Ask ten people what a limousine is and you will get ten pictures, from a long white stretch with tinted windows to a plain black sedan waiting at Toronto Pearson with a name board. In everyday speech the words overlap. In the booking, and in the bylaws that license these vehicles, they do not, and choosing the wrong one is the most common reason a client's luggage does not fit.
NiagaraFallsLimo.net operates both kinds of vehicle, so we have no reason to steer you towards one. This is how we explain the difference on the phone.
What is the difference between a black car service and a limo?
A black car service is a chauffeured sedan or SUV, usually for one to six passengers with luggage, used for airport runs and business travel. A limousine is a stretched vehicle for groups of up to eight or sixteen, used for occasions, with little luggage space. NiagaraFallsLimo.net books both, from Niagara Falls, Ontario, through one online booker.
Put another way: a black car moves people from A to B quietly and on time; a limousine is part of the event.
Two terms, one industry
"Black car" is industry shorthand for a pre-booked, non-metered luxury sedan, and today it covers luxury SUVs too. Our journal post on black car service in Niagara Falls looks at the sedans in detail. "Limousine" is older and broader. In many cities it legally includes the sedans as well.
Toronto's vehicle-for-hire bylaw, Municipal Code Chapter 546, shows how blurred the line is. It defines a sedan limousine as a luxury, non-metered vehicle for up to seven passengers, and a stretch limousine as one lengthened by at least 114 cm to carry at least seven passengers. It also requires limousine trips to be pre-arranged through a limousine service company at least 20 minutes before pickup. So, in Toronto's rules, a black car is a kind of limousine.
In Niagara the licensing comes from the Region. Niagara Region By-law 2021-58 licenses "specialty vehicles", a class that includes, but is not limited to, limousines, separately from taxis and rideshare vehicles, which fall under another by-law. Both black cars and stretches are licensed vehicles for hire; the difference for you is in the body, the seating and the purpose.
The vehicles, side by side
These are the classes in our booker, each "or similar", with the model confirmed at booking.
| Vehicle | Passengers | Bags | Usually booked as |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard Sedan (Cadillac XTS or similar) | Up to 3 | 2 large | Black car: airport and city rides |
| Mercedes-Benz E / S-Class | Up to 2 | 2 | Black car: executive travel |
| Standard SUV (Suburban / Yukon XL) | Up to 6 | 6 | Black car: families and luggage |
| Executive Black SUV (Escalade / Navigator) | Up to 6 | 6 | Black car: VIP and corporate |
| Mercedes-Maybach | Up to 2 | 2 | Luxury occasion car |
| Rolls-Royce | Up to 2 | 2 | Wedding and anniversary car |
| Stretch Limousine | Up to 8 | Minimal | Limousine: proms, weddings, nights out |
| Stretch SUV Limousine | Up to 16 | Minimal | Limousine: big celebrations |
| Executive Sprinter (Mercedes-Benz) | Up to 12 | Carry-on only | Group transport, wine days |
| Executive Jet Sprinter | Up to 6 | 2 | Premium small-group travel |
| Party Bus | Up to 12 | 2 | Celebrations with music and lighting |
For the Maybach, the Rolls-Royce, both stretches and the Party Bus, availability is confirmed when you book. Our fleet page shows the interiors.
Look at the "Bags" column: that is where the two worlds split. A stretch limousine gives up its boot to the extra cabin length, so it carries very little luggage. A Standard SUV with six passengers carries six bags. For an airport run, that one column usually decides the booking.

When a black car is the right choice
- Airport transfers. From Toronto Pearson to a Fallsview hotel is about 121 km (75 mi), usually 1 h 30 – 1 h 45 off-peak. That is a long ride to make with bags on your lap. A sedan or SUV with flight tracking and an optional meet and greet inside arrivals is the standard booking; our Toronto Pearson page explains how pickups work at the terminals. Pearson's pre-arranged services page names Terminal 1 Door A and Terminal 3 Door A as the pre-arranged pickup points.
- Business travel. A quiet cabin, a discreet chauffeur, and room to work or take a call. Our private chauffeur service covers meeting days and roadshows, with NDAs on request.
- Cross-border trips. A sedan or SUV crosses the Rainbow, Lewiston-Queenston or Peace Bridge like any car, with every passenger carrying their own documents.
- Low-key arrivals. Some guests simply prefer not to arrive in something that draws a crowd.
When a limousine is the right choice
- Proms and graduations. The stretch is part of the photographs. Our prom limo page covers school rules and timings.
- Weddings. A stretch for the wedding party, a Rolls-Royce for the couple. See the wedding limo service.
- Celebrations of eight to sixteen. Birthdays, stagettes, milestone anniversaries where everyone should arrive together. A Stretch SUV Limousine seats up to sixteen; if music and lighting matter more than the long silhouette, our post on stretch limousine vs party bus compares the two.
- Short, special trips. Hotel to dinner to the illuminated Falls and back. Luggage does not matter; the cabin does.
What a limousine is not, in our vehicles: a bar. We do not allow drinking on board, in line with Niagara Region's by-law, which forbids a licensed driver from permitting alcohol to be consumed in the vehicle. The celebration happens at the venue; the limousine gets everyone there together.
The middle ground: Sprinters and SUVs
Between the sedan and the stretch sits the vehicle many groups actually need. The Executive Sprinter carries up to twelve in comfort, but only carry-on bags; the Executive Jet Sprinter is a more luxurious cabin for up to six with two bags. For a wine day in Niagara-on-the-Lake, a corporate offsite or a family reunion, a Sprinter is usually more practical than a stretch: easier to get in and out of at every winery, better visibility, and less awkward in a tight car park. Our page on stretch limos and Sprinters compares them, as does our journal post on sedan vs SUV vs Sprinter.
How the choice affects your fare
We do not publish prices, because the booker shows the fixed all-in fare for your exact trip and vehicle before you pay. What we can say is what moves the number: the size and class of the vehicle, the distance or the hours, the date and any extras. A larger vehicle carries larger insurance requirements under Niagara's licensing rules, which Niagara Region's business licences page sets out by passenger count. If you are torn between two classes, enter the trip once and look at both fares side by side.
Chauffeur vs rideshare vs taxi for this trip
| Mode | Door-to-door time | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rideshare (standard) | Depends on driver availability | Surge pricing at busy times | Car-sized | A short solo ride with a backpack |
| Rideshare (premium tier) | Depends on availability; vehicle varies | Surge pricing | Car- or SUV-sized | Occasional upgrades in the city |
| Taxi | Rank or dispatch wait | Metered | Car-sized | Short local rides |
| Black car (NiagaraFallsLimo.net sedan or SUV) | Door to door, scheduled | Fixed fare via the booker | 2–6 bags by class | Airports, business, cross-border |
| Limousine (NiagaraFallsLimo.net stretch) | Door to door, scheduled | Fixed fare via the booker | Minimal | Proms, weddings, celebrations of 8–16 |
| Driving yourself | Flexible | Fuel and parking | Your car | Trips with no drinking and no occasion |
The honest verdict: for a two-kilometre hop on Clifton Hill, a taxi or rideshare is fine and we would not pretend otherwise. When the trip has luggage, a flight, a border or a schedule, a black car is the better tool. When the trip is the occasion, book the limousine and accept that the bags go in another car. Our chauffeur vs taxi vs rideshare guide takes the comparison beyond limousines.
Booking it with NiagaraFallsLimo.net in 3 steps
- Describe the trip. Open the booker and enter pickup and drop-off, date and time, and a flight or train number if there is one. Then pick the mode: point to point, return, multi-stop or "By the hour".
- Choose black car or limousine. Each class appears with its passengers, bags and fixed fare. Match the bag count first, then the occasion.
- Finish and pay. Add passengers, child seats, meet and greet or other extras, pay securely and receive your confirmation by email.
Reserve your black car or limo
Who it suits
Individuals and business travellers are the natural black-car clients: one passenger, one or two bags, a schedule to keep; our page for individuals covers solo travel. Couples split down the middle: a sedan for the airport, a Rolls-Royce or Maybach for an anniversary dinner. Families need the SUV, almost always, for bags and car seats. Groups of eight or more choose between a stretch for the occasion and a Sprinter for the logistics. Our guide on how to book a limo walks through the decision.
Frequently asked questions
Is a black car the same as a limo?
In everyday speech they overlap, and some bylaws, such as Toronto's, treat a luxury sedan as a "sedan limousine". In practice a black car is a sedan or SUV for one to six people with luggage, while a limousine is a stretched vehicle for groups and occasions.
Is a black car service cheaper than a limo?
Usually a smaller vehicle costs less than a larger one for the same trip, but it depends on the route, hours and date. NiagaraFallsLimo.net's booker shows the fixed all-in fare for each vehicle class before you pay, so you can compare them directly.
Can a stretch limousine do an airport pickup?
It can, but a stretch has minimal luggage space. For an airport run with suitcases, a Standard SUV or Executive Black SUV is the better choice; if the group wants the stretch, book a second vehicle for the bags.
How many people fit in a limo in Niagara Falls?
Our Stretch Limousine seats up to eight and our Stretch SUV Limousine up to sixteen. The Executive Sprinter and Party Bus each carry up to twelve. Seat belts set the limit, and drivers may not carry more passengers than the vehicle is built for.
What does "black car" mean on a booking?
It means a pre-booked, chauffeured luxury sedan or SUV at a fixed fare, as opposed to a metered taxi or an app-matched rideshare. The driver is assigned to your booking and, for airport pickups, tracks your flight.
Can we drink in a limousine in Niagara?
No. Niagara Region's vehicle-for-hire by-law forbids a licensed driver from permitting alcohol consumption in the vehicle, and NiagaraFallsLimo.net does not allow it in any of its vehicles, black car or limousine.
Which is better for a wedding, a black car or a limousine?
Often both. Many couples book a Rolls-Royce, Maybach or Mercedes S-Class for themselves and a Stretch Limousine or Executive Sprinter for the wedding party, with a separate SUV for parents or grandparents who prefer an easier step in and out. Availability of the Rolls-Royce, Maybach and stretch is confirmed at booking.
Can a black car take us across the border to the US side?
Yes. Sedans and SUVs cross the Rainbow, Lewiston-Queenston and Peace bridges as part of normal service, and the chauffeur crosses with you. Every passenger needs their own valid documents, and nobody can promise how long an inspection will take, so leave a margin before any flight or reservation.
