Look at a map of the Great Lakes and the answer is obvious once you see it. Detroit sits at the western tip of a peninsula of Ontario that points straight at Niagara Falls. Going around Lake Erie through Toledo, Cleveland, Erie and Buffalo is the long way. Going through Canada cuts more than 200 km off the trip.

This guide is for Detroit-area groups planning a Niagara weekend. NiagaraFallsLimo.net drives Detroit to Niagara Falls through Ontario as a city-to-city ride, and below is the route, the three crossings into Windsor, the paperwork and how to choose a vehicle.

What is the fastest way from Detroit to Niagara Falls by land?

Cross into Windsor and follow Highway 401, Highway 403 and the QEW. Detroit to Niagara Falls, Ontario is about 390 km (242 mi) this way, usually 3 h 45 – 4 h 45 plus the border, against about 628 km (390 mi) via I-90. NiagaraFallsLimo.net drives it door to door; the booker shows the fixed fare.

The Canadian route has one more advantage for travellers heading to the Ontario side: you cross the border once, at the start, and arrive already in Canada.

Two routes compared

RouteDistance (approx.)Typical driving timeBorder crossings to Niagara Falls, ON
Windsor, Hwy 401, Hwy 403, QEW382–390 km (237–242 mi)3 h 45 – 4 h 45One, at Detroit–Windsor
Toledo, I-90 via Cleveland and Erie, Peace Bridgeabout 628 km (390 mi)6 h 30 – 8 hOne, at Buffalo–Fort Erie

Distances are OpenStreetMap routing from Campus Martius in downtown Detroit to the Fallsview district. The Ontario route wins by roughly 240 km and two to three hours, which is why it is the standard choice unless someone in the group cannot enter Canada.

Three ways across the Detroit River

Detroit is unusual in having three road crossings into Windsor. The chauffeur picks one based on where you start and how traffic looks.

The Gordie Howe International Bridge

The newest crossing opened to traffic on July 27, 2026, after delays. It links I-75 in Detroit's Delray area with Highway 401 on the Canadian side by way of the Rt. Hon. Herb Gray Parkway, so cars go freeway to freeway without Windsor city streets. For most trips to Niagara it is now the most direct line onto the 401. The Gordie Howe International Bridge site has toll and traffic information.

The Ambassador Bridge

The long-established suspension bridge between southwest Detroit and Windsor is open 24 hours a day, every day, according to the Ambassador Bridge's official site. On the Canadian side, traffic uses Windsor roads to reach the 401, which adds a few minutes compared with the new bridge.

The Detroit–Windsor Tunnel

The tunnel runs from downtown Detroit to downtown Windsor and also operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, per the tunnel operator. It is handy for pickups in downtown Detroit, though the exit into Windsor's downtown streets means a longer run to the highway. Note that it occasionally closes for events, such as the Detroit marathon.

Timing the start

The Detroit–Windsor crossings carry commuters and a large share of the trucks moving between the two countries, so the hour you leave matters. CBSA's advice for busy travel periods is that early mornings are usually the best time to avoid waits, and holiday long weekends are the busiest. For a Niagara weekend, a departure from Detroit around 9 a.m. on a Friday or Saturday tends to work well: the morning rush has eased and you reach the Falls by early afternoon. A Friday after-work start is possible but means Hamilton and the QEW in evening traffic. The chauffeur checks live crossing data before choosing a bridge or the tunnel, and adjusts if one is clearly slower.

Pickups across Metro Detroit are simple to arrange. Add each address as a stop if the group is coming from Dearborn, Royal Oak or Grosse Pointe, and allow about 15 minutes for each.

The drive across southern Ontario

Once in Windsor, the route is long but simple:

  1. Highway 401 east past Tilbury and Chatham to London, about two hours from the border in normal traffic. London is the natural halfway stop.
  2. Highway 403 east from Woodstock, through Brantford toward Hamilton.
  3. The Lincoln M. Alexander and Red Hill Valley parkways across the top of the Niagara Escarpment in Hamilton.
  4. The QEW east along Lake Ontario past Grimsby, the Twenty Valley and St. Catharines into Niagara Falls.

Road signs in Ontario are in kilometres and km/h, and fuel is sold by the litre. Highway 401 has service centres for breaks. If you would like to break the trip with a meal or a night, our London, Ontario to Niagara Falls route page and Hamilton to Niagara Falls route page describe the later stretches, and the sibling post London, Ontario to Niagara Falls covers that city as a stop.

Wine country on the way in

The QEW passes the Twenty Valley and the Beamsville Bench, Niagara's western wine area, about 40 minutes before the Falls. Groups often stop for a tasting before checking in. There is no drinking in our vehicles; Ontario's liquor law and Niagara Region's by-law do not allow it. Sealed bottles go in the trunk. Our Twenty Valley and Beamsville Bench page lists the wineries.

Documents at the Windsor crossing

Everyone in the vehicle is inspected together on entering Canada, so the whole group needs its paperwork in hand before the car reaches the plaza.

  • US citizens: the Canada Border Services Agency recommends a valid passport, and accepts other proof of identity and citizenship such as an enhanced driver's licence or a birth certificate. See CBSA's travel documents page.
  • US permanent residents: show the permanent resident card.
  • Visitors from other countries: a passport plus any Canadian visa required. Most eTA-country travellers do not need an eTA arriving by car, but visa-required nationals do need a visitor visa. Our international visitors page explains more.
  • Minors without both parents: carry a consent letter.
  • Cannabis: never across the border, in either direction, even if bought legally in Michigan.

Anyone who may be inadmissible to Canada, for example because of a past impaired-driving conviction, should check with CBSA before the trip; in that case the US-only route via I-90 may be the only option. Our documents for entering Canada page covers the details.

Going home

The group re-enters the United States on the way back, either at Windsor or, if you want to return around the lake, at Buffalo. US Customs and Border Protection inspects everyone again, and Visa Waiver travellers need an approved ESTA for land entry. Duty-free allowances and declarations are explained on our duty-free and declarations page.

Choosing a vehicle for a four-hour group ride

Four hours is long enough that comfort matters. Pick by bags as well as seats:

  • Standard or Executive SUV: up to 6 passengers and 6 bags. Best for six friends with weekend luggage.
  • Executive Sprinter: up to 12 passengers, carry-on bags only. Best for a larger group travelling light, with room to move.
  • Stretch SUV Limousine: up to 16 with minimal luggage, availability confirmed at booking. Better for evenings than for a four-hour highway run.
  • Coaches: available on request for larger parties.

A group of ten with full suitcases usually books two SUVs travelling together. Our group transportation service handles multi-vehicle trips.

The honest verdict. A couple or a family of four with a car of their own will usually just drive the 401, and that is a sensible choice. Rideshares and taxis are not practical for this trip. For six or more people, a group where nobody wants to be the driver, or a trip to a wedding or event on a schedule, one chauffeured vehicle on the Ontario route is the most comfortable way to do it, and the border is handled once, with everyone together. Our chauffeur vs taxi vs rideshare guide gives the general comparison.

Who this suits

Groups of friends, colleagues or wedding guests are the main audience, and our page for groups explains how we coordinate pickups and stops. Families benefit from fitted seats and a planned break at London. Couples may prefer to drive, or book a sedan for a special trip. Individuals will usually find a train or bus more economical. Frequently asked questions

Is it faster to drive from Detroit to Niagara Falls through Canada?

Yes. Through Windsor and Highway 401 it is about 390 km (242 mi), usually 3 h 45 – 4 h 45 plus the border. Going around Lake Erie on I-90 is about 628 km (390 mi) and takes roughly two to three hours longer.

Is the Gordie Howe International Bridge open?

Yes. It opened to traffic on July 27, 2026, linking I-75 in Detroit with Highway 401 via the Rt. Hon. Herb Gray Parkway. For trips to Niagara it is now the most direct way onto the 401.

Which crossing is best from downtown Detroit?

For a downtown pickup the Detroit–Windsor Tunnel is closest, but the Gordie Howe bridge leads straight onto Highway 401. The chauffeur checks traffic and wait times before choosing between the tunnel, the Ambassador Bridge and the Gordie Howe bridge.

Do I need a passport to drive from Detroit to Niagara Falls through Canada?

CBSA recommends a valid passport for US citizens, though an enhanced driver's licence or other proof of citizenship is accepted. Every passenger needs their own accepted document, and visitors from other countries need a passport and any required Canadian visa.

Where can we stop on the way?

London, Ontario is roughly halfway and has plenty of places to eat. Highway 401 has service centres, and the Twenty Valley wineries sit just off the QEW about 40 minutes before Niagara Falls. Add stops in the booker so they are part of the plan.

What if someone in our group cannot enter Canada?

Then the I-90 route through Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York to Niagara Falls, New York is the alternative, about 628 km. Check with CBSA before travelling if anyone has a past conviction, including impaired driving, that could affect admissibility.
