Most visitors pick Clifton Hill hotels for the walk. From the "Street of Fun" the Niagara River is one block away, the Rainbow Bridge is at the bottom of the slope and the Horseshoe Falls are a stroll along the railing. That walkability changes how you should plan transport: you do not need a car every day, but the days you do need one tend to be long ones. NiagaraFallsLimo.net plans stays like this every week, and the simplest way to explain it is day by day.
Do you need a car if you stay on Clifton Hill?
Not for the Falls themselves. Clifton Hill hotels are about 121 km (75 mi) from Toronto Pearson, usually 1 h 30 – 1 h 50 off-peak, and about 42 km (26 mi) from Buffalo Airport plus the border. NiagaraFallsLimo.net books the airport legs and wine or US-side day tours online, each with a fixed fare shown before payment.
In between, you walk. The days without a car cost the least and are often the best part of the trip.
The hotels around the Hill, and where cars meet you
"Clifton Hill hotels" covers a cluster rather than a single street. The main ones guests ask us about:
- Falls Avenue Resort, which describes itself as a 20-acre resort with connected hotels, a 3-acre indoor waterpark and indoor access to Casino Niagara and Clifton Hill (Falls Avenue Resort). Its hotels include the Sheraton Fallsview Hotel at 5875 Falls Avenue, The Brock Niagara Falls-Fallsview, Tapestry Collection by Hilton at 5685 Falls Avenue (the former Crowne Plaza) and the Skyline Hotel & Waterpark.
- Clifton Victoria Inn at the Falls, at 5591 Victoria Avenue near the top of the Hill.
- A run of smaller hotels on and around Victoria Avenue and the side streets.
For pickups, give us the hotel name and, at the larger properties, which entrance you will use. Falls Avenue is busy with buses and casino traffic in the evening; the chauffeur confirms the exact meeting point by message before arrival. Our pages on the Sheraton Fallsview and The Brock carry more arrival notes for each hotel.
Day 0: arriving from the airport
From Toronto Pearson (YYZ). About 121 km (75 mi), usually 1 h 30 – 1 h 50 off-peak via Highway 427 and the QEW; on a summer Friday the QEW can stretch that past 2 h. Your chauffeur meets you at the Door A pickup area, or choose meet and greet and the chauffeur waits inside arrivals with a name board. Our journal post on Pearson to Clifton Hill hotels for families walks through the terminal side.
From Buffalo Niagara (BUF). About 42 km (26 mi), roughly 45 minutes of driving, plus the border inspection, usually at the Rainbow Bridge, which lands you at the foot of Clifton Hill. Every passenger needs valid documents; see our Buffalo airport page.
From Hamilton (YHM). About 82 km (51 mi), usually 1 h 05 – 1 h 20.
From Niagara Falls International (IAG), New York. About 13 km (8 mi) plus the border; the airport itself warns that rideshare services may not cross. Our post on the best airport to fly into for Niagara Falls, Canada compares all four.
Arrive mid-afternoon and you can check in, walk down to the river and see the Falls illuminated the same evening without another ride.
Book your arrival at Clifton Hill
Day 1: the walking day
No car. From the Hill you can reach the Niagara SkyWheel, the Falls railing, Queen Victoria Park and Table Rock Centre on foot. The Falls Incline Railway links the Fallsview hotel area with Table Rock if anyone wants to ride up the escarpment rather than climb it. Clifton Hill sells a Fun Pass for its attractions.
If you are travelling with older relatives, a short evening drop from the Hill to Table Rock (about 3 km) saves a long walk back up the slope after dark. That is the one ride most people underestimate.
Day 2: wine country
Old Town Niagara-on-the-Lake is about 23 km from Clifton Hill, usually around 30 minutes along the Niagara Parkway or the QEW; Trius Winery on Niagara Stone Road is about 20 km, roughly 25 minutes. That is short enough that people consider driving themselves, and long enough that the drive home after four tastings is a real concern.
A chauffeured day looks like this: pickup at your hotel around 10:30, three or four wineries with a lunch booked at one of them, an hour on Queen Street, back on the Hill by late afternoon. Nobody drinks in the vehicle, and the chauffeur never drinks; the whole point is that nobody drives after tasting. Bought a case? It travels in the back, sealed. Our wine tour limo page covers how a day is built, and the post on a half-day wine tour in NOTL suits shorter stays.
Day 3: the US side
From the bottom of Clifton Hill, the Rainbow Bridge is a few hundred metres away, and Old Falls Street in Niagara Falls, New York, is about 2.2 km by road. The Niagara Falls Bridge Commission lists cars and limos as permitted on the Rainbow Bridge, with 16 car inspection lanes into the US.
A US-side day usually means Maid of the Mist from Prospect Point, Cave of the Winds on Goat Island, and lunch near the State Park. Each passenger needs valid documents to enter the US; Maid of the Mist's own border-crossing page lists a passport, enhanced driver's licence or trusted-traveller card. The chauffeur crosses with you and waits through both inspections. Our Rainbow Bridge page covers the approach, and the post on combining both boats in one day has a timed plan.
Walking across the Rainbow Bridge is also possible, and on a sunny day with light bags it is a good experience. A car helps when the day includes Goat Island, Three Sisters Islands and a return in the evening.
An optional day: the gorge and the Parkway north
A fourth full day is often best spent going downriver. The Niagara Parkway runs north from Clifton Hill along the gorge, and the stops are spread out enough that walking between them is not realistic.
- White Water Walk. An elevator drops about 70 m to a boardwalk beside the Class 6 Whirlpool Rapids. Seasonal, April to November.
- Whirlpool Aero Car. The antique cable car has crossed the gorge since 1916; Niagara Parks notes that it passes over the international border four times without leaving Canada, so no passport is needed.
- Niagara Glen. Stairs into the gorge and about 4 km of rugged trails; hiking is allowed from sunrise to sunset only.
- Floral Clock and Queenston Heights. The 40-ft clock face holds up to 16,000 plants, and Brock's Monument stands above the village of Queenston.
A chauffeur turns this into a relaxed half day: drop at each stop, a short wait, then on to the next, ending in Niagara-on-the-Lake for lunch if you like. The Parkway itself is one of the most scenic short drives in the province, and it is better seen from the back seat than from behind the wheel. Book it as "By the hour" so the car stays with you between stops.
Day 4: departure
Book the ride to the airport when you book the arrival. For a midday flight from Pearson, a 7:30 to 8 a.m. pickup is typical; for Buffalo, leave extra time for the US inspection on the bridge. Our chauffeurs check live border waits before leaving and pick the bridge accordingly when you are flying from BUF.
Chauffeur vs rideshare vs taxi for this trip
| Trip from Clifton Hill | Chauffeur | Rideshare | Taxi | Train or bus |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| To or from Pearson (about 121 km) | Fixed fare via booker, flight tracked | App pricing, surge possible | Metered or flat rate | GO train plus transfer, or FlixBus from $20.98 (as of 2026) |
| To or from Buffalo Airport (about 42 km plus border) | Fixed fare, crosses with you | Driver may not cross | Some cross, ask first | Limited |
| Wine country day | Car waits all day, "By the hour" | One ride at a time | Metered, one ride at a time | Shuttle tours run set routes |
| US-side day | Crosses and waits | Cross-border not guaranteed | Ask first | Walk the Rainbow Bridge |
| Evening on the Hill | Rarely needed | Fine | Fine | Walk |
The verdict: on Clifton Hill itself you will rarely need anyone, and for a short ride to Table Rock a taxi or rideshare is perfectly reasonable. Solo travellers heading to Toronto with one bag may find the GO train or FlixBus good value. The pre-booked car makes sense for the long legs (the airports), the border, and the wine day, where waiting, luggage and tastings make a one-ride-at-a-time approach awkward. See our chauffeur vs taxi vs rideshare guide.
Booking it with NiagaraFallsLimo.net in 3 steps
- Map the trip. In the online booker, enter each ride: airport to hotel, the wine-day pickup with "By the hour", the US-side day and the departure. Add flight numbers.
- Choose a vehicle per ride. A sedan for the airport, a Sprinter for a group wine day; every class shows its fixed fare.
- Confirm the details. Passengers, bags, child seats, meet and greet. Pay securely and each ride is confirmed by email.
Who this suits
Couples on a long weekend often book just the two airport rides and one wine day. Families add a short evening ride for tired legs and a US-side day with child seats. Groups celebrating something use a Sprinter for the wine day and a Stretch Limousine for one night out. Individuals may only need the airport leg, or nothing at all if they arrive by train. More group ideas are on our groups page, and our Clifton Hill attraction page covers the Hill itself.
Frequently asked questions
Do we need passports for the Whirlpool Aero Car?
No. Niagara Parks says the Aero Car crosses the international border four times over the Whirlpool but never leaves Canada, so no passport is needed for the ride itself. You only need documents if your day includes a crossing to the US side.
What hotels are on Clifton Hill?
The best-known are the Falls Avenue Resort hotels: the Sheraton Fallsview Hotel, The Brock Niagara Falls-Fallsview (formerly the Crowne Plaza) and the Skyline Hotel & Waterpark, plus the Clifton Victoria Inn at the Falls on Victoria Avenue and several smaller hotels nearby. All are within walking distance of the river.
How far is Clifton Hill from the Horseshoe Falls?
About 3 km by road from Falls Avenue to Table Rock Centre, roughly 6 minutes by car. On foot, the riverside walk along Niagara Parkway is pleasant and mostly flat, though the return uphill to some hotels is steeper than people expect at the end of the day.
Is it better to fly into Toronto or Buffalo for Clifton Hill?
Buffalo is closer, about 42 km plus the border, while Pearson is about 121 km with no border. US travellers often prefer BUF; international visitors often land at Pearson anyway. Both work well with a pre-booked transfer and flight tracking.
Can you walk from Clifton Hill to the American side?
Yes. The Rainbow Bridge has a pedestrian walkway at the bottom of Clifton Hill. The pedestrian toll for walking into the US, US$1.00 or CA$1.25 as of 2026, is collected on the Canadian side, and US inspection follows on the far end. Carry a valid passport or other accepted document.
How early should we leave Clifton Hill for a Pearson flight?
Work backwards: airlines generally ask you to be at the airport about 2 h before a domestic flight and 3 h before an international one. Add the drive, usually 1 h 30 – 1 h 50 off-peak, plus a margin for QEW traffic around Hamilton and Burlington, which can build without warning.
Can we book every ride for the stay at once?
Yes. Enter each ride in the booker, from the airport arrival to the departure, with its own date, time and vehicle. Each shows a fixed fare before you pay, and each is confirmed by email. Booking the departure on day one means it is settled before the trip begins.
