Chicago sits far enough from Niagara that almost nobody drives it for a short visit, and close enough that the flight is a simple domestic or transborder hop. The real question in Chicago to Niagara Falls planning is which airport to land at. Buffalo Niagara International is closest to the Falls but sits on the American side of the river. Toronto Pearson is farther but already in Canada. NiagaraFallsLimo.net picks up at both every day, so this guide sets out how each plan plays out on the ground, for Chicagoans and for international visitors whose North American trip began by Lake Michigan.

Should you fly from Chicago into Buffalo or Toronto for Niagara Falls?

For a hotel in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Buffalo Niagara International (BUF) is closer: about 43 km (27 mi), roughly 45 minutes plus the bridge. Toronto Pearson (YYZ) is about 120–130 km (75–80 mi), 1 h 30 – 1 h 45 off-peak, with no bridge. NiagaraFallsLimo.net quotes fixed fares from either airport in its booker.

Buffalo's airport lists Chicago nonstops on its commercial carriers page: American and United from O'Hare, and Southwest from Midway. Chicago O'Hare also has nonstop service to Toronto Pearson on more than one airline; check carriers for your dates.

Plan 1: Buffalo, for most Niagara-only trips

Landing at BUF is the short option. Your chauffeur tracks the flight, meets you in arrivals if you add the name-board service, and drives I-290 and I-190 to the Rainbow Bridge, or to the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge for Niagara-on-the-Lake. The flight is domestic, so there is no customs at the airport; the only inspection is the Canadian booth at the bridge, which you clear from your seat. Our Buffalo Niagara airport transfer page covers the pickup.

The trade-off is the bridge. Nobody can promise how long the queue will be, and on a holiday Friday it can be the slowest part of the day. If you are staying on the American side, at a hotel near Niagara Falls State Park, there is no bridge at all, and Buffalo is an easy win. Our guide to the Canadian side vs the American side helps you decide where to sleep.

Plan 2: Toronto Pearson, when Canada is the bigger part of the trip

Fly into Pearson and you clear Canadian customs inside the terminal, then walk out to a pre-arranged pickup point; Pearson designates Terminal 1 Door A and Terminal 3 Door A for pre-arranged cars. From there it is about 120–130 km to the Falls on Highway 403 and the QEW, or the 407 ETR toll highway if traffic is heavy, with no bridge to queue for. Our Toronto Pearson transfer page has the detail.

Pearson is the better choice when you are spending a night or two in Toronto, when you are heading straight to Niagara-on-the-Lake's wineries, or when Buffalo schedules do not suit. It also suits the trip home: US-bound travellers clear US customs and immigration in Toronto before departure, and CBP lists Pearson's Terminals 1 and 3 among its preclearance locations, so you land at O'Hare as a domestic passenger. Our route page for Toronto to Niagara Falls covers the road in both directions.

If you are an international visitor starting in Chicago

Visitors from Europe, Asia or Latin America who flew into O'Hare face one extra consideration: Canada's entry rules depend on how you arrive. Canada's eTA eligibility page says an eTA is needed to board a flight to Canada, but in most cases not for travellers arriving by car, bus, train or boat. Visa-required nationals need a Canadian visitor visa either way.

So a visa-exempt traveller can land at Buffalo and cross by car without an eTA, while the same person flying into Toronto needs one. Coming back into the US, Visa Waiver travellers need their approved ESTA at a land border as well as at an airport. Our international visitors page has the full checklist, and best airport to fly into for Niagara Falls, Canada compares the options for long-haul travellers.

Driving from Chicago, or taking the train

The road is long but straightforward. The fastest route measured is about 837 km (520 mi), running east on I-94 through Michigan, into Ontario at Detroit–Windsor, then Highway 401, Highway 403 and the QEW to the Falls. A northern variant through Port Huron and Sarnia on I-69 and Highway 402 is about 848 km (527 mi). Either is 9 to 10 hours with stops, and you cross the border at the start of Ontario instead of at Niagara. For that route in detail, read Detroit to Niagara Falls through Ontario.

By rail, Amtrak's Lake Shore Limited runs daily between Chicago and New York with a stop at Buffalo-Depew; Amtrak lists the full route at about 19 hours, and sleeping rooms are offered. From Depew you still need a car to the Falls, about 45 minutes before the bridge.

The open-jaw loop: in through one airport, out through the other

Chicago travellers with four or five days often do the smartest thing of all and never retrace their steps. A typical loop looks like this:

  1. Day 1. Fly O'Hare to Toronto Pearson. Ride downtown, or straight to Niagara-on-the-Lake if Toronto is not on the list.
  2. Days 2–3. Toronto sights, then a chauffeured ride of about 130 km down the QEW to Niagara-on-the-Lake for a winery afternoon and the Shaw Festival in season.
  3. Day 4. Along the Niagara Parkway to the Falls, about 20–25 km, with stops at the Floral Clock and Queenston Heights.
  4. Day 5. Cross the Rainbow Bridge with your chauffeur, see the American falls from Niagara Falls State Park, then continue to Buffalo Niagara International for a Midway or O'Hare flight home.

Each leg is a separate booking or one multi-stop booking, and the chauffeur crosses the border with you on the final day. Price the open-jaw airfare for your dates before you commit.

Late arrivals and winter flights

Evening flights from Chicago land late enough that public transport gets thin, especially on the Canadian side. CBP's wait-time data lists the Rainbow, Lewiston-Queenston and Peace bridges as open 24 hours, so a late BUF arrival can still cross; the NEXUS-only Whirlpool Rapids Bridge closes overnight. From December to March, lake-effect snow off Lake Erie can affect Buffalo, and the QEW can slow in a squall. Build slack into connections and evening plans, and let flight tracking move your pickup for you.

Verdict: a solo traveller with a carry-on, staying on the American side, will be perfectly well served by a taxi or rideshare from Buffalo airport. A solo traveller to Toronto with time to spare can ride the bus from Pearson. Once you have a family, more than two bags, a Canadian-side hotel or a late arrival, a pre-booked chauffeur at either airport is the steadier plan, with the fare fixed before you fly. How to book a limo explains what to check before paying any operator.

Who this suits

Individuals on business, such as a Chicago team visiting a supplier in Niagara or Buffalo, usually fly into BUF and take a sedan. Couples often split the difference: fly into Toronto, spend a night downtown, then ride to Niagara-on-the-Lake. Families gain most from BUF and an SUV with child seats fitted ahead of time, because the road time is short. Groups, from conference delegations to a family reunion, can be met by an Executive Sprinter for up to 12 travellers with carry-on bags, or a coach on request; our groups page explains how we split larger parties across vehicles.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Niagara Falls from Chicago?

About 837 km (520 mi) by road from downtown Chicago to Niagara Falls, Ontario, through Michigan and Ontario via Detroit–Windsor, or about 848 km (527 mi) via Port Huron and Sarnia. Plan on 9 to 10 hours with stops. Flying to Buffalo or Toronto is far quicker.

Which Chicago airport flies to Buffalo?

Both. Buffalo Niagara International lists nonstops from O'Hare on American and United, and from Midway on Southwest. Choose the airport closest to where you start in Chicago.

Is it better value to fly into Buffalo or Toronto for Niagara Falls?

Airfares vary by date, so compare both. On the ground, the Buffalo transfer is shorter, about 43 km, while Pearson is about 120–130 km. The NiagaraFallsLimo.net booker shows the fixed fare from each airport before you pay, which makes the comparison simple.

Do I clear customs at the airport or at the border?

It depends where you land. At Toronto Pearson you clear Canadian customs inside the terminal. At Buffalo, the flight from Chicago is domestic, so you clear Canadian customs by car at a Niagara bridge. Flying home from Pearson, you clear US customs in Toronto before boarding.

Do I need a passport to visit Niagara Falls from Chicago?

Only if you cross into Canada. The Canada Border Services Agency recommends a valid passport for US citizens, and if you fly home from Toronto, a passport book is the document to carry. If you stay on the American side and fly into Buffalo, no border crossing is involved.

Can a chauffeur pick us up in Toronto and drop us in Buffalo?

Yes. One-way trips across the border are normal service. Many visitors land at Pearson, spend time in Toronto and Niagara, then fly home from Buffalo, or the other way round. The chauffeur crosses the bridge with you, and each passenger carries their own documents.
