Couples who come for the falls often leave having seen only the falls, and never look at the things to do near Niagara Falls in Canada. That is a shame, because the land within half an hour of the Horseshoe is unusually varied: the Niagara River gorge, the edge of the Niagara Escarpment, Lake Ontario's shoreline, a working ship canal, and the vineyards in between.
NiagaraFallsLimo.net drives these short trips every day, usually as a half-day or full-day booking from a Fallsview or Clifton Hill hotel. Every drive time below is measured from the Fallsview hotel strip, without traffic.
What is there to do near Niagara Falls in Canada within 30 minutes?

North along the Niagara Parkway
The Niagara Parkway runs north from the falls beside the river, and most of the closest outings are strung along it. Niagara Parks describes 56 km of parkland along the river, much of it on this road.
Whirlpool Aero Car. An antique cable car that has crossed the Niagara Whirlpool since 1916, 3,500 ft each way, designed by Leonardo Torres Quevedo. It crosses the international line four times without leaving Canada. The Niagara Parks Aero Car page gives the April-to-November season.
Niagara Glen. Stairs lead down into the gorge to about 4 km of rugged trails through old-growth Carolinian forest, with hiking from sunrise to sunset only. In fall 2026, part of the Terrace Trail and all of the Whirlpool Trail were closed for maintenance, so check before you go. Wear real shoes; the stairs back up are the workout. Our Niagara Glen and Botanical Gardens page covers access.
Floral Clock. A 40-ft clock face planted with up to 16,000 plants and replanted twice a year, with Westminster chimes each quarter hour, according to Niagara Parks. Ten minutes is enough unless you are a gardener.
Queenston Heights. The park at the top of the escarpment holds Brock's Monument, 56 m (185 ft) high with 235 steps to the top, and the southern end of the Bruce Trail. Parks Canada work is shifting the monument's hours for the rest of the 2026 season. On a clear day the view north to Lake Ontario explains why the 1812 battle was fought here.
Into the vineyards
Between the Parkway and Niagara-on-the-Lake lie the St. Davids Bench and Niagara River sub-appellations, which put many tasting rooms within twenty minutes of the falls. Château des Charmes on York Road, for example, is about 12 km from Fallsview. Inniskillin, Reif and others sit along the Parkway itself. Our Niagara-on-the-Lake wineries page lists estates by area.
This is the obvious place for a driver. Two or three tastings in an afternoon are not compatible with driving yourself back to the hotel.

Niagara-on-the-Lake's Old Town
At about 24 km and half an hour, Old Town sits right at the edge of this list. Queen Street, the Shaw Festival theatres, the lakeshore and Fort George are all walkable once you arrive. The Falls to Niagara-on-the-Lake route page compares the Parkway with the faster inland road. If you want to go beyond tasting rooms, our sibling post on things to do in Niagara-on-the-Lake beyond the wineries fills an afternoon.
West to St. Catharines and the Welland Canal
The Welland Canal carries lake freighters between Lake Ontario and Lake Erie, 23.5 nautical miles with eight locks, raising and lowering ships between the two lakes. The best place to watch is Lock 3 in St. Catharines, about 17 km from Fallsview.
The St. Catharines Museum and Welland Canals Centre has a raised viewing platform, and admission is by donation. Ships are scheduled by the Seaway, usually no more than 24 hours ahead, and a lockage takes about 20 minutes. The canal closes to shipping from early January to mid-March, so plan this one between spring and the end of the year. Our Welland Canals Centre page has the drop-off details.
Port Dalhousie. On the lakeshore north of downtown St. Catharines, about 22 minutes from the falls, Lakeside Park holds a carousel hand-carved by Charles I.D. Looff between 1898 and 1905, with 68 animals and four chariots. The City of St. Catharines still charges five cents a ride. It runs on weekends from mid-May, daily through summer and on weekends again until mid-October.
South-west to Short Hills Provincial Park
Short Hills is the least known place on this list and the most peaceful. The Ontario Parks page classes it as a natural environment park with trails, some for hiking only, and three parking lots reached from Cataract, Roland or Pelham roads, about 4 km south-west of St. Catharines. There are no other visitor facilities, so bring water.
Hiking, horseback riding, fishing and mountain biking are the activities listed. A chauffeur drops you at the lot you choose and returns at a set time, which avoids the question of whether you parked in the right lot for the trail you walked.
A sample afternoon for two
- 1:00 p.m. Pickup at your Fallsview hotel.
- 1:15 p.m. Niagara Glen, a 90-minute walk down to the river and back.
- 3:00 p.m. Queenston Heights for the view, then a tasting at a St. Davids winery.
- 5:00 p.m. Old Town Niagara-on-the-Lake for a walk and an early dinner.
- 8:00 p.m. Back to the falls in time to see them lit.
That is roughly 50 km of driving across seven hours, which is exactly what our private Niagara Falls tour is built for.

Things to do near Niagara Falls in Canada, season by season
Not every stop works every month, so pick by season:
- April to November: the Aero Car is running, the Glen's trails are at their best in late spring and early fall, and the Welland Canal is busy with shipping.
- Summer weekends: Port Dalhousie's carousel runs daily through the summer holidays, and Old Town is at its liveliest, with the Shaw Festival in full season. Book dinner ahead.
- Late fall: the Aero Car and the carousel close for the year, but the wineries are open, the leaves on the escarpment turn, and the Winter Festival of Lights begins in mid-November back at the falls.
- January to mid-March: the canal is closed to ships and some trails are icy. A winter day leans towards tasting rooms, Old Town's shops and an early evening by the illuminated falls.
The drive times in the table above hold year-round outside rush hour. Snow on the escarpment roads can add a little to the Queenston and Short Hills legs.
Chauffeur vs rideshare vs taxi for this trip
| Mode | Door-to-door time | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| WEGO + walking | Works for Niagara Parks sites along the river; not built for St. Catharines or Short Hills | $16 adult 24-hour pass (as of 2026) | Day bag | Budget days along the river |
| Rideshare | Easy outbound; harder to find a car at Short Hills or a winery | Surge pricing at busy times | Day bag | One destination, one way |
| Taxi | Similar to rideshare | Metered | Day bag | A single hop to St. Catharines |
| Driving yourself | Shortest, until the tasting | Fuel plus parking | Your trunk | Trips with no wine involved |
| Private chauffeur by the hour | Direct, with the car waiting | Fixed fare via booker | Purchases ride in the trunk | Multi-stop afternoons, winery visits, couples |
Verdict: for a single trip up the Parkway to the Aero Car or the Glen, WEGO and your feet are enough. For one destination in St. Catharines, a taxi or rideshare is reasonable. Where a booked car is the better tool is a multi-stop afternoon, anything with a tasting in it, and the return from places with no taxi rank, such as a trailhead lot at Short Hills. Our guide comparing chauffeurs, taxis and rideshare explains the trade-offs.

Who this suits
This list is written for couples, who tend to have a free afternoon and no wish to spend it in traffic or parking lots. Families can use the same map, swapping the winery for the Aero Car and the Port Dalhousie carousel. Groups of friends fit well in an SUV for a wine-and-canal day. Individual travellers with a few hours between meetings can do the Glen and Queenston Heights in under three. For a couples' plan over two days, read the sibling post on Niagara Falls for couples without driving, and for more out-of-the-way stops, see places around Niagara most tourists miss.

Is Niagara-on-the-Lake within 30 minutes of Niagara Falls?

Is Short Hills Provincial Park worth visiting from Niagara Falls?
For walkers, yes. It is about 30 minutes from Fallsview, with trails and three parking lots but no other facilities. Hiking, horseback riding, fishing and mountain biking are listed by Ontario Parks. Bring water and plan your pickup time in advance.
Do I need a passport for the Whirlpool Aero Car?
No. The cable car crosses the border line four times over the Whirlpool, but it never leaves Canada, so no passport is needed for the ride itself.
Can a chauffeur take us to several of these places in one afternoon?
Yes. Book the "By the hour" mode and the vehicle waits at each stop. A typical afternoon covers the Glen, Queenston Heights, one winery and Old Town in about seven hours.
Which of these is best on a rainy day?
The Welland Canals Centre has an indoor museum alongside the viewing platform, and the wineries all have indoor tasting rooms. Old Town Niagara-on-the-Lake's shops and restaurants work in any weather. Niagara Glen and Short Hills are best saved for a dry day.
