A Niagara Falls to Niagara-on-the-Lake taxi is the obvious answer when a couple staying in a Fallsview hotel books dinner on Queen Street or seats at the Shaw Festival. The drive is short, the cab is metered and the town is small. What catches people out is not the outbound trip but the return, when a performance has just ended and everyone wants a ride at once. This guide sets out what the taxi meter means on this route, the honest alternatives, and why many couples hand the evening to NiagaraFallsLimo.net instead.

How much is a taxi from Niagara Falls to Niagara-on-the-Lake?

Taxis on this route are metered. From Fallsview to Old Town Niagara-on-the-Lake is about 23 km (15 mi), usually around 30 minutes, and Niagara Region's posted maximum tariff puts the distance charge at roughly $77–79 as of 2026, before waiting time. For a fixed return fare, book NiagaraFallsLimo.net in the online booker.

That estimate is simple arithmetic on the Region's published maximum rates, which are listed on its business licensing page: $3.80 when the meter starts, 32 cents per 100 metres travelled and $31 for each hour of waiting, as of 2026. Brokers may charge less than the maximum, and slow traffic adds time charges whenever the meter is recording waiting. If you order a cab for a set time, the by-law lets the driver begin charging waiting time from that moment. Two trips, out and back, double the figure.

The route between the two towns

There are two sensible ways to drive between the Falls and Old Town.

The inland route. Via Portage Road and Niagara Stone Road, the wine-country road lined with tasting rooms, it is about 23 km (15 mi) from Fallsview, roughly 30 minutes off-peak. This is the way most cabs go after dark.

The Niagara Parkway. Along the river past the Floral Clock and Queenston, it is a similar distance, about 23 km, and usually a few minutes longer. In daylight it is one of the finest drives in Ontario. You pass the Whirlpool Aero Car, the Niagara Glen and Queenston Heights before the road runs between orchards and vineyards into town.

From the rail station on Bridge Street it is a little shorter, about 21 km (13 mi), around 26 minutes. Our Niagara Falls to Niagara-on-the-Lake route page covers both routes, drop-off points and timing in more detail.

The Niagara Falls to Niagara-on-the-Lake taxi home: the leg to plan

Old Town Niagara-on-the-Lake is a quiet place at night. That is part of its charm, and it is also why the ride home needs thought.

  • Everyone leaves together. When a Shaw Festival performance ends, hundreds of people walk out onto Queen's Parade at the same time.
  • Restaurants close in waves. The last seatings at the dining rooms along Queen Street and in the inns tend to finish within the same hour.
  • Rideshare can be thin. App drivers come and go, and a car that is ten minutes away in Niagara Falls is not much help at 11 p.m. in Old Town. The journal post on Lyft and Uber in Niagara-on-the-Lake explains why.

The practical answer is to arrange the return before you leave the hotel. Either agree a pickup time with a taxi company and accept the meter, or book a car that is confirmed for the moment you will be ready.

Book a return to Niagara-on-the-Lake

Alternative 1: the WEGO buses and the Niagara-on-the-Lake shuttle

For a daytime visit, Niagara Parks' WEGO system is an inexpensive option. A 24-hour adult WEGO pass is $16 and a 48-hour pass $20, tax included, as of 2026, according to the WEGO information page. The Niagara-on-the-Lake shuttle is now included with WEGO tickets, with a transfer at the Floral Clock.

The 2026 WEGO spring and summer schedule shows the shuttle, route 604, running daily from April 4 to October 3, 2026, between Niagara-on-the-Lake and the village of Queenston, at roughly half-hourly intervals for much of the peak-season day. Outside that season, or for an evening that ends after the last bus, it is not an option. For a summer afternoon of strolling Queen Street with no luggage, it is a genuinely good one.

Alternative 2: rideshare

Ride-hail apps are licensed in Niagara, and Uber and Lyft are on the Region's list of licensed companies. Out to Niagara-on-the-Lake in the early evening, an app usually works. The fare follows the app's fee structure, with surge pricing at busy times, and the return is less certain for the reasons above. If you use an app, check how many cars are nearby before your dinner ends, not after.

Alternative 3: driving yourself

Driving is straightforward, but most people visiting Niagara-on-the-Lake in the evening are there for dinner, the theatre or wine, and Ontario's drink-driving laws do not bend for a short trip. If anyone in your party will be tasting, someone else should drive. That is the core reason winery and dinner evenings are booked with drivers.

Alternative 4: a pre-booked chauffeur

A pre-booked car takes the guesswork out of both legs. You can book it two ways:

  • Two transfers. Out at 6:15 for a 7 p.m. dinner, back at a set time from the restaurant door. The fixed fare for each leg is shown in the booker.
  • By the hour. For a wine-country afternoon followed by dinner, a Niagara wine tour limo keeps the chauffeur with you, so the end of the evening is simply when you are ready.

Bottles you buy ride home sealed and stowed in the trunk, because nobody drinks in our cars: the Region's vehicle-for-hire rules bar drivers from allowing it, and Ontario's liquor law makes no exception for limousines.

Where to be picked up in Old Town

Queen Street is narrow and busy in season, and cars cannot always stop exactly at a restaurant door. Agree a clear meeting point when you book: the front of your restaurant if the street allows, a side street, or the entrance of your inn. For theatre evenings, the area around the Shaw Festival at 10 Queen's Parade is the natural point. If you are staying over, our guide to Niagara-on-the-Lake inns notes the entrances at each, and the Niagara-on-the-Lake restaurants guide helps with dinner choices.

Heading for the wineries rather than Old Town

Many visitors are not going to the town centre at all but to the tasting rooms. Niagara Stone Road, the main inland route, passes a long line of Niagara-on-the-Lake wineries, and others sit closer to the Niagara Parkway. A taxi can drop you at one estate easily enough. The difficulty is moving between three or four of them over an afternoon, because each hop means calling another cab from a rural driveway and waiting for it. That is the situation an hourly booking is designed for. The journal post on getting around Niagara-on-the-Lake covers the wider picture.

The honest verdict. For a daytime trip out to Old Town in summer, the WEGO and shuttle combination or a taxi is perfectly sensible. For an evening with dinner or the Shaw Festival, where the return is late and everyone leaves at once, a pre-booked car is the dependable choice, and a fixed fare means no meter running while you wait for the last of your party.

Who it suits

Couples on a dinner or theatre evening are the classic booking on this route, often in an E-Class or S-Class with a return timed to the final curtain. Individuals travelling light in summer may be happy with WEGO by day and a taxi by night. Families with car seats should pre-book: Ontario exempts taxis carrying paying passengers from its child-seat requirements, so a cab may have none. Groups of six to twelve heading to a winery or a celebration dinner fit in one SUV or Sprinter rather than splitting across several cabs. The journal post comparing a wine shuttle with a private wine tour helps if the day includes tastings.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Niagara-on-the-Lake from Niagara Falls?

From the Fallsview hotel area to Old Town Niagara-on-the-Lake is about 23 km (15 mi), usually around 30 minutes off-peak by the inland route. The Niagara Parkway along the river is a similar distance and a few minutes longer. From the GO and VIA station on Bridge Street it is about 21 km, roughly 26 minutes.

How much does a taxi cost from Niagara Falls to Niagara-on-the-Lake?

Taxis are metered. Using Niagara Region's posted maximum tariff as of 2026, a $3.80 drop and $0.32 per 100 metres, the distance charge for about 23 km works out to roughly $77 to $79 one way, before any waiting time. Brokers may charge less than the maximum, and slow traffic adds time charges.

Is there a bus from Niagara Falls to Niagara-on-the-Lake?

In season, yes, with a transfer. WEGO tickets include the Niagara-on-the-Lake shuttle, route 604, which in 2026 ran daily from April 4 to October 3 between Niagara-on-the-Lake and Queenston, with transfers at the Floral Clock. Check Niagara Parks for the next season's dates and the last bus before relying on it for an evening.

Can I get an Uber back from Niagara-on-the-Lake at night?

Sometimes, but it is not guaranteed. Rideshare is licensed in Niagara, yet the number of drivers near Old Town late in the evening varies, and theatre and restaurant crowds leave at the same time. If your return time matters, arrange it before you go, either with a taxi company or by pre-booking a car.

Where does a car pick up in Old Town Niagara-on-the-Lake?

Queen Street is narrow and busy in season, so agree a clear meeting point when you book: the restaurant entrance if the street allows, a nearby side street, or your inn's entrance. For the Shaw Festival, the area around 10 Queen's Parade is the usual point. The chauffeur waits where stopping is allowed.

Can we stop at a winery on the way?

Yes. Add the winery as a stop in the booker's multi-stop mode, or book By the hour for a longer wine afternoon. Bottles bought there travel sealed in the trunk, because there is no drinking in our vehicles. A wine-tour booking lets everyone taste while the chauffeur handles the driving.

Is a taxi or a chauffeur better for a Shaw Festival evening?

For the outbound trip, either works. The return is the difference: when a performance ends, many people want a ride at once, and a metered cab or an app may not be immediately free. A pre-booked chauffeur with a pickup timed to the final curtain, and a fixed fare shown before you pay, removes that uncertainty.
