo.net drives there with a fixed fare shown in its online booker.

Getting there and getting around

Old Town Niagara-on-the-Lake (the town calls it the Heritage District) is compact enough to walk once you arrive. The question is how to arrive, and how to leave late in the evening.

  • From Niagara Falls: about 23 km (15 mi), usually 25–30 minutes, either up the Niagara Parkway along the river or via the QEW and Highway 55.
  • From downtown Toronto: about 127 km (79 mi), usually 1 h 40 – 1 h 50 off-peak.
  • From Buffalo Niagara International Airport: about 57 km (35 mi), around an hour, plus the border queue.

By transit: GO Transit describes a route from Niagara Falls GO station on the WEGO Green Line to the Floral Clock, then the seasonal WEGO Orange Line shuttle to Fort George, a seven-minute walk from Queen Street. In 2026 that shuttle ran hourly from April 6 through October, with the last return from Fort George at 7 pm, which rules out an evening at the theatre.

By car: the Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake enforces metered parking in the Heritage District daily from 10 am to 8 pm, at $5.25 to $5.75 an hour, as of 2026. Summer weekends are busy. Our Niagara Falls to Niagara-on-the-Lake route page covers the drive.

The Shaw Festival: three theatres in a small town

The Shaw Festival is the town's cultural anchor, a repertory company that has staged plays here since 1962. Its 2026 season, the 64th, runs from April 2 to December 23. The summer plays had closed by October 11, and the holiday season takes over from November: A Year with Frog and Toad at the Court House Theatre (previews from November 5) and Rodgers + Hammerstein's Cinderella at the Festival Theatre (previews from November 8), both through December 23.

Two changes to know about. The Royal George Theatre on Queen Street played its final season "for now" in 2025, and in 2026 the festival moved into the newly rebuilt Court House Theatre, where it began.

For couples, an evening performance is the single best reason to stay overnight in town; a matinee works as a day trip. Our Shaw Festival page explains drop-off and pickup timing around curtain calls.

Book a car to the Shaw Festival

Fort George National Historic Site

A short walk or a three-minute drive (about 1.7 km) from Queen Street, along Queens Parade.

Fort George was a British army post during the War of 1812 and, Parks Canada says, headquarters of the British Army's Centre Division. Today the palisaded fort is a Parks Canada national historic site at 51 Queens Parade, open year-round, with costumed musket and music demonstrations that peak in the summer months. There is pay parking on site. Allow an hour and a half if you want to see the barracks, the officers' quarters and a demonstration. Our Fort George page has more on visiting.

Next to the fort, the open parkland along the river is one of the quietest places in town to walk at sunset, with the American shore and Old Fort Niagara visible across the water.

Queen Street and the Heritage District

Queen Street is the main street of Old Town: a few blocks of heritage storefronts, cafés, galleries and shops. It is busy on summer weekend afternoons and pleasantly calm on weekday mornings and in the off-season.

A few things worth knowing:

  • Dining. Treadwell, at 114 Queen Street, serves farm-to-table food; Two Sisters Vineyards also runs 11th Post on Queen at 135 Queen Street. Our Niagara-on-the-Lake restaurants guide has more.
  • Hotels on and off the main street. The Prince of Wales at 6 Picton Street, the Pillar and Post on John Street and Queen's Landing near the Shaw Festival are within walking distance. See Niagara-on-the-Lake inns.
  • Winter events. The Niagara Icewine Festival's Icewine Village usually takes over Queen Street over two January weekends, with fire pits and ice carving; dates for 2027 had not been published by October 2026.

The Niagara Pumphouse Arts Centre

The Niagara Pumphouse Arts Centre describes itself as the town's art hub, with exhibitions, classes, workshops and seasonal events. It is a short walk from Queen Street and a good change of pace between a theatre matinee and dinner. Check its website for current exhibitions and hours before you go.

Niagara-on-the-Lake things to do along the Parkway: Queenston and the Floral Clock

South of town, the Niagara Parkway follows the river through orchards and vineyards towards Niagara Falls. Two stops are worth a detour:

Queenston Heights and Brock's Monument. About 13 km (8 mi) from Old Town, around 15–20 minutes. The Friends of Fort George describe Brock's Monument as 56 m (185 ft) tall with 235 steps to the top; its hours were shifting through the rest of the 2026 season while Parks Canada worked on the site. The park around it marks the southern end of the Bruce Trail, Canada's oldest and longest marked footpath, and holds the Landscape of Nations Memorial.

Queenston village. Below the Heights, the Laura Secord Homestead and the Mackenzie Printery are seasonal Niagara Parks sites, open from May to October. The Whirlpool Jet Boat's Canadian dock is also here, at 55 River Frontage Road; there is no longer a departure from Old Town.

The Floral Clock. About 4 km further towards the Falls, a 40-ft clock face planted with up to 16,000 plants. Free parking, ten minutes.

Shopping and a craft stop

  • Outlet Collection at Niagara, at 300 Taylor Road, about 8.5 km (5 mi) from Old Town, with more than 100 outlet brands; open until 9 pm Tuesday to Saturday and 6 pm Sunday and Monday. See our Outlet Collection page.
  • Silversmith Brewing, in a church building dating to the 1890s on Niagara Stone Road in Virgil, is a popular stop for those who want something other than wine. As with every stop on a day out with us, drinking stays at the venue; there is no drinking in our vehicles.

Verdict. For a sunny daytime visit in season, the GO and WEGO combination is genuinely good value and we would recommend it to a budget traveller. Rideshare is fine for the trip in. The difficulty is the trip out: the shuttle's last return leaves at 7 pm, and rides can be hard to find in a small town after a theatre performance finishes. That is when a car waiting outside the Festival Theatre is worth having, especially if you are heading back to the Falls or to Toronto.

Booking it with NiagaraFallsLimo.net in 3 steps

  1. Set the route. In the online booker, enter your Falls hotel or Toronto address as pickup and Niagara-on-the-Lake (the theatre, an inn or a restaurant) as drop-off, or choose "By the hour" for a day with several stops.
  2. Choose the car. A Mercedes-Benz E or S-Class, Maybach or Rolls-Royce for two (availability of the last two confirmed at booking), an SUV for up to six, a Sprinter for up to twelve. Each shows its fixed fare.
  3. Add the timing and pay. Note the curtain time and the expected finish, add any requests, pay securely and keep the email confirmation.

Who it suits

Couples are Niagara-on-the-Lake's natural visitors: a matinee or an evening show, dinner on Queen Street and a walk by the river. Individuals with an interest in history can fill a day between Fort George and Queenston Heights. Families with school-age children enjoy the fort's demonstrations and the open lawns along the river. Groups attending the Shaw Festival together find a Sprinter simpler than coordinating several cars after the show.

For a heritage-focused day, read the Fort George and Old Town heritage tour by private car. For transport details, see the Niagara-on-the-Lake visitor guide, and if you are heading back to the city, car service to Toronto after a Shaw matinee.

Frequently asked questions

What is Niagara-on-the-Lake known for besides wine?

The Shaw Festival, one of Canada's best-known theatre festivals; its well-preserved Heritage District around Queen Street; Fort George National Historic Site from the War of 1812; and its position where the Niagara River meets Lake Ontario. Queenston Heights and Brock's Monument are a short drive away.

How far is Niagara-on-the-Lake from Niagara Falls?

About 23 km (15 mi) from the Fallsview hotels, usually 25–30 minutes by car, either along the scenic Niagara Parkway or via the QEW and Highway 55. In season, the WEGO bus and a shuttle connect the two, with a transfer at the Floral Clock.

Is Niagara-on-the-Lake walkable?

Old Town is very walkable: Queen Street, the hotels, the Shaw Festival theatres, Fort George and the riverside park are all within a short walk of each other. Wineries, the outlet mall and Queenston are spread out along country roads and need a car, a bike or a tour.

When is the Shaw Festival season?

The 2026 season runs from April 2 to December 23. The summer plays closed by October 11, and the holiday productions, A Year with Frog and Toad and Rodgers + Hammerstein's Cinderella, begin previews on November 5 and November 8 and run through December 23.

Can you get to Niagara-on-the-Lake without a car?

Yes, in season. GO Transit's suggested route uses the WEGO Green Line from Niagara Falls GO station to the Floral Clock, then the WEGO Orange Line shuttle to Fort George. In 2026 the shuttle ran from April to October, hourly, with the last return at 7 pm. Out of season, or for evenings, a car is the practical choice.

Is there parking in Old Town Niagara-on-the-Lake?

Yes, metered. The town enforces metered parking in the Heritage District daily from 10 am to 8 pm, at $5.25 to $5.75 an hour as of 2026, payable at machines or through the Honk and Parkedin apps. Summer weekend afternoons are the busiest.

Does the Whirlpool Jet Boat leave from Niagara-on-the-Lake?

Not from Old Town any more. The Canadian departure is in Queenston, at 55 River Frontage Road, which is within the Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake but about 13 km from Queen Street. Plan the drive, or a pickup, accordingly.
