It usually starts in a group chat in the second week of term. Somebody posts a photo of the Horseshoe Falls, somebody else asks how far it is, and within an hour there are six names on a list. For international students in Toronto, a Niagara Falls weekend is close to a rite of passage, and it is easy to do well on a student budget.

This guide covers the three realistic ways down, the documents that catch exchange students out at the border, and the point at which splitting one booked car with NiagaraFallsLimo.net costs about the same as a stack of tickets.

How do international students get to Niagara Falls from Toronto?

Most international students take the GO train or FlixBus from Union Station, about 130 km (81 mi) and around 2 h with the last local leg. Groups of five or six often split one NiagaraFallsLimo.net SUV, about 1 h 35 – 1 h 50 door to door off-peak, at a fixed fare per vehicle shown in the online booker.

Before you go: the documents that matter

Staying on the Canadian side needs nothing special. Carry your passport anyway, because hotels, casinos and anywhere serving alcohol will ask for photo ID, and a passport is the one every international student has.

Crossing to the American side is a different matter:

  1. Your study permit is not a travel document. It lets you study in Canada; it does not let you into the United States.
  2. You need US entry permission of your own. Depending on your nationality, that may be a US visa or an approved ESTA, plus your passport. The Rainbow Bridge is a full international border.
  3. Check that you can come back. Canada's immigration department explains when students can re-enter after travelling, including a narrow case where an expired visitor visa may still be accepted after a trip only to the United States, if you return before your study permit expires (IRCC: students travelling outside Canada). Read it before you cross, not at the booth.
  4. Leave cannabis behind. Taking cannabis across the border in any form without authorization is a serious criminal offence in Canada, and it remains illegal under US federal law (CBSA cannabis rules).

Our guide for international visitors and the sibling post on visa requirements for seeing both sides of the Falls go into more detail. If anyone in your group is unsure, the simplest answer is to keep the weekend on the Canadian side, which has the better view of the Horseshoe Falls anyway.

Three ways down from Toronto

GO Transit, with the student discount. GO runs to Niagara Falls GO year-round. Full-time post-secondary students of any age can save 40% on GO Transit and UP Express with PRESTO, after applying for a GO Transit Student ID (GO post-secondary discount). Apply well before the weekend, since the discount is loaded to your card after approval. Niagara Falls GO shares 4267 Bridge Street with the VIA station, about 4 km from the Falls, and is not staffed, so plan the last leg.

FlixBus. FlixBus lists at least 13 Toronto to Niagara Falls trips a day, a minimum trip time of about 1 h 30 min and fares from $20.98 (as of 2026), with stops including Union Station Bus Terminal at 81 Bay Street. A FlixBus ticket to the Rapidsview stop includes a free WEGO shuttle to Table Rock and back (FlixBus route).

Splitting one car. If there are five or six of you, a Standard SUV (Suburban or Yukon XL) carries up to six passengers and six bags. If there are a dozen, an Executive Sprinter seats up to twelve with carry-on bags only. Either goes door to door from residence or a downtown address to your hotel, about 130 km and 1 h 35 – 1 h 50 off-peak, allowing two hours or more on a Friday afternoon. Our page on stretch limos and Sprinters compares the larger vehicles.

Price a shared SUV

The group maths, done honestly

Our fares are per vehicle, not per person. That changes the comparison completely for a group:

  • Two or three students: take the GO train with the student discount, or FlixBus. A car will not compete on cost.
  • Five or six students: add up the train or bus fares both ways, plus a local ride from the station or terminal to the hotel. Then open the booker and look at the fixed fare for a Standard SUV, divided by six. Compare the two totals; whichever way it falls, the car saves the transfers.
  • Ten to twelve students: an Executive Sprinter's fixed fare split twelve ways is often the most practical way to keep a big group together, especially for a Friday-evening departure or a Sunday-night return.

We cannot print fares on this page, but the booker shows the exact all-in figure for your pickup, drop-off and vehicle before anyone pays. One person books and pays; how the group settles up is up to you. Our sibling post on Megabus versus a chauffeur from Toronto runs the same comparison for smaller groups.

A student-budget weekend plan

Friday evening: arrive, check in, walk down to the railings for the illumination. The Falls are lit every night of the year, and in the winter months the lights start around 4:30 pm.

Saturday: buy a WEGO 48-hour pass ($20.00 adult, tax included, as of 2026), which covers Niagara Parks sites and the Niagara-on-the-Lake shuttle with transfers at the Floral Clock (WEGO). Pick one paid attraction, such as Journey Behind the Falls, which is open year-round, or a boat tour from April to November. In the evening, Clifton Hill's arcades, the Niagara SkyWheel and the bright strip of attractions are where most groups end up; our Clifton Hill page covers the area.

Sunday: the free options. Walk Queen Victoria Park, take WEGO north to the Floral Clock and Queenston Heights, or visit the ships at Lock 3 in St. Catharines, where the Welland Canals Centre is admission by donation. Our things to do in Niagara Falls guide and the sibling post on free things to do in Niagara Falls have more.

From November 14, 2026 to January 10, 2027, the free Winter Festival of Lights adds displays along the Parkway, Fallsview and Lundy's Lane every night from 5 pm to midnight.

Staying safe as a group

Niagara Falls is busy and well lit in its tourist core, but a few habits help:

  • Know Ontario's ages. The legal drinking age in Ontario is 19, and the casinos, Fallsview Casino Resort and Casino Niagara, are 19+. Expect to show ID.
  • Use a buddy system at night. Agree a meeting point and a time to head back to the hotel, and share live locations in the group chat.
  • Keep valuables in the hotel. Carry one card, some cash and your phone; leave the passport locked away unless you are crossing the border.
  • Watch the edges. Railings and paths near the brink are slick with spray in summer and ice in winter. Stay behind the barriers.
  • Book the late ride in advance. If you are coming back from Niagara-on-the-Lake or a show after midnight, a ride arranged for a time and a door is safer than looking for one on the street.

Getting back on Sunday night

Sunday evening is when weekend plans unravel. Check the GO schedule and the last FlixBus departure before Saturday night, not on Sunday afternoon. If the group wants a later return, or several people have heavy bags or early Monday classes, a booked car back to residence takes the stress out of the last leg. For groups larger than our Sprinter, coaches are available on request through our group transportation service.

What we would tell a friend: for one to three students, the GO train with the student discount or FlixBus is the right answer, and a taxi from the station to the hotel is fine. For groups of five or more, a shared fixed-fare SUV or Sprinter can come close per head once you add transfers, keeps everyone together, and removes the Sunday-night scramble for the last bus.

Booking it with NiagaraFallsLimo.net in 3 steps

  1. One person enters the trip. Residence or downtown pickup, hotel drop-off, date and time, in the online booker.
  2. Choose by headcount. Standard SUV for up to six, Executive Sprinter for up to twelve; each shows its fixed fare.
  3. Add bags and pay. Pay securely, then share the email confirmation in the group chat so everyone has the pickup time.

Who gets the most from this

Individual exchange students travelling alone should usually take the bus or GO train and use WEGO once there. Couples on exchange can do the same, with one booked car if they add Niagara-on-the-Lake. Families visiting a student in Toronto are often the ones who book the SUV for everyone. Groups of five to twelve students get the most value from a shared fixed fare.

Frequently asked questions

Can international students visit the American side of Niagara Falls?

Only with their own US entry permission, such as a US visa or an approved ESTA depending on nationality, plus a passport. A Canadian study permit does not allow entry to the United States. Check IRCC's rules for re-entering Canada as a student before you cross.

Is there a student discount on the GO train to Niagara Falls?

Yes. Full-time post-secondary students of any age can save 40% on GO Transit and UP Express with PRESTO after applying for a GO Transit Student ID. Some schools' own transit passes also work on GO. Apply before your trip, since the discount is added after approval.

What is the cheapest way for students to get to Niagara Falls?

For one or two people, FlixBus fares start from $20.98 (as of 2026), and the GO train with the student discount is also good value. For five or more, compare the total with one shared fixed-fare SUV in the NiagaraFallsLimo.net booker, which goes door to door.

What is the drinking age in Niagara Falls?

The legal drinking age in Ontario is 19, and the Niagara casinos admit guests 19 and over. Expect to show photo ID; a passport is the safest choice for international students. There is no drinking in NiagaraFallsLimo.net vehicles, which Niagara Region's by-law does not permit.

How many students fit in one car?

A Standard SUV or Executive Black SUV carries up to six passengers and six bags. An Executive Sprinter seats up to twelve with carry-on bags only, and a Stretch SUV Limousine up to sixteen with minimal luggage. Coaches are available on request for larger groups.

Is Niagara Falls safe for students at night?

The tourist core is busy and well lit, especially Clifton Hill, Falls Avenue and the Parkway in season. Stay in a group, agree a meeting point and a return time, keep valuables at the hotel and book late rides in advance rather than looking for one on the street.

Do we need a car once we are in Niagara Falls?

Not for the main sights. Fallsview, Clifton Hill and Table Rock are walkable, and a WEGO pass covers Niagara Parks sites and the Niagara-on-the-Lake shuttle. A car helps for late returns to Toronto, wine country and border crossings.
