Every September a new crop of Western University students discovers the same thing. They want to see Niagara Falls, it is "only a couple of hours away", and then they look up the bus. The schedules are there, but the times are long, the departures are fixed, and the trip often runs through somewhere else first. Parents who come to visit hit the same wall in reverse: they flew into Toronto, drove to London, and now want to show the family the falls without spending the whole day in transit.
Is there a fast way to get from London, Ontario to Niagara Falls without driving?
The fastest is a private car. NiagaraFallsLimo.net drives London, Ontario to Niagara Falls in about 2 h 30 – 2 h 45: roughly 205 km (127 mi) via Highway 401, Highway 403 and the QEW. FlixBus lists at least six hours for the same trip. Enter your address in the online booker to see a fixed fare first.
That gap is the whole story of this post. A bus is a perfectly good way to travel. On this particular route it just isn't a quick one.
What "two buses" actually costs you in time
Here is the public-transport picture as it stands in October 2026, from the operators' own pages:
- FlixBus lists London to Niagara Falls with seven direct buses a day, a minimum trip time of six hours and a distance of 317 km. The distance tells you the bus does not take the direct road; it goes the long way round.
- Train plus train. VIA Rail runs from London to Toronto's Union Station. From Union, GO Transit advertises service to Niagara Falls seven days a week. Add the time spent waiting for the connection, and the ride from the Niagara Falls station to the falls themselves, and the day shrinks fast.
- The last mile. The VIA Rail and GO station in Niagara Falls is at 4267 Bridge Street, about 4 km from the falls, according to VIA Rail's station page. That is a local bus, a taxi or a long walk with bags.
For a solo student on a free Saturday with no deadline, any of these can be an adventure. For four or five friends, or for a family visiting a student, the time cost is the problem: a six-hour trip each way leaves almost nothing of the day at the falls.
The car route, and when to drive it
The road trip is far more direct:
- Highway 401 east from London for about 45 km, past the turn for Ingersoll, to Woodstock.
- Highway 403 east from Woodstock, through Brantford and toward Hamilton, about 64 km.
- The Lincoln M. Alexander and Red Hill Valley parkways across Hamilton Mountain and down the escarpment.
- The QEW east along the Lake Ontario shore through Grimsby and St. Catharines to Niagara Falls.
From a Western University pickup on the north side of the city, add a few minutes to reach the 401; the total is about 207 km (129 mi). Timing notes:
- Saturday mornings are the easiest, close to 2 h 30.
- Friday afternoons hit Hamilton and the QEW at their worst. Allow 3 h or more.
- Winter brings snow belts east of London along the 401. The roads are major highways and are cleared, but a squall can slow everything. This is when a professional driver is worth having.

Western weekends: who usually books
We see three kinds of London booking.
Visiting parents. A family flies into Toronto Pearson, visits Western University, and wants one day at the falls. The common plan is a morning pickup from their London hotel, the student collected from residence on the way, four or five hours at the falls, and back for a late dinner.
Student groups. Five or six friends, sometimes a club or residence floor, heading to Niagara for a day or an overnight. The fare in our booker is for the vehicle, so the group divides one fixed number, which the booker shows before anyone pays.
Graduates and new arrivals. International students finishing their degree who want to see the falls before they fly home, often with family who have come for convocation. For them, Niagara is a once-only trip, and they don't want to spend it on buses.
A note on pickups: London is a spread-out city, and a car collecting from three different student houses adds time before the 401 even begins. Where you can, gather the group at one address. If you can't, list every pickup in order as a multi-stop trip so the chauffeur plans the shortest loop, and give each stop a name and a mobile number in the notes. The same applies on the way home; one drop-off is quickest, but the car can drop people at their own doors if you book it that way.
Six friends, one SUV: picking a vehicle
| Group | Vehicle | Bags |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 3 people | Standard Sedan (Cadillac XTS or similar) | 2 large |
| Up to 6 people | Standard SUV (Suburban / Yukon XL) or Executive Black SUV (Escalade / Navigator) | 6 |
| Up to 12 people | Executive Sprinter (Mercedes-Benz) | Carry-on only |
| Up to 16 people | Stretch SUV Limousine, availability confirmed at booking | Minimal |
For a day trip, the Sprinter's carry-on-only rule is rarely a problem: everyone has a backpack and a jacket. For an overnight with suitcases, two SUVs often work better than one Sprinter. Larger groups, such as a full student society, can ask about coaches; our group transportation page explains how bigger moves are organized, and the journal post on university and college group trips to Niagara covers the planning side.
A day at the falls that's worth the drive
With five hours at the falls instead of one, you can actually see it:
- The Horseshoe Falls from Table Rock, where the water goes over right in front of you.
- The boat, from April to November, into the mist below the falls.
- Journey Behind the Falls, open all year, with tunnels and portals at the base of the Horseshoe Falls.
- Clifton Hill for food, the SkyWheel and the arcades.
- The illumination. The falls are lit every night of the year, so an evening departure lets you see them in colour before the ride back.
Two age rules for student trips: Ontario's legal drinking age is 19, and the Niagara Falls casinos are 19-plus. And one rule of ours: there is no drinking in our vehicles, at any age. Niagara Region's vehicle-for-hire by-law forbids drivers from permitting it, and Ontario law only allows liquor in a car if it is sealed or packed away.
Chauffeur vs rideshare vs taxi for this trip
| Mode | Door-to-door time | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private chauffeur | About 2 h 30 – 2 h 45 each way | Fixed fare via booker, split among the group | Up to 6 bags in an SUV | Groups, visiting families, same-day returns |
| FlixBus | Minimum 6 h listed, plus getting to and from the stops | Published fare on the operator's site | Per the operator's baggage rules | Solo travellers with a free day |
| VIA Rail plus GO | Train to Union Station, then GO to Niagara Falls, then a local ride; usually well over 4 h | Published VIA and GO fares | Train allowances | Rail fans, one-way trips |
| Rideshare | Similar driving time, if a driver accepts a 200 km trip | Surge pricing likely at busy times | Depends on the car | Not well suited to this distance |
| Taxi | Similar driving time | Metered long-distance trip; agree terms first | Usually fine | Local London trips |
| Driving yourself | About 2 h 30 each way plus parking | Fuel and parking | Unlimited | Students with a car and an alert driver |
The verdict, said straight: if you are one person with a whole day to spare, the bus is a fair option and we won't tell you otherwise. Our guide to getting to Niagara by train and bus explains it properly, and the journal comparison of FlixBus, Megabus and GO buses from Toronto is useful if you plan to connect there. Once you are a group of four or more, or a family on a one-day visit, a single car that collects you in London and returns you the same evening turns a long expedition into a day out.

Book the London to Niagara ride
Who this trip suits
Groups of students and friends get the most from it. Families visiting Western use it for the one-day falls trip. Couples, including London residents marking an anniversary, book a sedan or Mercedes-Benz for a Fallsview weekend. Individuals with a deadline, such as a flight from Toronto after a falls visit, book one-way legs; see our individuals page for how solo trips work. Students in Guelph face a similar problem from the other side; the Guelph route post covers it.
Frequently asked questions
How far is London, Ontario from Niagara Falls?
About 205 km (127 mi) by road from central London to the Fallsview area, using Highway 401, Highway 403 and the QEW. It usually takes 2 h 30 – 2 h 45 off-peak. From Western University's campus it is about 207 km, a few minutes longer.
Is there a bus from London to Niagara Falls?
Yes. FlixBus lists seven direct buses a day, with a minimum trip time of six hours and a route distance of 317 km. Check the operator's page for current times and stop locations. The car trip is about half the time.
Is there a train from London, Ontario to Niagara Falls?
Not directly. VIA Rail runs from London to Union Station in Toronto, where you change to a GO train or bus to Niagara Falls. The Niagara Falls station is about 4 km from the falls, so you'll need a local ride at the end.
Can a group of students share one car?
Yes. A Standard SUV or Executive Black SUV seats up to six with six bags, and the Executive Sprinter seats up to 12 with carry-on bags only. The fare is fixed for the vehicle and shown in the booker, so the group can split it.
Can we do London to Niagara Falls and back in one day?
Yes. With about 2 h 30 – 2 h 45 each way, a 9 a.m. pickup gets you to the falls before noon, with five or six hours there and a return by evening. The same day by bus would leave very little time at the falls.
Do you pick up at Western University?
Yes. Give a clear address where a car can stop safely, such as a residence entrance on a campus road or a nearby street, and add a note for the chauffeur. Parents staying at a London hotel can be collected there first.
Can we drink on the way back?
No. There is no drinking in our vehicles. Niagara Region's by-law forbids drivers from permitting alcohol in a vehicle for hire, and Ontario law only allows liquor in a car when it is sealed or packed away.
