There are two cities called Niagara Falls, one in New York and one in Ontario, facing each other across the gorge. Buffalo is about half an hour from either by road, but only one of those trips crosses an international border. That single fact explains why the question of how far Buffalo is from Niagara Falls gets answers ranging from "twenty minutes" to "an hour and a half".
NiagaraFallsLimo.net drives this corridor in both directions, from Buffalo hotels, Buffalo Niagara International Airport (BUF) and the Amtrak stations to hotels on both sides of the river. Here are the distances first, then what changes the time.
How far is Buffalo from Niagara Falls in kilometres, miles and minutes?
Downtown Buffalo is about 33 km (21 mi) from Niagara Falls, New York, usually 30–35 minutes on I-190. To the Canadian side it is about 32 km (20 mi) via the Peace Bridge, roughly 35 minutes of driving plus the border inspection. NiagaraFallsLimo.net drives both routes; the online booker shows a fixed fare before you pay.
Driving time and crossing time are separate numbers, and only the first can be estimated with any honesty. Here is the driving part, from road routing without traffic:
| From | To | Distance | Driving time (no border wait) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Downtown Buffalo (Niagara Square) | Niagara Falls State Park, NY | about 33 km (21 mi) | about 30–35 min |
| Downtown Buffalo | Table Rock, Niagara Falls ON, via Peace Bridge | about 32 km (20 mi) | about 35 min |
| Downtown Buffalo | Table Rock, via I-190 and Rainbow Bridge | about 44 km (27 mi) | about 45 min |
| Buffalo Niagara airport (BUF) | Niagara Falls State Park, NY | about 40 km (25 mi) | about 40 min |
| BUF | Table Rock, Niagara Falls ON | about 44–50 km (27–31 mi) | about 45–55 min |
| Niagara Falls, NY | Niagara Falls, ON, over the Rainbow Bridge | about 5 km (3 mi) | about 10 min |
Our Buffalo to Niagara Falls, Canada route page and the Buffalo airport transfer page cover pickup points and timing in more depth.
Two routes to the Canadian side
Through the Peace Bridge. From downtown Buffalo, the Peace Bridge is only a few minutes away. You cross into Fort Erie, Ontario, then follow the QEW north to Niagara Falls. On paper this is the shortest drive to the Canadian falls. The Peace Bridge is cashless: as of 2026 the car toll into Canada is US$8.00 or CA$11.00 by card, or US$4.00 with E-ZPass, according to the Peace Bridge Authority. Our Peace Bridge guide explains the lanes.
Through Niagara Falls, NY. The alternative is I-190 north across Grand Island to Niagara Falls, NY, then the Rainbow Bridge straight into the Clifton Hill and Falls Avenue area. It is longer, but it lands you at the falls rather than on the QEW. The Grand Island bridges on I-190 have used cashless tolling since 2018, so a rental car will see the toll billed by E-ZPass or by mail. The Niagara Falls Bridge Commission charges US$6.00 or CA$8.50 for a car entering Canada on the Rainbow Bridge (as of 2026), per its toll page. See our Rainbow Bridge guide.
All of these tolls apply only when entering Canada. Neither bridge authority charges a toll to enter the United States.
Which is faster on a given day depends almost entirely on the inspection queues, not the kilometres. A ten-minute saving on the road disappears behind a long line of cars.
What "crossing time" really means
Nobody can promise how long a border crossing will take, and we do not. What can be said:
- Two agencies, two queues. Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) inspects traffic entering Canada; US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) inspects traffic entering the US. The bridge operators only collect tolls.
- Live estimates exist for both directions. The CBSA border wait times page covers traffic into Canada at the Peace, Rainbow and Lewiston-Queenston bridges. CBP's Border Wait Times site covers traffic into the US. CBP notes its figures may be up to an hour old.
- Hours differ. CBP lists the Rainbow, Peace and Lewiston-Queenston bridges as open around the clock. The Whirlpool Rapids Bridge is NEXUS-only, 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., and every person in the car must hold NEXUS.
- Busy times are predictable. CBSA's own advice is that early mornings are the best time to avoid waits and that holiday long weekends are the busiest.
Our border wait times page explains how we watch these feeds and when a chauffeur may switch bridges before reaching the queue.

Documents for the Buffalo to Niagara Falls crossing
Crossing from Buffalo into Ontario, every passenger needs their own accepted document. CBSA recommends a valid passport for US citizens; US permanent residents arriving by land should show their permanent resident card. Visitors from countries that need a Canadian visa still need it by land, although the eTA applies only to air travel. Children travelling without both parents should carry a consent letter. Read documents for entering Canada before you leave.
Going the other way, into the US, international visitors on the Visa Waiver Program need an approved ESTA before reaching a land border, and the I-94 land fee is US$30 (as of 2026). Our chauffeur crosses with you, but each passenger answers for their own papers.
Without a car: bus, train and rideshare
NFTA Metro bus. Route 40 runs between downtown Buffalo and Niagara Falls, NY via Grand Island, according to NFTA Metro. It stays in the United States.
Amtrak. The Maple Leaf calls at Buffalo-Exchange Street and Buffalo-Depew, then Niagara Falls, NY and Niagara Falls, ON, once a day in each direction. At the border, passengers leave the train with all their bags for inspection, then reboard. It is a good option if your schedule matches the single daily train.
Rideshare. Apps work well between Buffalo and Niagara Falls, NY. Crossing to Canada is the catch: Niagara Falls International Airport warns that rideshare services may not cross the border, so plan on a different arrangement for the Canadian side. Our sibling post on Uber from Buffalo to Niagara Falls and the border catch goes into detail.
Chauffeur vs rideshare vs taxi for this trip
| Mode | Door-to-door time | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rideshare app | 30–40 min to Niagara Falls, NY | Surge pricing at busy times | Standard trunk | US-side trips only |
| Taxi | Similar on the US side | Metered | Standard trunk | US-side hops; confirm before booking a crossing |
| NFTA Metro route 40 | Well over an hour with stops | Public fare | What you carry | Budget US-side trips |
| Amtrak Maple Leaf | Fixed schedule, one train a day | Ticketed | Generous | Travellers whose timing fits the train |
| Driving yourself | 35–45 min plus the border | Fuel plus bridge toll | Your trunk | Confident drivers with all documents |
| Private chauffeur | Direct, crossing included | Fixed fare via booker | Matched to the vehicle | Canada-side hotels, BUF arrivals, families, late flights |
Verdict: if you are staying in Niagara Falls, New York, a rideshare from Buffalo or the airport is perfectly sensible. If your hotel is in Ontario, the crossing changes the calculation. A pre-booked car with a chauffeur who drives the bridges daily removes the guesswork about which crossing to use, carries your bags through, and is waiting at BUF even when your flight is late. The cross-border car service page explains how that works.
A worked example: BUF to a Fallsview hotel
A family of four lands at Buffalo Niagara International at 6:40 p.m. on a Friday in July. They have two large bags, two carry-ons and a five-year-old who needs a booster seat.
- The chauffeur tracks the flight and meets them in arrivals, if meet and greet was booked.
- Car seat fitted, bags in a Standard SUV, the car leaves the airport around 7:20 p.m.
- Driving time to the Canadian side is about 45–55 minutes. Before choosing the Peace or Rainbow Bridge, the chauffeur checks live wait times.
- At the booth, each passenger shows their passport (or, for the child, the accepted document). The officer may ask about purchases, the length of stay and the purpose of the visit.
- Drop-off at the hotel's main entrance on Fallsview Boulevard.
On a quiet Tuesday the same trip is often under an hour from curb to curb. On a holiday weekend it can be much longer. That uncertainty is the reason we never quote a crossing time, only a driving time.
Booking it with NiagaraFallsLimo.net in 3 steps
- Where and when. In the online booker, enter BUF, a Buffalo hotel or an Amtrak station as the pickup and your hotel on either side of the river as the drop-off, with your flight or train number.
- Which car. Compare vehicle classes, each with its fixed all-in fare: a Standard Sedan for up to three with two large bags, an SUV for up to six with six bags.
- Who and what. Add passengers, bags, child seats and meet and greet, pay securely and keep the email confirmation handy for the trip.
Who this suits
Individual travellers flying into BUF for a meeting in Ontario avoid working out the bridges alone. Couples get a calm start to a weekend instead of a rental-car counter and a toll question. Families with car seats and bags benefit most, since one vehicle handles the airport, the crossing and the hotel door. Groups can travel in an SUV or Sprinter so nobody is split across two cars at the border.
