Every Ottawa family planning a Niagara trip eventually has the same conversation at the kitchen table. Drive the whole way and lose a day? Take the train and change in Toronto? Fly, and then work out how to get from the airport to the Falls? Each answer is right for somebody. This guide sets out the three options honestly, with door-to-door times, so you can choose the one that suits your children, your luggage and your patience.
NiagaraFallsLimo.net fits into two of the three: a chauffeur from your Ottawa front door to your Niagara Falls hotel, or a chauffeur waiting at Toronto Pearson or Billy Bishop after a short flight. Both are fixed-fare bookings made in the online booker, with the price shown before you pay.
What is the best way to get from Ottawa to Niagara Falls with a family?
It depends on your group. Ottawa to Niagara Falls is about 578 km (359 mi), 6 h – 6 h 45 of driving before breaks. Flying to Toronto and taking a 125 km chauffeured transfer is often quickest door to door; a NiagaraFallsLimo.net chauffeur from home avoids every change. The online booker shows each fixed fare before you pay.
The train sits in between: comfortable, no airport security, but with a change in Toronto and a station at the Niagara end that is about 4 km from the Falls.
Three ways to make the trip
| Option | Typical door-to-door time | Changes | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chauffeur from your Ottawa address | about 7 h – 7 h 45 including breaks | None | Families with car seats, lots of luggage, grandparents |
| Flight to Toronto, then a chauffeur to the Falls | often 5–6 h including airport time | One (plane to car) | Families who want speed and do not mind airports |
| VIA Rail to Toronto, then train or car to the Falls | usually 7 h+ including the connection | One or two | Adults and older children who enjoy trains |
These are planning estimates, not promises. Flight times, train connections and Toronto traffic all move the numbers, and the first and last legs (getting to the airport or station in Ottawa, and from the station in Niagara Falls) are where most of the variation hides.
Option 1: the train, with a change in Toronto
VIA Rail's Ottawa to Toronto route averages about 4 h 39 min over 444 km, with dozens of departures a week. VIA has announced timetable changes on the corridor from 25 October 2026, with some departures trimmed, so check the current schedule for your travel day.
At Toronto Union Station you change for Niagara Falls. VIA's Toronto to Niagara Falls leg averages about 2 hours, with only seven departures a week; GO Transit also runs trains to Niagara Falls year-round. The Niagara Falls station on Bridge Street is about 4 km from the Falls, so you still need a ride to your hotel.
What families like: room to move, tables for colouring books, no seatbelt negotiations. What families find hard: a connection at Union with luggage and a stroller, and timetables that may not line up neatly. If you go this way, our train station transfers can meet your train at the Niagara Falls station, and our getting to Niagara by train and bus guide explains every rail and coach option.
Option 2: fly to Toronto, then a chauffeur for the last stretch
A short flight from Ottawa to Toronto puts you within about 122–127 km of the Falls, and that final leg is where a pre-booked car does its best work.
- Toronto Pearson (YYZ). Pearson to the Falls is about 122 km (75 mi), usually 1 h 20 – 1 h 40 off-peak, longer on a summer Friday. Toronto Pearson lists pre-arranged pickup points at Terminal 1 Door A and Terminal 3 Door A. With meet and greet, the chauffeur waits inside arrivals with a name board instead. See our Toronto Pearson transfers page.
- Billy Bishop Toronto City (YTZ). If your airline flies into the island airport, the Falls are about 127 km away, roughly 1 h 30 – 1 h 50. The airport's pick-up and drop-off rules allow brief curbside stops at the mainland pavilion. Our Billy Bishop transfers page covers the details.
We track your flight, so a delay out of Ottawa simply moves the pickup; our post on how flight tracking protects your pickup explains how. Car seats are fitted before the chauffeur reaches the airport, which spares you carrying them through the terminal. Our meet and greet service describes the arrivals-hall meeting.
Option 3: a chauffeur from your front door
The road route runs west from Ottawa on Highway 417, south on Highway 416 to the 401, then along the 401 to Toronto, across the city and down the QEW to the Falls. On a clear day that is about 578 km and 6 h to 6 h 45 at the wheel; with a couple of breaks, plan on 7 h to 7 h 45 door to door.
Six hours sounds daunting, and for a parent who would be driving it often is. For a passenger, it is a different day: the children sleep after the first break, the adults read, and nobody is navigating the 401 through Toronto. The vehicle is the same one at both ends, so the luggage goes in once and comes out once.
When the car wins
Choose the door-to-door chauffeur when two or more of these are true:
- You have children young enough to need car seats, and you would rather not carry them through an airport or a station.
- You are travelling with grandparents or anyone who finds stairs, platforms or long airport walks difficult.
- You have real luggage: a stroller, a travel cot, hockey bags, a week's worth of clothes.
- Your party is five or six, so one Standard SUV or Executive Black SUV (up to 6 passengers, 6 bags) replaces a stack of individual tickets.
- You want to leave and arrive on your own schedule, not a timetable's.
Choose the flight when speed matters most and your group travels light. Choose the train when your children are old enough to enjoy it and you are happy with one change.
Planning a six-hour ride with children
If you go by road, a few habits make the day easy:
- Start early. Leaving Ottawa around 7 or 8 a.m. gets you past the Toronto rush hour by early afternoon on most weekdays.
- Plan two stops. One mid-morning on the 401, one before Toronto. We build them in; tell us the children's ages so the timing makes sense.
- Consider breaking the trip. Some families stop overnight along the way, for example in Kingston, and book two shorter legs. The booker handles each leg separately.
- Pack a car bag. Snacks, water, chargers, a change of clothes, a blanket. Suitcases go in the back and stay there.

Chauffeur vs rideshare vs taxi for this trip
For Ottawa families, the realistic comparison is often about the last leg, from a Toronto airport or station to the Falls.
| Way to go (Toronto to the Falls) | Door-to-door time | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pre-booked chauffeur | 1 h 20 – 1 h 40 from Pearson off-peak | Fixed fare via booker | SUV 6 bags | Families with car seats and luggage, late arrivals |
| Rideshare from Pearson | similar drive, plus wait at the rideshare area | App estimate; surge pricing | Depends on the car | Couples travelling light |
| Taxi from Pearson | similar drive, plus queue | Metered | Sedan or minivan | Travellers who did not pre-book |
| Train or bus from Toronto | 2 h+ plus station transfers | Per-seat fares | What you carry | Budget travellers with time |
| Chauffeur from Ottawa all the way | 7 h – 7 h 45 with breaks | Fixed fare via booker | SUV 6 bags | Families who want no changes at all |
The honest verdict. Rideshare apps can pick up at Pearson, and for a couple with two carry-ons, that is a fair way to reach the Falls. A taxi is fine if you did not plan ahead. Where a pre-booked chauffeur pulls ahead is with children and car seats, with a late or delayed flight, and with a family of five or six who would otherwise need two cars. For the trip all the way from Ottawa, there is no rideshare or taxi equivalent worth considering. Our chauffeur vs taxi vs rideshare guide goes further.

Who this suits
Families are the focus here, and our families page has more on travelling with children. Couples from Ottawa often fly and take the last leg by car, arriving at a Fallsview hotel in time for dinner. Individuals on business sometimes book the full road trip to work in the back seat. Groups of up to 12 travelling light can share an Executive Sprinter for the whole trip. Quebec families heading the same way will find Quebec families visiting Niagara Falls useful, and the routes hub lists every pairing.
Frequently asked questions
How far is Ottawa from Niagara Falls?
About 578 km (359 mi) by road from central Ottawa, usually 6 h to 6 h 45 of driving off-peak via Highways 417, 416, 401 and the QEW. With breaks, plan 7 h to 7 h 45 door to door. Toronto traffic is the main variable.
Is there a direct train from Ottawa to Niagara Falls?
No. You take VIA Rail from Ottawa to Toronto, averaging about 4 h 39 min, then change at Union Station for a VIA or GO train to Niagara Falls, about 2 hours more. The Niagara Falls station is about 4 km from the Falls, so you will need a ride to your hotel.
Is flying from Ottawa to Toronto faster than driving to Niagara Falls?
Usually, door to door, if your group travels light. Once you add airport time and the 122 km transfer from Pearson to the Falls, a typical fly-and-ride day takes around five to six hours. It saves less time for families with lots of luggage and car seats.
Can the chauffeur meet us inside Toronto Pearson arrivals?
Yes. Add meet and greet in the booker and the chauffeur waits inside arrivals with a name board. Without it, the pickup is at Pearson's pre-arranged pickup point, Door A at Terminal 1 or Terminal 3. Flight tracking adjusts the timing if you land early or late.
Will a chauffeur drive us all the way from Ottawa?
Yes. A door-to-door transfer from any Ottawa address to Niagara Falls is a standard long-distance booking. The chauffeur plans breaks, and the booker shows the fixed all-in fare for the whole trip before you pay.
What if our flight from Ottawa is delayed?
Your pickup moves with it. We track the flight, so the chauffeur arrives for the actual landing time rather than the scheduled one. You do not need to call to rebook a delay.
