There are few sounds in Niagara as particular as a carriage horse on Queen Street on a quiet evening. A horse and carriage in Niagara-on-the-Lake is one of those small experiences that visitors remember long after the wineries blur together: a narrated loop of Old Town's tree-lined streets and heritage houses, with the lake never far away. It takes less than an hour, and for many couples it is the centrepiece of an anniversary weekend.

This post explains how the carriages work in Old Town, how to fold a ride into a romantic evening, and how NiagaraFallsLimo.net brings you in from the Falls, Toronto or the airport so nobody spends the night hunting for parking on a heritage street.

How do horse-drawn carriage rides in Niagara-on-the-Lake work?

Horse-drawn carriages in Niagara-on-the-Lake wait at licensed stands near the corner of King and Queen streets in Old Town, close to the Prince of Wales Hotel. Old Town is about 23 km (15 mi) from Fallsview, usually 25 to 35 minutes. NiagaraFallsLimo.net drives couples there for the ride and dinner; book in the online booker.

The town allows a small number of licensed carriage spaces at the corner of King and Queen streets, the heart of Old Town, and that is where you will find the carriages waiting on most days in the visitor season. Business licences come from Niagara Region and the parking spaces from the town; the Region's business licensing pages cover the licence side. Operators advertise narrated tours of Old Town's history, and some take reservations for special occasions.

What this means for you:

  • Walk-up rides are common. On a fine afternoon, go to the stand and ask the driver about the next carriage.
  • Booked rides are the safer choice for a proposal, an anniversary or a wedding, when the timing matters. Contact the carriage operator directly; we arrange your car, not the carriage.
  • Prices and lengths are set by the operator and posted at the stand or on the operator's materials. Ask before you climb aboard.

Carriage use and stand allocations are set by the town and can change from year to year, so if a specific date matters, check close to your visit.

Where Old Town is, and how long it takes to get there

From the Fallsview hotels, the Prince of Wales Hotel at the corner of King and Picton streets is about 23.5 km (15 mi), usually 25 to 35 minutes along the Niagara Parkway or the faster inland roads. The Parkway route is the prettier one, past the Floral Clock, Queenston and the vineyards. Our Niagara Falls to Niagara-on-the-Lake route page compares the two.

From downtown Toronto it is about 127 km (79 mi), usually 1 h 30 to 1 h 50 off-peak on the QEW, and longer on summer Friday afternoons. From Toronto Pearson it is about 120 km (75 mi), with a similar time. The Toronto to Niagara-on-the-Lake route page and our Toronto Pearson transfer page cover both.

An anniversary evening, step by step

The carriage is best as one part of an evening rather than the whole of it. A plan we see couples enjoy:

  1. 4:30 p.m. Pickup at your Fallsview hotel in a Mercedes-Benz S-Class, a Rolls-Royce or a Mercedes-Maybach (availability confirmed at booking for the last two).
  2. 5:00 The Niagara Parkway north, with a short stop at the Floral Clock for a photo.
  3. 5:30 Drop at King and Queen. A carriage ride through Old Town as the light softens.
  4. 6:30 A walk along Queen Street, then dinner. Our Niagara-on-the-Lake restaurants guide lists options.
  5. 8:30 Or a play: the Shaw Festival runs from April 2 to December 23 in 2026.
  6. 10:30 Pickup at the restaurant or theatre door, back to Fallsview.

If you are staying in Old Town instead, the car simply brings you in the morning and the carriage is a stroll away. Our guide to Niagara-on-the-Lake inns lists hotels within a few blocks, and the Prince of Wales Hotel page covers the hotel on the carriage corner itself.

Reserve an anniversary car

A word about the celebration

A carriage ride and a luxury car are both, quite properly, places for a quiet celebration, but neither is a place to drink. There is no drinking in our vehicles under Niagara Region's vehicle-for-hire by-law, and a champagne toast belongs at the restaurant table. If you would like a bottle as a gift, add a sealed bottle in the booker; it stays sealed until you are back at your hotel.

Daytime or evening: choosing your hour

A carriage ride feels different depending on when you take it, so pick the hour to suit the trip:

  • Late morning is quieter on Queen Street and suits families, older travellers and photographers who want the houses in clear light.
  • Mid-afternoon is the busiest time in summer, when walk-up visitors arrive from the Falls and the wineries; expect to wait for a carriage.
  • Early evening is the romantic slot, with softer light and fewer day-trippers, and it leads naturally into dinner or a play.

Whatever the hour, bring a layer. Old Town sits where the Niagara River meets Lake Ontario, and evenings by the water can be cooler than the inland vineyards. A light blanket or wrap in the car costs nothing to pack and makes the last ride of an October evening far more comfortable.

Proposals: how to keep the secret

Couples planning a proposal on a carriage ride ask us the same things, and the answers are mostly about timing:

  • Book the carriage first, directly with the operator, and confirm the start time.
  • Book the car around it. Set the drop-off for fifteen minutes before the carriage, so you are not rushing.
  • Use the booking notes. Tell us it is a proposal. The chauffeur is discreet and will not say a word.
  • Plan for weather. Ask the operator what happens in rain; keep a covered backup such as a hotel garden or a restaurant table.
  • Have the car wait. An hourly booking lets the car stay close, so after the ring you can go straight to dinner or back to the hotel.

Our anniversary and proposal limo page has more ideas, and for weddings using a carriage for the couple's arrival, see the wedding limo page.

Seasons in Old Town

Carriages are a fair-weather pleasure, and the visitor season from spring through autumn is when you will find them most reliably. A few seasonal notes that shape an Old Town visit:

  • Theatre season. The Shaw Festival's 2026 season ran from April 2 to December 23, with summer plays closed by October 11 and holiday shows from early November at the Court House Theatre and the Festival Theatre. A matinee followed by a carriage ride and dinner is a classic Old Town day; see our Shaw Festival page.
  • Icewine in January. The Niagara Icewine Festival's Icewine Village takes over Queen Street over two January weekends, with fire pits and ice carving. Dates for 2027 had not been published when we checked.
  • Fort George. The Parks Canada fort at the edge of Old Town makes a good morning before an afternoon carriage ride; see our Fort George page and Parks Canada's site.

The honest verdict: if you are staying at an Old Town inn, you can walk to the carriage stand and you do not need a car at all. A rideshare from the Falls on a quiet weekday afternoon is fine too. A booked car wins on the night that matters: an anniversary, a proposal, a theatre evening, a late return to the Falls when rides are scarce, or a couple who would like to arrive in something more memorable than a hatchback. The WEGO page shows the daytime transit option, and our chauffeur vs taxi vs rideshare guide goes further.

Who it suits

Couples, above all: anniversaries, honeymoons, proposals and simply a slower evening. Families with children enjoy a daytime ride, and a carriage is often the highlight for younger children who have tired of wineries. Small groups of friends can share a carriage and then a dinner reservation, with an SUV bringing everyone back. Older travellers appreciate that the ride does the walking for them. Read how we plan for couples, and see our posts on a weekend in Niagara Falls plus Niagara-on-the-Lake, the Fort George and Old Town heritage tour, and getting home after theatre in NOTL to Toronto after a Shaw matinee.

Frequently asked questions

Where do you get a horse and carriage in Niagara-on-the-Lake?

In Old Town, carriages wait at licensed stands near the corner of King and Queen streets, a short walk from the Prince of Wales Hotel. Walk-up rides are common in the visitor season; for a proposal or anniversary, book directly with the carriage operator.

How far is Niagara-on-the-Lake from Niagara Falls?

Old Town is about 23 km (15 mi) from the Fallsview hotels, usually 25 to 35 minutes by car along the Niagara Parkway or the inland roads. The Parkway is slower but passes the Floral Clock, Queenston and the vineyards.

Can I propose on a carriage ride in Niagara-on-the-Lake?

Many couples do. Book the carriage directly with the operator for a fixed time, then book your car to arrive fifteen minutes before. Tell us in the booking notes; the chauffeur is discreet. Keep a covered backup plan in case of rain.

Can we bring champagne on the carriage or in the limo?

Not in our vehicles: Niagara Region's by-law forbids drinking in licensed limousines, and there is no limousine exception in Ontario's liquor law. Save the toast for dinner. You can add a sealed bottle in our booker as a gift to take home.

Do the carriages run in winter?

Carriages in Old Town are mainly a visitor-season activity from spring through autumn. In winter, check with the operator before you plan around a ride. January's Icewine Village on Queen Street brings its own winter visitors.

What car is best for an anniversary in Niagara-on-the-Lake?

For two, a Mercedes-Benz S-Class, a Mercedes-Maybach or a Rolls-Royce, all up to two passengers. The Maybach and Rolls-Royce have availability confirmed at booking. For two couples, an Executive Black SUV seats up to six.

What does the ride to Old Town cost?

Our booker quotes a fixed all-in fare for the car, based on your pickup, Old Town drop-off and vehicle class, before you pay. The carriage itself is paid to the carriage operator. Pre-booked rides with us never carry surge pricing.
